Favorite WTF Things Prince Has Said at Award Shows, interview or TV? I'm listening to Prince's monologue from the One Song, and after listening to the spoken parts from The Rainbow Children, with Prince's voice played at real speed, it's interesting that so many of Prince's "sermons", "monologues", "moments of clarity" or whatever you wanna call it also show up when he speaks and gives acceptance speeched at award shows. Like the 2007 NAACP Image Awards when he used the first verse of "Planet Earth" as a prelude to his thoughts about the digital music age for soul, jazz, and hip-hop music, or the 2000 Soul Train Awards when after Londell McMillian and Chuck D sung praises about Prince, P got in the pulpit and asked the audience to remain standing as he talked about how minorities can become the majority when it comes to community things.
Though this wasn't an award show, when Prince, Larry Graham and Chaka Khan appeared with Sinbad on the Vibe back in 1998, I never saw Prince speak so loosely about spirituality, the business and the respect Sinbad and Arsenio Hall had for him when he was getting bad press left and right. Prince's various interviews with Tavis Smiley have been insightful and entertaining, if nothing else to hear his unique perspective on political, social and racial affairs no matter how esoteric he appeared. Other memorable WTF things Prince has said in the public:
When Prince inducted Parliament Funkadelic into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, P mentioned how George told him to "P" (play) on tapes back and forth.
The interview when he asked the reporter about her pubic hair.
On Tavis Smiley back in 2004, he said "Beyonce is a great musician".
Any thoughts?

I think it's all staged >_> I think sometimes he does not plan what to do, and his mind probably is all over the place sometimes lol. But the whole Beyonce thing... He must have been sniffing sharpies, she is top notch at this moment... but uh.. not like that. lol I love Prince but I think when he does do these things, he stands there, thinks about it, relates it to one of his songs and recites it because his music is a reflection of him and maybe that is the best way of putting in words because he has already thought about it. The pubic hair things.. he must have not like that woman interviewing him or he wanted her to react like O.O "What!!!" She should have said yes my pubic hairs go to my stomach like yours grow to your face... That might have made him react XD:lol: Yeah.. XD

When Prince and Tamar was at the Grammys in 2007 for their nomination of "3121" for Best R&B Album, I was hoping he would win just to hear him say something else that would have people scratching their heads. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

I actually really enjoy hearing Prince talk. He has said some of the most insightful and wisdom-filled things that I've heard. Some of it had me thinking, "hmm, interesting, maybe I should think more about that." There have been a few moments though that I can think of that probably left some people going "huh?"
For me personally, that whole Sunday interview where he refused to talk and has his face covered is like "WTF?" I mean it was too much for me!
The interview where Prince says "the people that do album reviews are usually popsicles salesmen!" I was like "Huh?" But ok, it was funny!
When Prince revealed that he had another person living inside of him and he wasn't sure what sex that person was. I don't personally find it weird, I understand it and where that idea came from. But I'm sure alot of people were like "What.The.Fuck.Is.This.Dude.Smoking?" The only thing that saved him was he looked so darn adorable talking about it.
When complimented on his singing about sex, Prince gives the craziest look and says "I do not! I do not! No I don't. It's spiritual union for me." So cute and too funny!
And not a interview, but in Purple Rain, that little bit between Prince and Appolonia always confused me...
P: Who gave it to you? A: A person. P: Male or Female? A: Huh? P: You're lying, I can tell just by your reaction you're lying. I'm confused! What's she lyring about? [Edited 11/26/10 22:40pm] Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

Are you referring to that horrible Oprah special where he was making up a story to cover his name change - "I feel very divorced from Prince"... (and lying about the death of his child) ? That was embarrassing!

- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Maybe he's implying that she stole it or something. Hence, no one gave it to her, so she was lying when she said a person gave it to her?

Yeah. That made me cry when I saw it.. when he revealed how he was ridiculed and that was when the other person got created inside of him. I mean its kinda obvious. He's always said the symbol was a spiritual awakening or something. And he changed his name b/c his spirit told him too, b/c of the drama with WB. BTW, I love that interview...Prince was a doll in it. He didn't quite "lie" about his son, he evaded the truth with his response:"our family exist, we have many more kids to have, this is just the beginning." Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

Umm, but that was just part of the stories he invented for the press/public. Prince never really changed his name. It was/is/has always been "Prince Rogers Nelson" and its since been revealed the name change was purely for business reasons (WB owned the business name "Prince"). Indeed, he went back to Prince as soon as his final contract with Time Warner (i.e., his publishing contract with Warner-Chappel) had expired.
...and I do consider it a lie in regard to his child. It went well beyond simple what he stated. He presented himself as a family man in the perfect family, even showing off the playroom, etc... while simultaneously discounting the (true) rumors that had come out. The part that really makes it a lie is that he didn't NEED to do any of that. He could have just said he preferred not to talk about his private life (which he's done on many occasions past/present). He wasn't cornered on the street and asked about it, it was planned and intentionally carried out just to promote an album.

