Im stunned that some folks here think there's "no such thing as a Susannah song."

Anyways...Ive spent the last few days listening to "Around the World in a Day"

"Condition of the Heart" is fantastic.

But, y'all already knew that.

I mean has Prince himself ever said that this song was inspired or written about this person?

As a matter of fact he has: in 1997 he was asked who Forever In My Life was written for and he answered : "Susannah, she knows". In 2002 he was asked whom Adore was about and answered: "Susannah".

I think it's hard to pick one favorite Susannah song, most of them are favorites of mine, you could make an entire cd of "Susannah songs" and it would be the most wonderful collection of passionate and original lovesongs ever.

Interesting! Do you remember the source? I would like to learn more about this topic. On a general level I think that songwriting, or any creative work, is just a little inspiration and a lot of hard work. I believe the songwriting process is rather more mundane than we sometimes like to think.

And when did we start to take Prince's word for anything? wink

The wooh is on the one!

People, love, friends, family, events inspire songs... I don't know why people are making this so hard at times. Some songs are just made up, some are inspired by another persons relationship or happenings.

Other Hear With Us, Old Friends 4 Sale(original) songs that have pieces that talk about other experiences. Susannah Melvoin was his lover, his live in lover as well who painted pictures nude pictures and he mentions that in Crystal Ball. I mean to say an artist/musician would not be inspired by people in his/her life is unrealistic

Susannah's Pajamas, Susannah Blue(instrumental Parade tour jam)

Movie Star about Morris Day?

Cindy C about Cindy Crawford?

Is Papa really about Prince & his father? In This Bed I Scream dedicated 2 Wendy & Lisa.

Was Another Lonely Christmas about someone he knew, knew of, heard of or just made up. It could be any.

A song that he wrote around the breakup was Come Home that was given to Mavis Staples so I would say that was a Susannah inspired track too. "How did it come to this? You living in your world and me dying in mine."

Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

I've always hoped there would be a version of him singing this somewhere out there. It's one of my favs off of Mavis' CD.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

He answered that one in one of his online excursions in the symbol days, when he answered questions from "fams".

He said Another Lonely Christmas was fiction...I believe this was the same time he answered "Susannah...she knows..." to the Forever In My Life question.

Yes, I've always considered "Come Home" a "Susannah song" as well as "101" as they were written around the same time as "Wally" and deals with a breakup.

The Beautiful Ones

Baby, baby, baby - what's it gonna be?
Baby, baby, baby - is it him or is it me?
Don't make me waste my time
Don't make me lose my mind, baby

Baby, baby, baby - can't U stay with me 2night?
Oh baby, baby, baby - don't my kisses please U right?
U were so hard 2 find
The beautiful ones, they hurt U every time

Paint a perfect picture
Bring 2 life a vision in one's mind
The beautiful ones always smash the picture
Always, every time

If I told U, baby, that I was in love with U
Oh baby, baby, baby - if we got married, would that be cool?
U make me so confused
The beautiful ones U always seem 2 lose

Baby, baby, baby
Well, what's it gonna be, baby?

Do U want him or do U want me?
Cuz I want U!
Said I want U!
Tell me, baby, do U want me?
I gotta know, I gotta know
Do U want me?
Baby, baby, baby - listen 2 me!
I may not know where I'm going, baby!
Looka here - I said I may not know what I need!
One thing, one thing's 4 certain, baby
I know what I want, yeah!
And if it please U, baby, please U, baby
I'll beg U down on my knees!
I want U!
Yeah, I want U!
Baby, baby, baby, baby - I want U!
Yes I do!

We know Wendy was 19 when she joined the Revolution in 1983. So she (and Susannah) would have been 22 in 1986 (when the Sign album would have been recorded).

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Anotherloverholenyohead and Adore are my favorite. I was just listening to Anotherloverholenyohead last night (the album version, the Septembre 1986 concert, and the Coachella 2008 concert). The energy and emaotion he puts into that song gives me chills!

As for Adore, I have to say that I have never heard Prince play that song anywhere near the level of emotion that is in the album version. However, I did enjoy the One Night Alone Live version--DON'T SMASH THE RIDE!
