The time I heard Prince was in the year 2002-2003. I was in the car about to pick my little brother up from school and I heard the song "Kiss" for the first time. But at first I thought it was a new song because they kept playing it on the radio over and over again. And I thought it was a woman singing it. lol lol Then one night I remember my dad mentioning Prince and I asked him who Prince was boxed and my dad looked at my shocked and starting talking about how our generation doesnt know what music is blah blah blah so one day, he decided he was gonna get the Prince Greatest Hits CD and he did and he played the music and I didnt think he was that bad. nod But Im not gonna lie, at first when I saw him, I thought he was White, I thought he was gay, I thought he looked like a girl and all these other things but that didnt matter once I listened to his music. And there was one song that offically got me into Prince and that song was "Little Red Corvette." cool I just thought that song was simply amazing and unheard of from my generation lol lol. But its a classic song that I still love to this day. nod And I think Prince is a very underrated musician and guitarist who deserves alot more credit than he is due. So yeah, thats it. nod

oh and sorry I posted my whole life story on how I became a Prince fan boxed

That is so cool that your dad actually made sure you got introduced to Prince! He's right though, the younger generation doesn't know enough music history... I have started listening to some of the jazz legends, and soon I'll go researching among the funk that were before/alongside Prince as well as some of the greatest songwriters covering all genres of our time...

First time I heard Prince was when I secretly listened to my older sister's tapes, among them Lovesexy and especially Alphabet St., Dance On and When 2 R In Love. Ever since I've been a fan of his music. But when I saw him live for the first time (ONA tour) I was absolutely blown away! I had a rare feeling of being in the presence of greatness, feeling privileged and just trying my best to absorb every sound, word and move from this man because there is so much to learn. My all time favorite song, which I never ever get tired of hearing (and luckily he still keeps performing it with different phrasings and feelings) is Adore!

The first Prince album that I bought was Ultimate Prince, but the first song that I ever heard was Lolita which I listened to because I found the sound title interesting (It was 2008 and I was interested in hearing what his music sounded like, so I basically torrented his discography boxed

The next song I heard was When Doves Cry (which I listened to because of reading that it was a #1 song on Wikipedia). I remember the synth solo from 5:01 to 5:19 drove me insane.

Then I heard 1999 (also because I found the song title interesting). I remember thinking, "Oh, so that's where that "Party like it's 1999" line comes from. Shit, I never knew that."

Then I heard Little Red Corvette, which was awesome, I played that track on repeat for days. I pretty much listened to that song all the time. I love everything about it and it's the song that got me from a person who was just curious and wanting to know about Prince to becoming an actual fan.

But the song that really made me become a massive fan was Controversy. That fucking blew my mind. It was 7:16 minutes of amazing funk, that song is crazy. Reciting "Our Father" in the middle of the song, the repeated line, "People call me rude, I wish we all were nude. I wish there was no black and white, I wish there were no rules," the drum beat and bass were all so perfect. I mean, who comes up with that kind of stuff?

Then after learning that he wrote, composed, produced and played all or most of the instruments on all his songs that just left me in awe of his talent. Seriously, what a genius. Over thirty years and still creating wonderful music and achieving longevity. He's released an average of just a little over an album, written hits for other artists and probably has hundreds of unreleased material in the vault. Who the fuck can do that? I'm still in awe as I type this post. I've only been a Prince fan for two years, but now he's without a doubt my favourite artist ever. The guy is unbelievable, I'm just blown away by his talent and the dedication that he puts into his craft, he's incredible. A true artist.

The first time I heard a Prince song I was 8 years old and it was in the Purple Rain movie. I instantly fell in love with him. I just LOVED his look in that movie. My cousins had pictures of Prince and the Revolution on their wall and when I would visit I promise I would just stare in amazement. I've been hooked since the mid 80's. lol

When I turned eighteen I began my Prince collection. I purchased Emancipation first and from there I became addicted to ebay in an effort to find some music I couldn't purchase where I live. The only CD I'm missing is Dirty Mind.

I even introduced my children to Prince and they LOVE him! I surprised them and took them to see Prince at the Izod Center on Dec. 15th. I enjoyed watching my kids watch Prince perform in amazement. He is TRULY a star! And he is the BEST...at least in my book! nod

The first song I heard by him was Black Sweat and when I saw the video for it, I thought he and MJ were brothers. lol

Eventually (aka a couple of months ago) I heard Kiss and fell in love. then he was on the BET awards and my obsession truly began. I've been furiously searching for music and and finding it in the most unlikely of places. However, my measly collection is growing.

I don't remember liking Prince until 1985 when I sat in front of the tv and saw Raspberry Beret and Manic Monday on Video Music Box. I'm sure I've seen and heard him ealrier but that's my earliset memory. I was hooked. Then I forgot about him until 1988 when I saw Purple Rain for the first time. I was done.

.......Oh-oh-oh, by the way...He plays guitar.

When I saw the "Purple Rain" video for the first time, early 1985 probably (not sure anymore), I immediately fell in love with the guy. When the movie came out here in Austria I went to see it once and I was totally hooked. I went back 5 more times and then started to buy all the older albums and everything I could find. I quickly became totally addicted ... and that's where I'm at again now, since I saw him live again in 2010. Prince is a genius, all other words do not do his enormous talent justice!

I totally enjoyed reading your post. And I looked at your profile and your 19. It amazes me, impresses the hell out of me, how Prince's music can touch everyone across generations. I became a fan during the Purple Rain frenzy in 1984, but I always found it interesting to hear how younger people discover Prince, post Purple Rain, especially during a time now when he is out of the mainstream and not being played on the radio much anymore. cool

For me, When I was 16 I watch Purple Rain with my sister. She is older than me, so she was a kid when Prince came out. I was not even thought of, but there was a song and it was called The Beautiful Ones and he was singing exactly how I felt about someone during that time. so in college, I was prob the only dorm room bumping Prince songs, well from that movie, kept me confident to hear Baby I'm a star.. Now I'm deep into Prince and all the old school musics.. His music is like an extension of myself and I am a musician/poet myself so I really dig his music. But when I was little in the 90s Diamond and Pearls was my favorite song and I wanna be your lover use to always get played at school carnivals.. So I guess it actually started when I was little. I've dug him ever since I was 16 though and whole everyone was bumping walk it out in my dorm hall, I was bumping Prince, Phil Collins, Chaka, everyone haha.. So.. I shared my story with you guys, my mom always shakes her head and says why you so into him, I never have an answer. But I think music has a connection with people and whoever is in the stream is sort of familiar with one another. I feel that way about real musicians.. but let me stop blabbing.. haha.. hope you enjoyed the read.. btw I just turned 22 and I hate most of the mainstream music from now. I listen to people like K-os, Janelle Monae.. etc.. such music is inspirational. cool

That "so-called" BET tribute to Prince is when I became a fan of his. A few months later when he announced the Welcome 2 America tour, I knew I had to get tickets and from there I brought of Prince's "The Very Best Of Prince" album. Then I became really hooked on him after that! razz (I want all his music now!)

Sad, a fansite thread that starts "how about a thread that shows Prince some love".

That's not to mean he's perfect(or that the the author of this thread is wrong to start a thread showing him 'love'), but the way people rip into him day after day here, you'd think he was Bernie Madoff or George W Bush.