atleast he didnt use his childs death to promote his album. Oprah was the rude one to ask him that question on tv
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Are you kidding me? That special was planned and staged down to the last detail by Prince and he wasn't asked any question he didn't approve in the first place. It was all for promotion of the album.
Even the video for Betcha By Golly Wow, in which Prince is supposedly rushing to the hospital to greet his happy wife in labor, was filmed AFTER the child had already been born and died.
So, since you brought it up - he kinda did use his dead child to promote the album.

Not true! Using your child to promote the album would have been..."woe is me, my child died, so buy my album." Prince was going through ALOT of pain at that time and didn't know how to deal with it. The man refused to even say the words "my child died" cause it hurt him so much. Do you have any idea what that kind of pain is like? None of us know the exact circumstances, or matter/cause/time of death for the baby. Prince wrote many beautiful songs on Emancipation. His video for BBGW was very sweet and showed how much he wanted to be a dad. It wasn't his fault what happened..he dealt with it the best he knew how! Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
And just how do you know this for a fact? The man wasn't lying when he said he was ridiculed as a child. Just look at the emotion in his face and eyes..that is of a hurt man. He is of small stature and we know how cruel people can be. Prince dealt with alot growing up..that's obvious. Why he changed his name, we know, but that has nothing to do with him feeling "divorced from Prince" or why he created the symbol. Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

No, that would have just been macabre and completely opposite of everything Prince is about from a commercial level.
Actually we *DO* know the exact circumstances and the cause and the time of death. It's part of the public record now. We even know what the birth/death records state and how Prince tried to falsify those.
..but I like how you feign ignorance and claim that none of us know RIGHT after going on about what he was feeling/thinking at the time. When did he talk to you about that?
The fact remains that publicity was a sham. It was a calculated sham. There was zero need to portray any of that in public. You can speculate on WHY he did it but there's no doubt it was a planned thing on multiple levels.
...and yes the video is very sweet on the surface.

The name change is well documented. If you care to search for the interviews, you'll find his comments on it after he changed his name back.

the thing with oprah is that she is a complete and total moron. It amazes me that millions of fools look up to her
I remember watching a mike tyson interview on oprah last year. He was very hurt over his daughters death and said he didnt want to know how his child died because it hurt him so much. She kept trying to show him how his child died. So f----n rude. The man doesnt want to know and yet she's repeatedly trying to show him.
In the prince interview, she should have focused alot more on the music and album rather then his personal life. Oprah sucks, period. And no prince did not use his childs death for publicity reasons.

probably he meant :
"For all of us, life is dead (meaning : not exciting) without adventure and adventure only comes to those who are willing to be daring and take chances."

How can anyone unfairly judge what Prince or Mayte did at the MOST difficult time in their lives? Tragedies such as those, put people into a state of shock which can last months, even years.
The tragic part of death is not only about the one that is taken. It's the fact that life just goes on without them as if nothing has happened. Those in mourning, have to continue in that life, and while their body might be alive, they are on automatic pilot, going through the motions. But in reality, at that time, they are just a shell of who they are, and any spirit (or love of life if you prefer) they might have, is just absent, gone and dead.
Add having to go through the motions in the public light. The world would "know" their sorrow, but wouldn't "feel" it because it was not their own. The lonliness of suffering, without being a superstar is painful enough.
The whole album was planned to celebrate the birth with the world and in a split second, everything they believed to be true was turned upsidedown. How can you share that kind of "new truth" when you cannot even believe it yourself?
I don't know if there is something more painful than suffering the death of someone you love. But I do know, that those who judge others for how they react, just do not have any idea or concept of how deep the pain is.

We know Prince lied early on.
He lied about his age and his ethnicity, well the ethnicity of his parents.
Another exaggeration was the number of instruments he could play. And they also left out the help he had on both For You and Prince.

Why are we to believe what jtfolden says with regard to the birth and death of Prince and Mayte's baby and the album that came out after that? Is this person in an inner circle that can attest to all of what is said here? If not, where is the proof that what is stated is true? Changing your opinion of Prince or any video or anything else associated with this situation just does not make sense based only on this thread. And everyone doesn't deal with tragedy the same way. Frankly, though, I'm offended that anyone would say Prince is so heartless as to use his deceased child as promotion for an album. Never trust anything spoken in the presence of an erection.
