This is not even a real comparison. They don't even belong in the same senence, let alone the same thread.

Dirty Mind and Controversy shit ALL OVER Lotus Flower and MPSLsound!

There's not one song on LF or MPLSound that is worthy of even being mentioned in the same breath as any of the songs from Dirty Mind or Controversy.

Oh look, it's the deluded old people who can't let go of the past.

Lotusflow3r has them both, Mplsound ties with controversy (although Controversy is more creative), but loses out to Dirty Mind's simplified punk-funk!

That's my take.

i want to say DM/C over LF/MPLs by so much is it crazy

but then again I was much younger when I got DM/C and they are a part of who I am. I have hjeard them 100s of not 1000s of times. I can not even begin to say the same for much of anything post Lovesexy and NOTHING post prince.

I do not know enough about music theory to know if one is better. but I know which ones i like more. I know which ones speak to me. I know which ones are infused into what I am. The older music is always with me, it is something that buzzes in me all the time it comes out of my fingers when I bee-bop down the hall at work.

The new stuff, and some of it is cool even great... but it is just not meaningful to me.

So a new albums comes out and I get it. I give it a chance. I listen to it 2 times (at least) a day for a week or two. Then it is back in the pile... and back goes in something from a time gone by. Before the George Lucas ruined star wars... and I can really feel some of that which I felt way back then.

Hell 'Sign O the Times' still makes me feel like I am falling into the music. And I still see the music when 'Starfish and Coffee' plays. (which had nothing to do with tiny bits of paper)

I enjoy MPLsound, and I could rate it close to Contoversy, but DM slays them all.

End score of a football Game between Dm/Cont vs LF/MPLSound?

Final score

Dirty Mind/Controversy 2,958 points

LotusFailur3/MPLastic-sound 8 points

This thread is fucking ridiculous. I'm pretty sure Prince goes on these forums himself and puts up these stupid ass threads to make Orgers think that other Prince fans actually rate his latest crap release anywhere near his classic back catalog.

This is just plain silly

Lotus > Controversy > MPLSound > Dirty Mind.

Ask me another day and I could swap Controversy/MPLSound but Lotus will always be my favourite from that bunch and DM the least.

RIP sad

You are kidding me, two classics next to two stale middle of the road offerings, if anything MPLsOUND AND Lotusflow3r are nothing like DM or Controversy, the older albums are classics wheres hes an innovator writing bluntly sexual and liberal lyrics, the last two hes only following his melody by numbers model he found in 1993 and has never moved on from.

Compared to Dirty Mind and Controversy, the two later albums wouldn't be fit for holding coffee cups

So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

Apples and oranges. wink

You can't compare those albums.

Dirty Mind and Controversy are classic Prince. Great funk on both and beautiful ballads.

Lotusflower/ MPLS are just good albums, but... nothing groundbreaking about these.

yes dirty mind/controversy are better albums than lotusflower/mplsound but the problem people have when listening to albums is that when they get a new prince album....they hope it will make them feel the way a prince album USED to make them feel.....but the problem with this is that they are 45 now......nothing prince releases now will make them feel 18 again when they are 45.....that is one of the main problems with fans trying to objectively listen to a new album and finding that it doesnt make them feel the way they used to...he cant !!!...

.

i love the lotusflower single disc album....it has some great stuff on it....its not without flaws but thats fine....i dont think it is as good as anything from the 80s apart from maybe batman but i can still listen to his music now and appeciate it for what it is......prince now and me now.......not him in the 80s and me as a sixteen year old.....his music is still very good....maybe missing that creativity that gets harder for any artist to keep producing but he is only feckin human and his back catalogue is as good as any in the last 50 years...

.

cheers smile

.

just as a footnote to this.....it would be interesting to hear from young fans about what their favourite prince albums are....i think you will find that recent albums from prince will be among their favs.....i think it has a bit to do with age...not everything...but it plays a part...

Controversy, Dirty Mind, Lotus Flow3r and MPLsound are 4 fantastic albums.

Controversy was the 1st Prince album I discovered when it came out back in '81. I was about 11. My older cousin was in high school at the time and he used to play it along with Dirty Mind a lot. I would listen to it when I was hanging out at his house while he was getting ready to go out with his friends on the weekends. I really didn't get the "adult" content of the albums at the time but I just remember being intrigued and hooked by the sound of the music.

Fast forward to today with Lotus Flow3r and MPLsound and I found myself at the first listening of each album just as excited and pleased with Prince and his music as any other time in his musical past. I love the fact that I can put on any Prince album and hear something different and, to me, something amazing. I love the almost strange and musical tones of Lotus Flow3r. It has a lot of what I would call, magical moments in the music and arrangements. Even the simplistic pop songs on the album like 4Ever and the 2006 out take The Morning After are completely bliss for me. Wall of Berlin, Colonized Mind and Dreamer top as brilliance. The funk and fun in Feel Good, Feel Better, Feel Wonderful and $ are addictive.

MPLsound is killer! I love the opening triple jam set of (There’ll Never B) Another Like Me followed, Chocolate Box and Dance 4 Me. These 3 songs alone give me absolute musical satisfaction and dare I say….”that tingling feeling running up my leg”. It’s a feeling of pop funk and it makes me want to turn up the volume and turn it up loud! U’re Gonna C Me and Here are absolutely gorgeous ballads and Valentina is simply infectious for me. No More Candy 4 U ends this masterful album with whimsical fun for me.

Prince is a master at creating something new and always something different. I adore that he adds all types musical flavors to each album. There are times when we get a little taste from the sound or arrangement in some songs that are flavors of his past work but again, they are still new, fresh and different.

I never get bored with Prince. In fact, I will always cherish what he creates because I can go back to the 1st album from 1978 For You up to 20Ten and hear an entire universe of sound, style and magic. For me, this is what Prince and his creative genius are all about…musical diversity and imagination.

dont get me wrong....i am not saying his 80s music is not better than his recent stuff...it is better...lot better in some cases...but some people here say everything was great up to 88 then everything was crap ??...thats bullshit and what i am saying is if people are saying that it may not be all down to the quality of the music...it may be down to them changing as a person...getting older...

.

i think if he had stayed with warner bros...he would still be having the hits...maybe not as big but i think he has written stuff that would have charted in the last ten years...

I get shit for it occasionally, but I'm not a HUGE fan of his albums prior to 1999. I like all of 'em, but I don't LOVE them front to back. The dated production doesn't always work for me. I think that's why I like it when he does REALLY old songs live. I think Lotusflow3r, in hindsight, will be considered a classic Prince album. But MPLSound, surprisingly, is a Prince album that has really faded for me. Maybe more than any other. I really don't like that album now at all.

Caveat: I'm not sayin' any of these are BAD albums. To each their own.
