Anyone here a HUGE fan, but kinda tired of it all? I last saw a Prince show on back-to-back-to-back nights in Philadelphia in 2005. 3 nights... 3 shows.
I've probably seen him about a dozen times in concert overall, and have either had, or have, just about everything a fan could get access to.
Pics... bootlegs... albums, cds, vinyl, you name it.
I'm wondering if that's why I'm a getting a little tired of his "schtick".
I'm not so eager to see him in New York... although I have tix. If something was to come up and I couldn't go, it wouldn't be the end of the world.
No, I don't feel I'm spoiled... I just feel like MAYBE... just maybe... with so many outlets to videos, audio clips, visual clips, and you name it... right at your fingertips... I'm a little sick of Prince.
I just accessed a video of Kiss. I never saw the performance before, but I was kinda like... "Okay, another blouse. More of the same moves... with a little less edge... yadda yadda yadda. Maybe your parents told you about him!! Yadda yadda yadda (the promo)
Maybe I'm getting older. lol (39)
Yes, I still have my faves that I can listen to at any moment, and I still enjoy exploring the new material... but have any of you heard or seen SO MUCH, that you're like...
ENOUGH ALREADY??
Or am I just having one of those Pop Life days! lol The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

^Yeah I saw 2 of 3 Philadelphia shows in 2004 & have tix to the Dec. 15th show, but the setlist he's performed lately have me a little hesitant on going. I'm taking my kids & this is what's making this exciting. MantuaPharoah I have a feeling we reside VERY Close to each other, but I feel your pain!!!

It may be one of those pop days...but I see what you mean. You want something different...something new to capture you and make you feel alive again perhaps?
I know I get that way, and have to go and listen to something I don't listen to so often. That's usually when I find a new gem or start to appreciate a song more.
I do get that "bummed out" feeling though. Like now with one of the NJ shows cancelled, I'm feeling kinda "lost?" I feel like maybe I'm expecting too much from Prince..maybe I should find someone else to entertain me..but who else is there that has what he has? No one. Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

I'm not tired of his music new or old, however I am in no hurry to go to a show until the setlist are updated. I still play 2010 on a regular basis. The same is true with all his music from the past ten years. His lyrics may be a lot deeper now but I still like them and the musical arrangements. I like the focus on the music and not so much on choreography and such in recent shows. My complaint is I'm not paying to see Lets Go Crazy and U Got The Look again and again. Guitar needs to be dropped to. In my opinion that is one of his weakest songs. Play Wall of Berlin and maybe dare I say Call My Name or even Lay Down. Oh yea and please no harmonica.

Its called middle age, and a little bit of pop life. At 43 i envy fanbases of older acts like the stones who continue to get great reissues, remasters, documentaries etc. Theres nothing about his model that suggest there will be any exploitation of the vault, recorded concerts etc. in conjunction with new media. And that is tiresome, now that we are at an age that we can afford certain efforts we are left trolling the internet for torrents like teenagers.

Very good point! Remasters/reissues,DVDs of old tours,etc.....all of that stuff would create alot of excitement with longtime fans.Prince doesn't really allow us to *celebrate* his legacy and I think that's why so many fans are bored.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
And Prince himself appears bored, he hasn't done much to promote his albums in the last 10 years as if he knows that his recent output doesn't stand up against his old. Often he'll say "This is an important album for me" but then do virtually nothing with it. "The Pentagon controls every word and image the American people reads or sees in mass media."
Richard Perle 2004, at a press conference in the Pentagon.

Same here! I'm 44...seen him over 20 times. There was a time when I would do anything to see him. pre-Interntet I found out where the aftershows were, back before they were actually promoted. I don't even know how I figured that out..where there's a will..
I live in NYC and I too saw him 3 nights in a row at MSG. I also saw him in 2006 with Tamar at the Nokia and in Bryant Park for the morning show, whatever it was.
Ugh, I'm bored writing this. lol I'm over it. It has nothing to do with MY age, maybe his. He really does seem bored and I think is much more into his religion than he is in any kind of artistry. Which is fine. I hope he's happy. And he needs money like anyone. A musician makes money by touring. And this isn't for die-hards. This is for Joe Public, hence the set list, which is reeeeealyy tired.
I didnt even bother trying to get tickets. I enetered a couple of contests, if I win I'll go in style! But I'm not losing any sleep.
As for the age thing and being tired, I am into a whole new kind of music with artists that I am as excited and obsessive about as I EVER was with Prince. Maybe more so if you can believe it. So that itch is taken care of. And I am definitely full of energy, passion and excitement about them! So screw the whole "I'm getting older" thing.
Prince got older too. He changed. That's ok. nobody's fault. He gave us greatness. And we were there to witness it.
I was there from '82-2006. That's a good run. Be well, Prince! I will always be interested and always take a listen, but things change. [Edited 12/3/10 3:23am] Purplehead

