SOTT vs PURPLE RAIN - whihc is your fave? ..tis been far too long since we've had a ? vs ? thread!. Anyways, lets go for the best 2 [IMHO] - however you care to measure it which is your fave. I'll base my decision on only being allowed to take 1 of the 2 on holiday. For me it's Purple Rain all the way, although only 9 trax in length [vs the 16 on SOTT] it still manages to squeeze everything that's good about P in one neat package. Hard to explain but there really is that undefineable X-factor about it.
Over to you purple freakx !.

Sign o the Times.
I think that, pound for pound, Purple Rain is a stronger album... but I like Sign more.
Now if we could just get a copy on cd that doesn't sound like a fart in a jar.

Far too long since we had a V's thread?? Yeah, only about a week or so.
Anyway, SOTT vs Purple Rain = 1999.

Sign O The Times. There really isn't any competition. Song by song, SOTT is longer, more genuiune, more artfully creative, and more substance. PR has songs like "Take Me With U". No competition. time flies.

SOTT. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I just spent about 10 minutes agonizing over this like it was Sophie's Choice, then realized it is not that serious.
So I'm going to say Purple Rain, but I imagine my answer would change depending on the day that you ask me.

This is IMPOSSIBLE to really decide. I mean, song for song, Purple Rain is the stronger album. However SOTT is a great album with great songs, and is much longer, so there is moer to love. I don't know...Purple Rain, but only by a pinch. Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

Purple Rain ... it still has an effect on me, to this day ... S.O.T.T. would be my pick if Dream Factory was originally released but, that's the journey, hunh? Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

Purple Rain easily.
SOTT has so much filler... I really don't get the hype over this album. [Edited 12/3/10 11:15am]

SOTT HANDS DOWN | |

I couldn't choose. They are two completely different types of works. It depends on the mood. While I love SOTT with a passion, the songs on PR such as WDC and Purple Rain are iconoclastic classics that are in my opinion better than anything on SOTT

Purple Rain hands down.

Still, I prefer Purple Rain... It's more "cohesive" as a whole, plus it sounds richer (some people called it "overproduced", but I'm just sometimes bothered by the 'minimalistic' sound of SOTT...) Everybody is somebody, but nobody wants to be themselves.

Examples of what you would consider "filler"? [Edited 12/3/10 12:11pm] **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Play in the Sunshine It Slow Love Forever in my life The Cross It's gonna be a beautiful night
These tracks are mostly lukewarm to me. It and Forever in my life totally bore me.

Wow! The only track that I remotely consider as "filler" is "It". I never cared for that song. The rest of the songs on that album are there for a particular reason. Especially "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night". That was from the last Revolution concert... and Susanna was the girlfriend at the time.
Are you a younger fan? **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Nope. I'm 32. Been a fan since 1999.

Interesting. Just goes to show that Prince has fans with all different tastes.
For me, I'm so tired of Purple Rain that I'll take almost ANY album over that one. I don't care if I hear any of the songs from that album ever again. I do listen to the b-sides from that era on a regular basis (as well as a few of the extended versions), but overall, I can't take that album anymore.
I think the album is a great piece of work, but it NEVER gets played in my house. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

I hear ya. That's cool. Nowdays I listen more to the 90s stuff and later... I think the 80s are definitely the best, but they give me a feeling of "nostalgia" and I don't like that.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
That's because u're in ur 30s.
I, too, listen to more stuff from the 00s. I hardly pull out the 70s and 80s cds. I do listen to the b-sides from the 80s for some reason, but I don't do the albums much at all. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Obviously Purple Rain. more hits. So evil girl, if one of us has a date,
With the undertaker, which one will it be?

are they hits if you are on a desert island and all of humanity is gone and you are the only one listening
anyways this is not a fair vs. thread .. the abundance of sott causes bias when a need for more variety is a neccessity when only picking one record package
pr should include the b-sides at least so it can compete in variety and length
if this were done obviously pr would slay sott .. as good as sign, girlfriend, place o your man are .. pr beautiful ones computer blue i would die for you mixed with 17 days erotic city god easily trumps
