Hello Orgers, P always gets credit for being a musical genious and a master of 12 or more instrument, other than the ovious instruments that we've seen P play in many concerts, the guitar, bass, keyboards and drum, what else can P play? Has anyone ever seen P play a horn instrument (sax, trumpet or clairinet)?

he can play the saxophone, harmonica, clavinet, synthesizer. I havent seen him play these but he is credited with doing so

I wanna know, if anyone has ever seen P play a horn instrument. People get credited for a low of things they don't do, I wanna know if there are any photos with P and a horned instrument. I guess I should've titled this post, Can Prince Blow.

I checked google for a month and I haven't been able to find one photo of Prince playing one of the horn instruments. If I'm so naive, stupid or a dipshit, then what about you? Can you find one of these photos on google? If so, then I stand corrected, dipshit2.

well i got 1000 pics in my gallery and i know there are no pics like that in there and i don't see anything on bing...but this is a challenge now. if there are pics i'll find em...

I remember seeing an interview in the late 90s or very early 2000's where the guy asked what instrument(s) does Prince not play but wants to and Prince said Sax/horns. I will have to see if I can find that. Its on one of my old vhs tapes somewhere. Maybe someone else can help to what interview this was to make it easier to find. I know I have it but its on one of 200+ vhs's in a box in my garage

over the years I have heard that Prince plays anywhere from 20 to 30 instruments but it has always been said that he does not play wind instruments. Other than the basics like guitar, piano, drums, and bass I have not in my memory ever seen him playing a wind instrument and believe me I have seen many many pictures. Come to think of it I can't even recall seeing him simply holding a saxophone for that matter let alone play it. If he was able to play wind instruments knowing him he would most definitely have done it live by now. I'm sure he understands the notes because he incorporates horns so well into his music but as far as playing goes nuh uh. I doubt it. so what instruments are left that he could be credited for knowing how to play? a xylophone perhaps? a cello? harp? percussion? he plays that. a banjo? that's sorta still a guitar. harmonica? theirs a wind instrument but does he play that? who knows.

yeah having footage on vhs or dvd...but no way to upload to the computer....except for recording with a camera...terrible quality

I think I vaguely remember seeing this but I can't remember which video it comes from because I too have the 200 vhs tapes in the garage

I remember hearing/reading an interview with Prince's first manager and he said that it was PR that Prince played all of those instruments. He said that it was obvious that Prince played guitar, keyboard and drums, etc. but the other instruments were basically exagerrated for PR purposes.

Didn't he learn the sax when he was at school then stopped learning it for some reason, and regretted not having focused on it more?

Watch the video for "Face Down". At the 1:20 mark, he's playing (or at least miming) sax.

I imagine Prince could play almost any instrument you put in front of him, and if he wasn't familiar with it, give him a day or two and he'd know that one too (I seem to recall him saying as much in an interview in Australia a few years ago when Rove was quizzing him on obscure Aussie instruments).

But of course, there's playing an instrument and really playing an instrument.

I read somewhere that technically he knows how to play saxophone, but you'd be hard pressed to find much evidence of it because it's not at the level he'd want it to be for it to be seen publicly (note that could mean anything, given that he's quite the perfectionist).

He's played guitar, bass, drums, keys, etc... for years and years so has no problem switching between them. When it comes to instruments he rarely (if ever) picks up, it would not be so much a case of whether or not he'd know what to do with it, but rather, would his playing be up to scratch (ie. up to his own standards as band leader).

Also, when he has the likes of Maceo Parker in his network of players, why not just leave it to him?

Prince plays drums and other percussion, guitars and keys - including varieties of those instruments e.g. electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass guitar; piano, synthesizer, fender rhodes etc...

The early publicity claims that he played, for example, 28 instruments, could therefore be justified on this basis. Similarly, the liner notes for his debut album listed the many instruments he played on the recording, and again these included varities of percussion, guitar and keyboard instruments.

Over the years, there has been debate over what - if any - wind instruments Prince can play.

He blows a harmonica on the 12" version of Raspeberry Beret, but other recordings have feautured samples of the instrument (e.g. "Thieves In The Temple"), or contributions from others (e.g. "Baby Knows").

U: Did U ever play the horns yourself on any of your recordings?

: Yes, but not often.

To date, however, there is no release where Prince is credited with having specifically played sax on a recording. There have also been reports of Candy Dulfer having said that she has heard a recording of Prince playing saxophone when Prince asked for her opinion of his playing - she reportedly said that it was not bad for a non sax player. The interview was reportedly quoted on the old housequake.com site, (but I've never managed to trace it personally).

On the other hand, Eric Leeds has stated in interview that he did not think that Prince played saxophone.

Eric: "Fortunately for me (and Maceo etc) he can't play the sax. he has no embouchure and you can't go out and buy one, It takes years to develop."

I have never come across any video footage of Prince playing saxophone. The video to "Face Down" featured Prince holding a sax, which he pretended to play during the part of the song where he cues in horns (although the song itself uses samples rather than a real saxophone).

Prince absolutely does not know how to play a saxophone. There's a story attached to Prince's experiences with saxophone playing as a child.

I've brought this up before, but Prince really can't play any woodwind instruments.
