I looked at your profile to see how old you are and noticed you're a teen...

Do you have BFF? Another girl that you tell EVERYTHING to? Someone you don't mind changing in front of, sharing clothes, even makeup with?

That's what Prince is singing about: How women are really close to each other in an intimate way... sometimes closer than to the guys they're with.

He's asking if he was her "girlfriend", would she then share those kinds of things with him?

I love it... it's a deep concept. smile

There's your answer in a nutshell, at least, up until he goes into perverse Princedom. There his request sound more bi-curious than genuine "I want to be to you the equivalent of what your best female friend is to you".

One of my favorite Prince songs, nonetheless.

Where's the perverse and/or bi-curious part?

Releasing it as the 2nd single from SOTT, killed SOTT as huge commercial success. It was with this song that radio convinced itself that Prince was too weird and said " Nobody digs your music but yourself!"...... sure "I could never take the place" saved the album enough for a Grammy nom but by then it was too late.

You also forget that U Got The Look got to #3

It's certainly an interesting idea, but not my favorite song, musically speaking.

Uhhh, NO. How do you even arrive at that curious idea?

I think that's a bit of revisionist history. The song wasn't a hit on Pop radio (#67) but it did well on R&B (#12), similar to how Anotherloverholenyohead performed in '86, and was quickly followed up by TWO pop top 10 hits, U Got The Look (#2) and I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man (#10) along with Hot Thing as another hit at R&B (#14). This is, also, not including the incredible amount of airplay received by Housequake and Adore, despite never being released as singles. Outside of Purple Rain, no other album by Prince has been more successful overall at capturing airplay.

If you want to look for a song that killed Prince's airplay across the board, you need to move forward an album and look at Glam Slam which failed at Pop radio entirely and barely scraped the bottom of the top 50 on R&B. The follow-up I Wish U Heaven didn't do much better. LoveSexy struggled to go Gold.

& to add if no-one else has said it: the song concept is based on Susannah and Prince's relationship in relation to Susannah and Wendy's sister-hood. From my understanding, Prince was 'slightly' jealous of their relationship and it spawn a song. I'm not sure how true that is but, that's the creative genius we know that P has when it comes to writing a song, lyrically.

Maybe amberella should get a bit older then age 14 to get it.

It's simply one of his signature songs. It definitely belongs in the top-10 of best Prince songs.

Maybe it's not some much bi-curious as it is perverse. Does that make sense?

Oh well, we are talking about P's lyrics. He played on both sides of the friendship fence in this song.

One minute he's saying that he wants to be like your "female" best friend (washing hair, making breakfast..etc) and the next he talking about drinking every ounce of your bathwater. Which is something that I'm pretty sure best friends don't do.

That's probably where the person who started this thread got lost.

I still think it's an incredibly strange song-the vocals, the lyrics, and even the beat. I thought, maybe when I'm older I'll understand why people like it, but..no. My friend says that's her favorite song by Prince and I'm like "not you too!" Tell me why you like it cuz I aint gettin' it. confused

STILL?!/THEN let me tell you about a stupid fight i had with my lover this summer /i have a 1acre lawn by a stream/ all his ass has to do is tend to it/nothing else/ he is waited on hand and foot!/after a 20 minute argument i locked the tool shed grabbed the phone and a bottle of absynthe and headed toward the bedroom/ he chased me up the stairs saying-you are just going to call your girlfriends and tell them what a jerk i am-/ i turned around held out the phone and said-HELL YES I AM!-/ NOW HAD HE BEEN EMOTIONALLY AND MENTALLY CLOSE ENOUGH TO ME I WOULD NOT HAVE FELT THE NEED TO CALL MY GIRLFREINDS= I WOULD HAVE BEEN SHARING MY FEELINGS AND IDEAS WITH HIM/ pretty simple!

live simply, love generously, care deeply, speak kindly, be loyal

i miss Camille... he had more depth and passion in such fleeting moments of brilliance, than today's jehova P has had in many many years.

If I Was Your Girlfriend is also my favorite Prince song of all-time.

It defines everything I've come to know about him.