I've always had a compulsion for music and when I became a fan of P it was like somebody threw gasoline on something and lit a match. I was 'on fire'. I loved every moment of it and it was the perfect time for me becoming a fan of P's body of work. Emancipation was a resurgence of sorts for P's music and I was able to see Jam of The Year (Miami) that year. Mind you, I was a new fan but, knew of P's music and that was it. Just the 'radio' friendly stuff and some videos on MTV at the time and such.
I find myself getting into a 'relaxed' mode when it comes to P's music and such. I'm not 'super duper' excited anymore. I've been a fan since 1996, so it's been a good strong 10yrs. I'm 41 now and perhaps I'm slowing down. When I see P in concert, I'm not losin' it, like perhaps my wifey or other fans I glance around at. I am in awe of his stage presence and his je ne sais quo. When I say that, that reminds me of when I saw him at 3121 Las Vegas, I was just in 'awe'. That's very rare and far in between that I feel like that about anything but, I feel when that 'feeling' is gone is when I'll still be a admirer of his work but, I won't be buying the memorabilia and albums so quickly and such. Most likely by that time P may no longer be performing and putting albums out like he does. I pray when that happens he's went 'In2 The Light' and then hopefully, GOD/Allah willing we'll still have music floating around or coming out.
In other words, I haven't given up on him or the Love4oneanother just yet ... LoL Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

This thread is actually turning out to be better than I thought it would be. I actually thought I'd get ripped in here.
But I think you guys helped me figure it out. And "maybe"... in a weird way... Prince is right about what I'm about to write.
When I downloaded that Kiss performance that made me "roll my eyes", it wasn't "new and exciting". I've heard Kiss a THOUSAND times. And now with the internet... let's be honest... it's EASY to find videos, clips, and pretty much everything you want within 2 minutes. And that's the HARD to find stuff! lol
So I've realized 2 things.
Maybe it's time to retire the old and now (dare I say) BORING classics that we hardcore peeps have heard and seen time and time again. True, I'm excited about seeing Prince, but I don't want to see Kiss, or Purple Rain, or Delirious. I've been there and done that... so so many times.
And secondly... the fact that so much of Prince's music is uploaded and accessible takes the edge and excitement off of seeing him perform live, because even though it's new, us hardcore fans have ALREADY been there and done that, via links, torrents, etc. Hmmmm...
So is Prince actually right about not wanting his stuff accessible online? Hmmmm...
And if that's the case, what else is he right about? Should I become a Jehovah's Witness too??? LOL Oh, hell naw!!!!
Thanks for the cool and "on point" responses. The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

I'm totally feeling you on this. Madonna has managed to reinvent herself on each project, Prince kinda stalled this past decade, leaving me uninterested and disappointed. When I walked out of the Nokia theater a couple of years ago, I knew it was over between us.

The interesting thing is it has become a double edge sword, so to speak. I find that when I want a Prince Fix, I tune in on-line and I have a station I listen to that is 'quiet as kept' and you have to be a member of the so called 'Purple Circle' that's what I call it to know about so said station. They play boots mostly and live shows (recent and older) and then a few so called hits in between. My goal has always been to hear the hard to find stuff and unreleased gems like:
Charade Chrystal Ball Dream Factory
Music of that vein. I agree with you about putting away the 'older' music but again, there's people like me who wasn't there when certain music was put out missed that experience and then again, I've 'kinda' been there and done that.
Wifey and I have been to Minneapolis. We've 'Party Up' at First Avenue, we've seen Paisley Park with our own eyes. We both co-own a White Cloud Guitar we bought during the 3121 Las Vegas shows.
As a matter of fact, I've even MET Prince which I never thought I would and was a 'by chance' meeting somewhat and then a gift from GOD/Allah to have met him the way we did.
It's all apart of the experience.
The more 'seasoned' and hardcore base admirers of P that have been there since album number one or two and actually owned the vinyl know what I'm talking about. I find myself sitting around and talkin' with my close friends who are admirers of P's music stories about how they bought so said album or how the first show of Prince was. That's what's it's all about. Finding what part of that experience is where you fit in, the part you love.
I've been living a reality and dream at the same time. I thought that after I met Prince something would've changed but, I was on cruise control about that time. I think that's when I wanted to get more. I have a compulsion for music, to say the least ... Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

I thought I was the only one who was having these feelings. As much as I love Prince, I'm tired of the same-ole, same-ole.
I think what pushed me over the top was the LotusFlow3r dibacle. I felt so ripped off by the web experience as a fan. It was as if he didn't care the quality of output on the site. Not to mention you had to "work" to get the videos, music, pics, etc. I don't understand why he just can't put a "download" button next to the file.
When I got 20Ten, I was highly disappointed as a fan again. I just think the album is horrible. To me, it all sounds like unfinished demos. I have songs that I like, but as an album, I just didn't like it. This is probably the first Prince project that I was truly disappointed in. There have been others like Planet Earth that have not been great, but I still managed to find something "good" about the project. I can't say that with 20Ten.
I'm kind of excited about Welcome 2 America, but not sure if I will be disappointed as a fan. I've read reviews and setlists from the recent shows and they are pretty good overall. I just don't want to pay $200 to hear him play other people's music. I came to hear his back catalog and recent output. Not a Sly Stone greatest hits show. or a GCS greatest hits.
Like many of you, I would love to have back concerts and old outtakes, but I don't think it will happen. Imagine him doing something like Bruce Springsteen did for Darkside recently. That new boxed set from him looks like a Springsteen fan's dream. Imagine having something like that for 1999, Purple Rain, or SOTT?! A documentary featuring many of the people who worked on the project with Prince (engineers, management, old acquantances like Lisa, Bobby, Jill, etc.) would be really cool. I would love to hear stories of when he was writing these songs from his perspective and what his thought process was at the time about The Time and Vanity 6 and what he wanted to achieve with their projects as a writer and producer. IMAGINE THAT?!

