What did it rip off?

I don't have the thread to hand, someone else will have to link to it. Was a youtube video, it was as blatant as feel, vibe and some lyrical constructs.

Not sure that rip off is the right description. Is there any proof that Prince heard it?

If he did hear it, there's nothing wrong with being inspired. Maybe he thought to himself, "what a boring track that is, I can make something along those lines but 100 times better."

For me Colonized mind is a classic and certainly not diminished in any way, even if the inspiration did come from the above track.

RIP sad

Haha, come on now. There have been a good number of "Prince ripped off X track" threads on the org over the years some carry more weight than others and some as you suggest could be mere coincidence. In this case where the opening bars near enough provide the full tempo and instrumental backing for Colonized Mind and where even the "No responsibility" line, intonation and all is lifted, not so much.

Prince added in some horrible lyrics where he showed total ignorance of evolution and took digs at single parent families and voila.

Colonized Mid was one of the few interesting sounding tracks he produced in the 00s to me, that it was a rip off was a real let down. I wonder how many people who rave about it have heard Quit It.

Miriam Makeba died in 2008, Colonized Mind was released in 2009. Maybe whoever controls her estate will eventually get in touch.

Miriam Makeba - Quit It

I have listened to cover songs that didn't sound as close to the original as this. This is a great song. And Prince's cover of it is too.

There is also that song that sounds almost exactly like "Kiss" words and all. I cant think of the name of it, but it has been posted here too. Prince's cover version of that song in "Kiss" is pretty good too.

Prince is going to want to shut this site down just for inciting lawyers. lol

They are similar but y'all are exaggerating. I don't doubt this was the inspiration for Prince's song though.

I just went through Lotus a couple of days ago and I must say it was a good album. A couple of weak spots but overall pretty good. I liked Musicology and 3121 but it was my favorite album of his since TRC. It has a similar sound musically so that's no surprise.

Yeah, same groove exactly. Not the same song per se, but the same groove.

Totally disagree this is a straight up rip off.
