I would have loved a 12" club release of Le Grind with a b-side of Superfunky. With remixes of both as well.

well yeah lol underground, but there was no era for the black album: singles concerts/shows videos can't count what was performed on Lovesexy

Instrumental singles never sell (2 nigs)

Madhouse 6 would like to have a word with you. lol

Madhouse was a bit different, Eric Leeds, Sheila E, Levi Seacer and Prince (Wow) compared to 2 Nigs which is alright but not chart fodder. Yes the single charted but not very highly, it was lamost ignored in the hype over Tiffany and Rick Astley in 1987.

Yet some of his best mid-late 80s stuff charted lowly or not at all, the Jill Jones album should have been full of hits, what did Tiiffany have that Jill didn't.

So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

1s single: Le Grind

THIS^ would have been for Prince what Word Up! was for Cameo.

2nd single: When 2 R In Love

Hands down, THE more underrated slow jam ever.

3rd & final single: Cindy C.

Given that Cindy Crawford was THE supermodel of the late 1980's, this track as a potential hit is a no brainer.

I'm too lazy to look it up but wasn't "6" a top 5 or top 10 hit on the R&B Chart (or whatever they were calling it in 1987)? It's doubtful anything on TBA would have done better, instrumental or not. I can't imagine pop radio playing any of it.

she had that hand dance that looked like vogueing lol

But I totally agree, I think again Prince didn't put the effort in helping with the promotion.

1st of all by that album Jill should have been established with a Controversy-1999-or Purple Rain era album and a ATWIAD-Parade era album

which probably means most of her SOTT era album songs would be on either of the 2 I mentioned above.

But she was totally absent from the SOTT era visuals and should have been someone in there

No era for the Black Album? It was played daily in 1988-1989 at my place, copies requested by many non-prince friends (it was the only Prince album they liked), was on both Bono's and The Edge's best of list celebrity poll, and when asked what he was listening to on his walkman as he jogged, Steven Tyler replied "The Black Album". I even remember when MTV did a "cribs" style profile of John Taylor of Duran Duran, and as he flipped through his record collection, he had The Black Album right next to The Beatles "White Album". This was all back in the day. That album had a huge presence. He should have released it back then. Gangsta rap still hadn't taken hold.

Some Black Album tracks were part of the Love Sexy Tour, so you sorta get an idea of how that era could've looked like.

It got an official release in 1994, but then by that time the hype about it had long gone.

i think le grind would have been the 1st single and i could see it being a top 10 hit on pop rnb and dance charts.

cindy c is the obvious 2nd single.after the lp comes out everyone would have heard it and the critics im sure would have paid special attention to the song in their reviews.im sure it would be number 1 on he dance charts

top 20 rnb and top ten pop

the 3rd and final single would have been when 2 r n love.

no impact on pop charts at all.top 20 rnb

cindy c gets played live on the mtv awards

prince pushes for bob george to be a single.warners scoffs at the idea.prince makes a video .video and song for bob george gets mad airplay without being a commercial single(much like adore did, without the video that is) and gets prince and the lp talked about.alot.

it sells between 1 and 2 million.

maybe a nomination at the grammys

live shows become the stuff of legend

this is how i see it oing down

not his best work but one of his most interesting and thats the idea i think

this album sucked. He did right by pulling it. This album was more effective as an underground album. The only song I liked on it was Dead On It. The others are cool unreleased songs but weak as official songs to me. Then again I did not really like this time era for Prince(Sign/Black?Lovesexy). He came back strong with me on the Batman album. Thats just me though as it seems most like this era the best but other than the 2000's this is Prince's weakest to me.

You are right, Six got to 5 on the R and B chart and the album 8 got to 25 and 107 Pop, but still these are not that impressive. I have heard many artists topping the Black chart and completely missing the Pop chart, Six completely missed the pop chart (Yet the group was mostly white and Hispanic). It did as well as expected. To me Madhouse's lack of pop success was the Pop audiences loss as Madhouse I think had some very high quality instrumental music, it was probably a bit too high brow for the standard late 80s teeny bopper.

I still think 2 Nigs is not on the level of the Madhouse material (Especially the last album and the Dopamine Rush Suite).

So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

Just for the heck of it: Bob George c/w Scarlett Pussy would have been a wonderful single-release. But I'm just saying that as I like the tracks so much, totally not contemplating radio-friendliness here.....eeh, that might have been a problem, alas: it would certainly have been a problem with Bob George as an A-side. You would have to edit it endlessly. Although, some hits (generally speaking, not just Prince) with daring lyrics became hits, just because of that. A Bob George-single would have certainly made an impact, one way or another, that's for sure. Also because it's very obscure and not everybody would recognize Prince immediately.

The frat college crowd would have ate up Bob George just like they were eating up 2 Live Crew a year later. I know because I was getting requests of copies of the Black album from these types of guys after they heard Bob George. And man they were disappointed with official releases like Lovesexy or Batman at the same time.

Totally agree, I think most people fans and non fans were/are drawn to that track... that song represents a lot of POP culture ie movies the 1990's rap scene that began to dominate

And to go along with that he could have made a cool spoof video for Dead On It which is funky to me

Dude I know, I was doing the same. But that is not an Album era we got Lovesexy.

It could have been seriously huge and Prince made some money off of it too instead of the bootleggers

I think, even without singles, TBA would have easily doubled the sales of LoveSexy. On top of that, it would have most probably bolstered his credibility as still being a cutting edge artist.

LoveSexy elicited a collective "meh" from the mainstream audience.

That's a fact. Prince would have gained more creative power and freedom if he had released the Black Album becuase of how popular it wold have gotten. I truly believe it would have been much bigger then Lovesexy, and be seen as cool by the mainstream public and critics.

A better idea would be a 2-record set wink Record 1 would be the dark side (Black Album),record 2 would be the enlightened side (Lovesexy).
