Why Hasn't Prince Been Crowned:King of Pop, Rock&Soul?

Who is P's competition now? Rick James is gone, The Godfather, James Brown is gone and M.J has left us. These were 3 great men, musicians and entertainers. Now that they are gone, what will it take to elevate Prince to the new KING OF POP?

Hopefully nothing. If he ever starts doing straight-up pop, that's the day I divorce his ass. hmph!

That title, whether deserved or not, is always and forever MJs. Besides, Prince has never struck me as one consumed -- at least outwardly -- with those honorary titles.

Well, I thought he was "Daddy Pop" or "Pop Daddy" - Sign O' The Times.

Michael will always be the King. I love Michael as well. These two men influenced me during the 80's. Michael respected Prince and so did the God Father, James Brown. I'm sure Michael would find no contemporary artist more fitting of this title.

Are you implying that Daddy Pop was from the SOTT era????

So you think he should be King of Pop because he used "pop" in a song title? confuse

And Daddy Pop is on Diamonds and Pearls. Nice try, though.

Really, if you want a title, all you have to do is start calling yourself something. Michael Jackson started calling himself the King of Pop, so people followed it. Because of that, Howard Stern jokingly started calling himself the King of All Media, and now other people do too. That's pretty much all you have to do.

Many of P's songs are categorized as being Pop. Over the years at various award shows, he was nominated in that category.

No. Pop is a pigeonhole...Prince is too good and too versatile to be boxed in with a flimsy title. As said above, if he was just pop, i wouldn't be as enthusiastic....Prince takes all styles to new levels. You never know what's next.

Liz Taylor started calling Michael the King of Pop, Michael never called himself that. Michael has the title and that's it.

Prince is too funky to be pop. To me, he is King Of Funk.

Nonsense....................

Prince should release a track and call it...."Fuck Pop".

pop is the lowest common denominator music, prince is far above that. to call his music pop is derogatory. it's far from pop, which is why it's not often in the charts with the rest of the music that's shat into creation by people who use computers because they never bothered learning instruments, and listened by brain dead morons being transported by sheep to workplaces with earphones plugged into mobile phones

prince is a musician, not a king. he doesn't need a retarted made up title

Thats not fully true..Michael was the self-proclaimed king of pop. He started it. He told people to announce him as the kig of pop. Theres a story where he told MTV to while premiering one of his vidoes.

Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

Liz Taylor started it at an awards show. MJ definitely ran with it.

As far as Prince, here's what he says

My name is Prince I don't wanna be King

'Cause I seen the top and it's just a dream

Big cars and women and fancy clothes

Will save your face but it wont save your soul

Who is Prince in competion with now?

A question I've been contemplating lately since the guitar hero conversations...

Frankly if he allowed himself to liscense away his talents to guitar hero... inside of two years ( Some fanatic would copy him so perfectly) that he would be in competion with himself... A copy but a good copy.

Kinda like windows or those new phones that keep cropping up,newer, better... the Ipad?

It"ll never end..

Every move.. every trained finger lick... his very style would be emulated to death...

Cuz he's right, EVERY one DOES want to play like him....or at least close enough to get some of that adulation (or his light) for themselves!

Damn Pirates...

Individuality is so 1980's... everyone and everything is just a regurgitated mess nowadays!

You are on something. Prince's music is absolutely pop and the large portion of his catalog is pop music. While he dabbles in other areas, Prince is and always will be primarily a pop/rock artist.

Michael and Prince are jointly my favorite artists of all time, but it's laughable that anyone considers "King Of Pop" to be some sort of actual honorary title or something. It's a NICKNAME, thus it cannot be "transferred" or "inherited" like it's an actual title LOL.

Michael Jackson is the King of Pop

Madonna is the Material Girl

James Brown is the Godfather of Soul

Prince is His Royal Badness / His Purple Majesty

Bruce Springsteen is The Boss

Aretha Franklin is the Queen of Soul

Courtney Love is the Goddess of Grunge

Nobody else gets to be the King of Pop just because Michael isn't with us anymore, just like nobody else gets to be the Godfather of Soul just because James died.
