I took it as meaning that he would live his life on the run, always moving from one place to another, never staying anywhere too long.

I'm sure he simply meant that he would give up his life as a budding musician in the recording industry and become a singing taxicab driver, making an honest steady paycheck in the fast-paced streets of New York City.

time flies.

nod

In Minnesota, "Taxi Cab" is street slang for the female genitalia.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

This gives 'calling a cab' a whole new dimension. I've got to get me over to Minneapolis. Taxi! Taxi! biggrin

So if thats the case, Prince is just stating his "Make love not war" philosophy. Still it was one of the weaker tracks on Controversy. And the imagery is revisited then on lady cab driver, where the lady driver is the owner of the cab (ie: the genitalia). So both songs Prince is singing about fucking his frustrations away.

So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

Yup. Also, think about it in terms of the times--when John Lennon was shot by "fan" Mark Chapman after exiting his limo... Living your life in anonymous taxicabs going to anonymous destinations is much more preferable to that...

so a lady cab driver is a lesbian?

I also wonder if the 2 songs were a nod to joni mitchell

*but I aways took it as meaning 'on the run' as someone else said
