Every night is purple

I think every single night, my boyfriend and I (and friends if they are there) listen to the Indigo Nights Live Sessions CD that I got when my friend bought the book for me... I could have that CD on repeat all damn day and not get tired of it.

So what do you all think? I get SUCH a rush when I listen to his live performances. His studio versions are amazing but when they are performed live it's a whole other level... Do you enjoy is live stuff or studio stuff better? Or does it vary from song to song?

For example, on his LoveSexy tour (I think? Where he was wearing a huge white fuzzy coat) I love the way he performed "If I Was Your Girlfriend" - it was much funkier than the studio version, although I love that too. Though it looks almost like he's lip synching... I could be wrong. sad

Really??

imo the Indigo Nights album is such a crap cd. Those terrible horns are ruining it for me...

Imagine if this was released, the Indigo rock aftershow 28-aug-2007....

Prince is often making the wrong choices.

If I was Your Girlfriend wasn't played on the Lovesexy tour....... you are thinking of the SOTT film. wink

Yeah, he is way better live. If you are judging this from the Indigo Nights CD, you are in for a real treat. A recorded live performance never does him justice, except for maybe a few bootlegs out there. I hope you enjoy your first show, I know you will.

I much more enjoy the studio versions of all of his songs...

But, when the band finds a funky rhythm and ride it out....LOOK OUT!

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

*GASP* I was so surprised to read that people actually dislike that CD! Wow! Well everyone is entitled to their opinion of course. I can understand the horns, for some songs I believe they are a little too much in my face.

Oh, SOTT film? What's that, if you don't mind me asking?? I'm thinking I could get a better answer here than from Google...

Your best bet it finding the VHS in a resale shop, or getting it on eBay or Amazon. My local shop can't even order it so I don't think it's still in print. Another tough one is 3 Chains O Gold, that one I don't own.

I LOVE the Indigo Nights CD cause I was actually at the aftershow (tracks 1-6). I also got to meet the Twins who were there in the audience nuts

Great Memories, was so excited when I realised the CD featured one of the 4 aftershows I went to..............

Indigo Nights I have in my infamous Prince & The Related Artist CD case. I think I only listen to that disc the first time I got it and haven't since. Not one of my favorites but, you have to include it in your collection, to say the least.

I would agree with you about the live performances being sometimes BETTER then the recorded versions of so said songs.

Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

Sorry, but no. All due respect to Prince's live ability, but I prefer his records to his live shows any day. I think he is a complete wizard in the studio. (Well, he used to be.)

I much prefer his live work, but i think that Indigo Nights is a bad example of this.

Basically, anything live, that's release has had anything to do with Prince is going to be shit.

Prince live stomps all over princes studio output. But you have to have listened to the studio versions to appreciate the transition. I don't think Indigo Nights is great CD all the way through nor a great example of his live work. But I do love it for 3121 which was a track that I never really "got" as a studio track. Much funkier live with a bit of "Down By The River" and "DMSR".
Also I appreciate that he released this album in what was really an "off" year for him (meaning he was having a break).

That's awesome, I'm envious! I'm not surprised it left you with great memories!

I'm gonna try to respond to everyone as best I can because I think ya'll have great opinions...

@MikeyB71: I see, a lot of people seem to agree with you, too. I've watched and listened to a pretty good amount of his live work but not a vast amount... since they're now hard to find (especially good quality). Maybe I will agree with you some day - I DO believe there is much better than the Indigo Nights Sessions

@Spinlight: I always thought he was a wizard in the studio, although there definitely are those songs I skip on the playlist... lol

@BlackCandle: I agree with you about the 3121 track. I wasn't a big fan of the studio version - I'm glad I heard it live. It's much better that way!

@Nosferatu: I feel like I've seen your username somewhere else before... deja vu? razz Anyway I'm in Canada at the moment, but I do have a couple friends in the UK who might kindly ship it over my way... smile

Labels such as 4DaFunk, FBG and Sabotage to name but three have all released some amazing live recordings (and studio outtakes) from all points of Prince's career.

While some of these recordings are not on a par (sound quality wise) with your Indigo Nights cd, a great deal of them are.

A huge amount of live Prince material can now be downloaded from the internet for free, and most of it will include full artwork too.

I am making an assumption that you may be a new(ish) Prince fan, correct me if i'm wrong. But if it is live recordings that you want to explore, there are hundreds of recordings out there.

Take your time, dig in and enjoy.

Well, if you have PayPal, I'm more than happy to ship them over to you smile

I live in the UK, but strangely the company I work for is based in Montreal - it's a small world!

I love the horns on here but its just a weak show in my own opinion. I have conflicts with a lot of his live material from the past 4 years. I really did not like the harmonica during the Lotus shows. The keyboards from his recent shows sound weak and kind of corny. I really like Musicology tour from 04. I have always liked it when he uses a lot of horns and a jazzier sound. Probably why The Rainbow Children is one of my favorites.

No no I'm not a new Prince fan, I've listened to him since I was about 5 years old (even though my mama thought maybe it wasn't the smartest idea razz). I know most of his songs, but not most of his history. It's fun to learn new things about my favourite artist!

I try to find stuff and it takes a lot of digging (for me). I'm not that crafty when it comes to finding things...even if they're hidden in plain sight. sad... I'll ask my boyfriend to do it, haha! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, I appreciate it!

@ Nosferatu: Oh geez, I haven't been on a board in years... this is my first time in a long time, so I highly doubt I've really seen you somewhere before. sad I'm just a little crazy sometimes. I do indeed have a Paypal account though, once I get a few bucks I'll definitely get back to you on that! Awesome, thanks so much! biggrin

@ meisme: The Rainbow Children is one of my favs too! Good choice smile
