maybe a combination of both, but definately Victorian. I don't think Purple Rain era was all that frilly. Also the Lovesexy era the look also borrowed from the look of Pirates and Buccaneers gypsies and hippies

Those pictures don't look even remotely like normal Victorian outfits for men.... neither did Prince.

It wasn't supposed look just like it but the style did come from there.
The first pic with the trench and ruffles seriously reflects the Purple Rain - Lovesexy look
and the 2nd pic the same
look up images of pirates from that age and you'll see Prince especially for Lovesexy. And of course it wasn't every outfit
And I'll say again, Prince is a ROCK STAR not a regular man walking down the street, he's not a metrosexual, (we love to put people in limiting catagories don't we) No one would say that any of the rock stars of the 70's or 80s were metrosexual, we just say it comes with being an entertainer and rock star. So why does Prince have to be equated to a metrosexual.

renaissance/Baroque/Victorian/Medieval Neither of those are Victorian. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

well you go back to the site and tell the people, the VIctorian era wasn't stiffled to a particular country so there were various styles. So since your repeating yourself, what era do they come from... because Prince sure was rocking that lookin that look from Purple Rain - Lovesexy, the 2nd pic even had the buttons on the trousers inthe groin era
Dress in the Baroque and Rococo Period: 1600 – 1700[Edited 12/19/10 8:04am]

This is not Victorian. See there below the photo where it says "Baroque and Rococo Period 1600-1700"???
The Victorian era is a VERY SPECIFIC time period - 1837 - 1901 - and men's styles from that period do not generally include lace, ruffles, etc... they were generally rather conservative compared to earlier periods.
If Prince were wearing a cravat, ascot, a detachable collar rather than ruffles... and maybe a cutaway or sack coat you might have something...

about time, ok his recent years is Victorian with the trench coats and conservative look as well as the Parade era lol

Wrong again.
Good lord - give it up already, would you? It's obvious you know nothing about clothing or its place in history. Stick to writing your little "era" pieces about the music and leave the clothes alone. WHAT???? No. There's no connection.
Is there some reason you feel you MUST connect Prince to the Victorian era?

I did give a specific time period, you mental midget.
All of the Purple Rain-era costumes were based on clothing from the Georgian period.

He has also worn Regency-inspired clothing (Regency is actually part of Georgian - but it's late Georgian - the time when George III had gone mad and his son, the Prince Regent, took over the rule). In fact, most of the high collars Prince wears to this day are Regency collars (note the collar on this jacket)...

So illogically, continually insisting on the wrong answer until someone spoon feeds you a real one. That's not really bait but it does smell like chum.

I like a good argument, we all do. This thread was interesting; but when some people start using insults and bitter/harmful mockery, you know it's time to go someplace else... I guess a +15.000 posts level allows you to insult other orgers

Oh jtfolden, I think it got really blown out of proportion, I was having more fun with it than anything, I didn't make it serious, it came from you and Genesee, dam lighten up.
And since you know that it isn't just give the answer instead of saying it's wrong... I don't see why that was so hard. and again lighten up
Pimps & Hoes, and don't tell me that Vanity 6 and the Dirty Mind-Purple Revolution lace teddy's were not Victorian inspired lol
