Would you be a fan of Prince if...?

Would you be a fan of Prince if he were only a singer and not a musician, producer, arranger, etc or if he were a musician but not a singer/composer? Is the fact that he has so many facets/talents the chief draw for you?

Prince's performance aesthetic is largely based on his relationship with the instruments. Because Prince knows songs backwards and forwards, he reacts much differently within his own music than, say, Beyonce or Lady Gaga. Prince's intimate nature with his music creates an entire vibe on stage that would not be duplicable.

I doubt it. It's the music that I enjoy more than his singing. Plus, I think if Prince just sang, he wouldn't be as interesting. His voice is part of "the package" of his performance.

There are very few artists who I like just for their singing.

I agree. Whether he's tickling the ivory or stroking the strings, the music makes it better. nod

The "Jack of Many Trades" aspect is what really attracts me. How can a person do so many things so well? I think if you isolate anything such as best singer (no), best dancer (no), there are people who are better. But as a package he is unbeatable.

His songwriting is what gets me, specifically, the lyrics. The attitude, the humor, the genius of it... That's what I connect with. If he were a singer who only sang songs written by other artists...meh.

Actually I would-just for that falsetto alone eek No one and I mean NO ONE can sing like Prince! Even if he couldn't play a note I'd still be his fan wink It was his voice that made me a fan at the age of 9 eek I didn't even know who he was, but his voice touched me.

While his voice might be the most important strand to you, Prince would not have written the songs you so cherish had he not been a multi-instrumentalist. Keep that in mind. The vocals are the last part of the track he lays down.

I have to admit, that's one of the things that appeals to me: the fact that he writes and records his own music without the assistance of ghost writers or musicians.

& yes, the many facets/talents is the 'chief' draw for me. cool

If he was only a rock guitar player, no.

He needs to sing and write and dance and play around on stage.

If he was only a piano player, maybe.....but though piano is gorgeous, Keith Jarett for example, I am a soul sister. I need a singer and song writer to move me.

When I first got into Prince he was "Prince and The Revolution" to me and I was too young to understand (or care) that most everything was him. I thought it was a real band situation. It wasn't until Sign O The Times (which wasn't released with The Revolution) that I really started to pay attention to writing credits and liner notes (I remember clearly going back and studying all the previous albums around that time). So in that regard I have to say yes, I would still have become a fan. But once I figured all that out, that almost everything was Prince (which was at ripe old age of 15), it really did become an important part of why I dig the guy. Like, I was kind of pissed at first when everything became "Prince and The NPG" all the time. It doesn't really mean anything, so I would have rather he just stayed Prince. But he can't really yell, "we are Prince" at a concert, because that wouldn't make any sense. lol

Yes I would be....because its his voice that first and foremost impresses me! The fact that he can play so many instruments is just an added bonus! And songwriting is icing on the cake. I can't think of anything that could ever make me a non-fan! lol

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol
