Prince music grows on me.

Prince music grows on me. I can remember listening to Parade at first and thinking WTF is this but after a while I grew to love it. This year he released 20TEN and before I even gave it a chance I read other peoples opinions on the org and even on facebook that it was shit. That made me not as enthused to hear it. Once I did I wondered WTF is this but after a few more listens it grew on me and now almost every song on there with maybe the exception of one are to me, superb. Prince isn't the only artist I listen to but he is my favorite. I grew up on him and I will continue to enjoy and respect his music for as long as it appeals to me. One mans trash is another mans treasure.

I find that his music rarely grows on me. If I don't like it immediately, I almost never do.

I've been fortunate enough to love most of what he does right out of the gate.

When I first heard Chaos and Disorder I thought it was crap. I thought way to go tell WB fuck you with this record but don't leave us fans hangin. After a while I actually learned to love that album. I guess I just wasn't used to Prince taking a country music approach.

I agree 100% you can't take folks opinions for gospel-Prince is great! A musical genius and I hope he keeps giving us great music.

It use to be that way for me, but even after repeated listens, I'm still not really digging 20ten and I'm haven't L.O.V.E.D. a Prince cd in quite a while.

Some stuff grabs me instantly.

Other definitely takes time to grow on me.

Both ways, some in both methods, become absolute favourites.

nod

I like 20Ten better than most of Lotusflow3r or Planet Earth. If I pulled the songs off both of them that I like, I wouldn't have a whole CD. shrug

I've found that with all his albums since I started listening in 1984, there's only 2-3 tracks that I think are instant classics to my ear, and all the others have to grow on me.

i know it sounds a bit wanky but there really is hardly anything prince that i don't care for, i can never pick favourite songs or albums cuz that's just far too difficult, i love nearly all, most equally.

but what i do notice is that some songs that i didn't rate too high in the past i'm really digging these days, they've grown on me

the most recent omg how did i never enjoy this song is 'slow love'.

beautiful, gorgeous. he should sing this during his w2a tour

not wanky at all. I can fully relate! And slow love is a great old tune. Now that you mentioned it I think I'll give it a listen

Definitely feel you on the part about having the opinions of others disrupt your listening experience. For all new music I encounter now I really try not to read any reviews before getting the chance to hear it myself (same goes for movies).

With Prince in particular, since I'm relatively young most of his collection is a matter of discovery for me, so when I come across something "new" it's usually decades after it's been released and thus my first impression really isn't an honest first impression since I've heard at least something about the track/album/project/era to have a slight opinion before even getting to the music.

I'm not really sure if it's his music that grows on me, or if my preferences have matured, or even both, but I like to put some stuff on my iPod that I just kinda like and not necessarily love upon first listen so that perhaps one day it'll come on shuffle and will catch my attention after a few listens. There are some songs that have been sitting on my iPod for YEARS that I'm finally getting into, or songs that I've heard the studio versions of but it didn't really pique my interest until hearing a live version.

Kinda strange, kinda awesome.

I love that you are younger and dig prince. As far as opinions go its good to know I'm not alone on getting disrupted about if I like a song before I hear it

I NEVER listen to other folks opinions..especially when it comes to Prince. The man is amazing and every album he's put out has been representative of his greatness and musical genius. With that said, I'm still waiting on Parade and The Black Album to grow on me as a whole. 20Ten I liked from the moment I heard it, lately I'm realizing how amazing the album really is. Some of his other albums I've liked too, but after a few listens, I realized just how awesome they are...the symbol album is example of that.

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

Man I hated Parade when it dropped. However in time it grew on me. I mean it took over a decade for it to become a classic to me. I didnt appreciate it when it dropped. Hell, I hated Purple rain until I played it over and over an saw the movie to appreciate the music. It took a year and a half of me getting into the greatest cd ever, 1999, to get me infected with "the sickness."

The weird thing is, it wasn't untill SOTT that I loved every bit of IMMEDIATELY. Some releases after that again took time so thats why I was able to give it up to SOTT. However, in the 00's, 3121, , 2010, and Musicology, some of Rave and PE did not have to grow on me. They were already pleasant to my ear. Of course that does not mean that they are on par with much earlier work. It could mean he did reach for that radio friendly music or sound. F.U.N.K. took a wee bit of getting used to and I feel overall that song was really inspired like the old days. Lotus Flower as well. So it's kind of backwards I guess. If it took a while to grow on me, maybe that means the music is more challenging and not ..."traditional," which drew me to his music anyways.

Wow!!! You didn't like Purple Rain at first? That's the first time I've heard that. I was instantly hooked on that album due to the heavy radio airplay of WDC and LGC.

I've always posted that I disliked Rain at jump (amp/org). I hated WDC when I first heard it on the radio. I was like "what in thee fuck was THAT?" I was expecting 1999 part two. Prince had other things in store for me/us. It took a few weeks for me to understand and "catch up" with Prince. I did miss the one man band masterbation funk but I got schooled with Rain and Parade.

Then I read a quick exerpt in USA Today(?) regarding SOTT being released and a "return to his senses" one man band no Revolution thing going on and I was hyped. He didn't give me 1999 part two but the eons of growth from there. I had grown too and was easy to be taken immediately by it.

I'm the same way but, there are times when I hear an album and I'll like 95% of it e.g. MPLSoUND, LoTUSFLOW3R and 20Ten ...

I found out I like 20Ten so much more played loud in the living room on the stereo than on my headphones..which is how I listen to all of my music...but one day I put that album on and POOF...it was like hearing it again for the first time.

Back when i was a spotty little fuckwit, every new Prince album had me drooling.

Now that i'm an older and bigger fuckwit i'm much harder to please, i don't like his recent music much at all, i guess some of it does grow on me, but then.....so does hair.

Romeoblu

Most of his stuff I like straight off the bat.

There are some songs where I go from thinking it's OK to adoring it, most recently with Love Like Jazz.

The only song of his I can think of hating on first listen is Everybody Loves me, then after about 5 spins I was loving it.

Yes Love Like Jazz grew on me and now I too love it. Everybody Loves Me may be the only song on 20Ten that I still haven't fully liked let alone loved yet. It's still cheesy corny in my book but I think that's what Prince's point was in making that song.
