ideas for the ultimate Prince album

Since quite a few people on here moan that Prince has lost his touch or declare that they are no longer inspired by P's music, What would you suggest he do? A 2011 version of SOTT with its huge mix of styles or something live? For me, I'd love a live album in which he used a number of band configurations involving ex-band members (maybe Andre Simone and Dez Dickerson) as well as new, highly-respected recruits playing a everything from psychedelic jazz and metal to JB funk, classical and soul. What do you think?

I'd love for him to try a few regaee and blues songs. Blue Light is one of my personal favourites, and i'd like him to try those two genres again.

I think Prince is making better albums than those he made in the '90s, so I'd say my "ultimate Prince album" is the one he's going to release next. He'll never be on the same level he used to be in the '80s, and I don't think you can expect that from a man who has been recording for 30 years now. He's doing fine at the moment IMO.

You mean you're gonna actually hear what we play tonight? You're not gonna make up the notes in your mind?

i actually agree that its unrealistic to expect him to return to his 80s level but itd be interesting to see him try something new

I'd love to see him work with the Marley family on a traditional reggae song.. that would definitely be awesome.

New high-quality singles like The Most Beautiful Girl in the World or Gett Off

I know that, at this point of his career, he cannot release something as good as Kiss or When Doves Cry ...

I understand them, but I think these kind of requests are pointless.

I'd like another TRC, mixed with tracks like From the lotus, then accoustic tracks and just piano ones and then songs with lots of deep dirty bass mixed with sensual alternative and lots of live percussion for the heart beat. I think I'm looking for a 4 cd box. razz

Maybe not, an Idea for an Ultimate Prince album like the original poster said could be a live album concert or aftershow, People really get into live albums and someone of Prince star status would really introduce his music to a lot of people. Something about hearing live music at times causes people to go back and explore a musicians backlog.

Yeah I agree with that but I don't think anything would be the 'ultimate' prince album nor that anybody is listening. I also think that live shows should be made available on the web for a reasonable price after the shows and not on some compiled and edited live CD box or whatever. IMO that's a much better way to enjoy the live experience.

take the multi-track masters and put them on dvd with a mixing board so we can make our own mixes or just explore each track in more depth.

I hear ya bigbrother, I pray at one time or another while P is still recording that he could hook up with some old Revolution members that would contribute to a new project or even do a show or two. I know that only pleases what I want but, there are a lot of us p.orgers who'd love to see that too ...

We allready have gotten the ultimate prince album, or albums to be honest:

1981 - 1988: Dirty Mind unto Lovesexy (including all the outtakes on bootlegs).

I don't see Prince topping that period ever. Most great artists have a certain 'peek period' in which they, at first, develop their signature style and at second, experiment with it for a while to see what musical possibilities they can achieve with it. The moment they realise how and what they are exactly are 'doing' is often the moment the quality of their music begins to detoriate.

When I look at Prince career, i feel that Dirty Mind unto Purple Rain represent the first phase: him mixing funk, rock, soul, (new wave) pop and electronic music into the Minneapolis sound. Purple Rain obviously being the end-stadium of that phase: incorporating more pop- and rock elements then before and making him a superstar.

Around the world in a day unto Lovesexy is his second phase to me: He did have have his major succes with Purple Rain, it feels like he doesn't have to prove anything anymore, and he can be more 'free' and playfull in his music. Around the World in a day still owes a lot to his first phase (i disagree with many people saying that album was so different from Purple Rain), probably because it was partially recorded before he became a big star. But on Parade and Sign of the Times he is more free musically then ever, and also lyrically: to me he has never topped the lyrics on 'Sign', he mostly appeared less mature afterwards.

Lovesexy sounds like a hyperactive hybrid of everything he has done before, often incorporating several musical styles in a single song (from 1999-like synths, to Frank Zappa-like bridges, from rich vocal arrangements influenced by George Clinton to Sly Stone-funk on Alphabet Street, from the psychedelic guitar work on Glam Slam and Positivity to dance-music elements on the title track and Dance On). Looking back Lovesexy almost sounds like a 'testament', a final showcase of all he could he achieve musically and lyrically.

I don't want to sound like someone who says Prince only was great in the eighties, because in the first half of the nineties he still has delivered some fabulous individual songs. But in the nineties he seemed to me as an artist past his peak: too aware of what makes his music 'work' (resulting in some formulaic 'rocky' Kiss-copy like 319) and at the same time top obsessed with having mainstream succes again (the misguided attempts with hip-hop on Diamonds and Pearls and the Symbol album, and with contemporary R&B since Emancipation).

But at least there was still some urgency and creativity to be found in that period. In the 00s it sounds like he just released some songs he recorded the night before, coupled them with some D-side material from the vault, and released them just for the sake of having a new album to tour with. Its like he just doesnt care what he releases nowadays.

I take Diamonds and Pearls over 3121 anyday, Graffiti Bridge is like 10 times better then 20ten and compared to the Symbol album Lotusflower is a bunch of crap.
