SPIN: SOTT 2nd best album of the past 25 years

Spin magazine just published their top 125 albums of the past 25 years and Sign O The Times comes in at number 2.

Here's what they had to say about it.

Prince's divinely, defiantly eclectic double-album came out at a time when SPIN was all agog. "I guess you know what the problem with Prince is: he's too good," goes the start of Bart Bull's review. "He's so good he can do anything he wants...and sometimes the dumb stuff he does works out to be the best stuff anybody's ever done. Ever." That even-the-dumb-stuff-works spirit imbued an album as personally pointed and stylistically varied as any ever made, and it's aged well enough that, in a 2005 tribute, SPIN's Michaelangelo Matos called it a "one-stop superstore for the past two decades of pop."

Lil Wayne doesn't deserve to be on that list, no matter how low he is.

Controversy, SOTT, and Lovesexy are the 3 perfect albums Prince's done, imo.

Just curious, but where is the weak point(s) on Purple Rain that keep it from perfect album status?

I've always thought the energy drops off after Darling Nikki and it turns into almost a totally different album. Same thing w/ Parade and ATWIAD.

This list was actually published as part of their anniversary special last spring. Not sure why they've just reposted online now.

On another note: I can't believe this thread isn't filled bitching about U2!

Ahhh ok - I got it as part of their current email newsletter and followed the link. I guess because they are doing their best of the year they decided to re(link)publish it.

They should have highlighted at least a couple of songs, otherwise they are not saying much. And it's not even his most stylistically varied album and I'd argue with the "aged well" thing, songs like ICNTTPOYM or "Adore" certainly didn't age well.
