You interviewed her?! OMG that's big! I always wondered about her. But I don't understand the whole "spiritual experience" that drove her to him.

Thanks!! She talked about the "spiritual experience," but you have to read the book for the rest! Can't give it all away. Thanks so much for reading!!! Miss513

I hope this isnt rude, but can we get one at least piece of info about her time with Prince now rather than waiting for the book?
She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....

Wow! Thanks for the teaser! Very interesting indeed. Good luck with your journey and hopefully you'll get thru it quickly with quality, so we can rent it or buy it to check it out! Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

As much as I love Prince and all information to do with him, and am interested to read your interview with Gayle, I doubt I'll care much for your book if the whole thing has that subtext of religion similar to what's in your blog post.
I don't much care to hear about anyone's fantastical "spiritual experiences" or any religious persons interpretation of anything Prince has ever done in his life.
Let's not forget that Prince dabbled heavily in the occult in the 80's, and these experiments were FAR more interesting than anything he did with religious connotations. If you want to write a truly balanced book, you'll mention that equally (and risk pissing Prince off), but I get the feeling that's not going to be the case. I hope I'm wrong - are you planning to delve into that topic? We've had some incredible topics about that in the past, mostly due to contributions from now-MIA member blackguitaristz. I don't know if you were here in those days.
Still, best of luck with what you're doing. |

I appreciate you writing a book on Prince. Consider your marker before you go any further. IF your putting a religious christian angle, then your market will be them not Prince fans. If it will be Prince fans, then consider not going over board with Cristianity as the majority here do not necessarily feel Prince being Jeohovah improved his career or what they liked about him.

Prince never dabbled in the occult... He did some dubious backward recordings and people hear what they want to hear when reversing some lyrics, which btw have zero to do with occultism... He never ever recording anything pertaining secret knowledge or hidden truths (Occultism) other than his own philosophies...

When did Prince dabble heavily in the occult??? I've been a hardcore Prince fan since the early 80s and have never heard (or seen any evidence of) a shred of evidence of that. And by evidence I mean more than just someone spouting on a message board. [Edited 12/23/10 11:55am] the music knows what your motives are when you are making it

The JW's might as well be the occult. All you others say Hell Yea!!

I love Prince and have defended him since 1984 but for your sake give this up. This man is human-his music may need attention but don't waste yourself on tis type of thing

You mean the book that you haven't written yet, that doesn't have a publisher, that Chapman is your first interview for, that already looks like it's going to be filled with 'spiritual' gobbldy-gook? That book?
When's it coming out?

It is obvious that this person is aware of Prince's religious leanings and since her goal is to meet him next year, its wise she shows a strong ability to be... um, pious.

Sometimes it doesn't hurt to not be so disrespectful.

Hi StonedImmaculate:
Nope, not rude at all. She said that she loved working for Prince, contrary to popular belief. I really do want to talk about the full interview, but it would be best to put it in the context of the rest of the book. I am really dedicated to the project, and I want people to read it in its full form. However, I'll continue to give as many updates as possible as I get more interviews (knock on wood).
Thanks for the response! Miss513

Hi Militant!
Thanks for the response. I really respect what you've said, and thank you for wishing me luck.
I am absolutely trying to be as balanced as possible. I have no intention of writing a piece of Christian propaganda. The book is, however, about Prince's spirituality in his life and career through thorough study of his songs, interviews, performances, biographies, etc., as well as comments from people who knew/know him. Ultimately, I would like to interview him, too.
After I discovered "Purple Rain" in high school, the next album I picked up was "Rainbow Children," and I was interested to see how he progressed from the former work to the latter, which was filled with so many spiritual concepts. That journey intrigues me, and I'm trying to investigate how he got from point A to point B. Hope that makes sense.
Like a couple other people in this forum, I hadn't heard about Prince's dabbling in the occult. I've read A LOT of Prince books and other materials, as I'm sure you have. Yes, if I find evidence of that I will definitely include it in my book. I realize that Prince may not be a fan of my book. I'm not setting out to piss him off or please him, just want to document his journey to the best of my ability. I am new to the org so I wasn't around when that particular member discussed the topic. If you have any info you'd like to share, I'd be willing to check it out.
Thanks again! Miss513 | |

Hey thanks, muskiediver!
Your response helps! I am not trying to write a Christian book, but it is about spirituality. I absolutely want Prince fans to read it - that is part of the reason I wanted to document my journey for you all.
My goal is not to prove that Prince's conversion to the Jehovah's Witness faith made him better or worse as an artist. I'm just interested in writing about the motivation behind his change to the best of my ability.
Thanks again; I appreciate everyone's opinions! Miss513

Interesting...I see what you mean. It's too late, though. I've written quite a bit and I'm invested. It may work; it may not, but I'll see it through. Miss513

I actually have about 80 pages that I started in at my undergraduate university. All of that writing is based on secondary sources (biographies, articles, performances, recorded interviews). Now, my goal is to talk to people one on one, and Chapman is the first.
I don't have a set date, but I plan to have twice as much in a year's time, depending on my interviews and research.
I am definitely not trying to do any type of Christian propaganda, but spirituality is the main theme. I hope that fans of Prince will enjoy the book no matter what they believe.
Thanks for the response!

Hmmm, I see what you mean. I'm not trying to appear "pious" or anything. I'm not trying to cater to Prince or purposely make him mad. Want to interview him about the topic at hand; no more, no less. I'm just a writer trying to complete a project that interests me. I can definitely see how people would think otherwise, though. Thanks for the post! Miss513
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I know that you don't want to give away too much, but I do think that a tiny bit more info about the interview wouldn't be a bad thing.
If you are a good writer and you stick with credible sources then your book could gererate interest. I don't recall Prince being covered in depth from the perspective you're using, so your book would stand out from others in that regard.
There's a lot of naysayers here who think their opinion is holy writ, but don't let them discourage you...best of luck.
ps...in 28 years I've never read or heard a first hand account from anyone of Prince dabbling in the occult. Only speculation and heresay. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

By pious, I just mean religious. Prince tends to like religious people and sometimes will refuse to even interact with devoutly anti-religious people. So, were any chance of meeting him to be within your grasp, it would be wise to come across as spiritually open as opposed to spiritually vacant. That's all I'm sayin'.
