I'm afraid some out there are probably itching to imply that Prince must be some kind of visionary just because something he's written happens to become relevant or topical by pure coincidence (just like when he did 'The Go-Go's' thing at the end of'98 almost three years before Bin Laden became a household name, causing all and sundry to jump to conclusions later on in 2001) and now the Columbia disaster happens.
Having said that, so little of the social landscape has changed since the mid-eighties (it has in fact deteriorated even further) that even today anybody can listen to a song like 'Sign O'The Times' and find that all the lyrics still apply in the historical context of today, if not more than ever before. Could we call this a "timeless" song then? If that's the case then this is regrettable. Not because of the quality of the song itself, but just because the message 'Sign O' The Times' carries still hits the nail on the head with all the vigour and relevance that it had when the lyrics were written seventeen years ago. .