You'll have saturated yourself with prince music for too long. It's not the internet's fault or his but your own. I experienced the same a long time ago. For a couple of years I would collect anything I could get my hands on, but that just tires the mind and limits it too in the end. It's like being in love with a girl and spending all your time with her. Don't do it, you'll ruin it.

That may be true for some people, but I don't think so with me. I used to go out of my way to get Prince music and items, but now, I don't go overboard.
With that said, I don't listen to Prince's music for hours upon hours (like I think some people do here). Nor do I have all of Prince's music in my iTunes library. I may have the music, but I don't want any trax from Kamasutra to mess up the flow of my playlist.
I look at myself as being a Prince fan just like someone that loves sports. I may not always know every stat, but I do love the man and his music. I will do that until I die. Being a fan is like being a fan of a sports team because you have ups and downs.
I'm praying that we are in a low moment now and the next project will be great. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Not tired of the music but fed up with the chaos and disorder surrounding the Welcome 2 America concerts and the money I am going to lose! "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Here's a clue: Stop worrying about it. Why are you so pressed about Prince that you have to think, "Man I am just tired of it all." Tired of what all? The economy? Racism? Homophobia? Famine? Yeah, those things are pretty damn tiresome. Being a Prince fan is a detail. A checkbox. Something people ignore about you despite it being super corny. It's not that deep. Prince doesn't owe you anything and you don't owe him anything.

i think its because youve got older and you realize that all this stuff is for kids really, dont get me wrong i bought into the whole thing too with symbols on every wall in my house but all that has gone for me i very rarely play his stuff now and i am leaving pop music in the hands of a new generation and i am trying to get old with a bit of dignity.

That's true, not sure why anyone makes a big deal about getting bored with something. The notion about "being a fan forever" is a myth, everyone should accept that people change, taste change, other stuff come up. It's not like any artist would listen to individual complaints like this and cater to them personally.

Never thought this would be the case but when I travelled to see him in Rome/Milan last month I actually walked out of the Milan concert after PR so that I could get the public transport in time...
The shows in Italy were great and I was front row both times but I knew that after seeing 17 main shows and 4 after shows in London 2007 that I was saturated (okay so 21 times is a little obsessive).
Point being I never thought I would get saturated so I'm really surprised. Thing is I'm not gonna react and say it's something wrong with P. He's doing really well with a stripped down band and the repetitive/limited set lists are working well.
I've just seen him too much now...

I still appreciate the music (some albums more than others), but my "collector" phase is over.
Non-music items such as books, tickets, calendars, photos, etc. hold no interest for me anymore.

live you may be bored because prince turns all his songs into show tunes, lite jazz jams and bar band cover tunes
these songs including his hits need to be played properly .. with sex and fire dripping all over them .. not renatos cheesy jazz licks, not with peter paul and mary folk harmonies, not with stock drummer after stock drummer.
i have no doubt that even a song as overplayed as lets go crazy, would blow your mind if prince played the full 12 inch mix AND had a band that could play all the important instrumental parts.
in fact i am pushing for a 12 inch tour .. all songs the full 12 inch versions
prince is surrounded by studio musicians, musicians with no passion ... his setlist has fallen flat for decades as a result .. worst yet im not sure he cares either .. i really dont enjoy all the bad cover tunes and band members singing .. i mean if it were vanity or morris day, people who cared at one point, that would be different, there is passion there, but these back up singers are really boring, even if they can hit the notes they miss the heart by a long shot.
prince is lonely and has settled for less, and so have his fans. yup you bought all that crappy music out there and now no one makes good music anymore, not even prince. we gotta push the bar back up, prince is too comfortable to be an artist instead of just a producer.
but in response to the actual thread. i am sure you know that you are lying to yourself. you will carry on as you have always done, this is a momentary pause in your obsession, we all need it from time to time, but in say a week i am sure you will watch the kiss vid again and be like .. damn i love prince i gotta get some more

Yes, i know what you mean. I listen to his new stuff when it comes out, (I still enjoy 3121 and PE, not so much LF and MPLS) and I will go to the concerts in the UK which will be great - goes without saying, but mostly the excitement is gone from all things Prince i'm afraid. I don't know what could re-vitalise it TBH.
In order of possibility:
Remasters? maybe Remasters with additional content? probably. Officially releasing SOME of the prime material that we all know is knocking about somewhere? (releasing all would be too much, and I probably woldn't bother with most of it - as now with a lot of the unlistened-to live boots that I have) - probably An official biography/career reflection type book - definitely "Lisa, i'm gonna give u the brush, and u're gonna paint the side of the train..."
