You got to be kidding eek Sounds like a Choir! How does he get it to sound like that? I know he can go back and sing in different octaves but how does he get it to sound like so many voices, for those of you that know about musical engineering or recording?

I know nothing of music recording but he uses a technique called multi track recording.

He uses the same method when he plays every instrument on a track.

He will record one instrument and vocal track at a time, then mixes them together so it sounds like a band.

He uses different singing techniques, sometimes even for one register, to include different "colours" and make his voice sound different. In singing, there are basically four "modes" you can use - "neutral" (the "easiest" and "softest" sound - it's usually quite full of breathing air), "curbing", "overdrive" and "edge" (the latter being the more dry and almost screaming-like sounds, where you try to not let any air out of your body while singing.

If you combine all these modes AND sing them in different octaves, put accents on different notes (the third or the second of a harmony) you can actually achieve a choir of only your voice to sound like many, many different voices - a real choir.

hate it.

Prince should have a strict limit on how many tracks he's allowed to layer of his own voice.

Great info, Dave. No one works the "edge" like Prince does. In fact, his vocal inflections have become so precise these last ten years that I often worry he'll lose or forget how to edge.

Ever heard of 'multi-layered' vocals? Listen to Adore or Man O War.

There's no bass! Epic track, if he kicked a show off with this one it would be too much.
