Most cat's I know really appreciate music and are not all caught up in the gay straight talk. I know most cats that listen to New School Hip Hop say that about P and I find myself defending P in some cases but, this is mostly at these 'ultra macho' forums where sometimes they degrade women by callin' em 'tricks' or b!tches, which I totally ignore.

A REAL fan of music knows P is just 'off center' to say the least. That's the worst I can say about my man too. Then again, I don't keep company with anyone who would call P a 'so called fag', I don't have time for such mindless dribble

As an african-american I can mention Prince to other people within my race, but I tend to tread lightly when doing so, reason being his appearance is the 1st thing that usually comes out of they're mouths & it's mostly ignorant! But when with fellow musicians who are african-american there are no holds barred & they ALWAYS compliment him! When I talk with people who aren't black they have nothing but positive things to say about him & that right there makes me feel good...

co-sign, I find some AAs (like I am also) tend to like the traditional 'in thing' artist who does this or that such as: Jill Jones and 'radio friendly' artist.

I'm always talking about Prince with anyone, and I always get friendly jokes about me been gay or me been infatuated with Prince, doesn't bother me, as an artist I love the feminine side of other artists or the interpretation of that feminine side in art, like Tim Curry in Rocky Horror, Hedwing and the angry Itch, Pedro Almodovar, Cronenberg etc.

"I have so much love for Prince. But why don't they look at me that way"- MJ

As a straight male people don't give me grief for loving Prince's music, but in the black community you are still looked at like you are from "planet Andre 3000", you know? I think somtimes in my community it takes BALLS to be different on any level and not conform...It's a shame that Little Wayne is looked at as the norm, but folks like Janelle Monae, Andre 3000, B.O.B, and the like are still looked at like WTF in the black community, but that's another subject... I'm surprised at that. In my head I always thought a large part of Prince's image is as a direct result of of african-american heritage. The 1970's backwards produced artists that were far removed from the current rap contingent, stack boots and glitter.

Talking of the gay tghing which does annoy me-I've never got it. If we are to use that offensive adjective of "Gay" to refer to Prince coz he wears makeup etc I see the complete opposite. He is so confident on how he appears it actually makes him look masculine. I've always seen Prince as a tough cookie.

Also I've always said the tougher the bloke appears you tend to find a bigger ponce-fussy about food etc.

Prince just gets on with it.

Who cares! Listen to what you want. Prince might have a strong feminine side but he is still far more talented than any of these recent P whipped hetero hip hop and rock clones. Whats the alternative Lil W or Eminem. No Thanks! Prince is positive and has lyrics that uplift you. Straight people should learn from him. I have NEVER been ashamed of being a Prince fan. I wear my tour t-shirts and blast his music out my car. Remember Michael Jackson wasnt cool anymore until he died and now he is an international hero. So in the end to hell with em all!

You get the odd ignoramous, but most guys are pretty cool with it. Maybe in the prince days things were a little different, but nowdays I find people are generally quite interested and curious. More often than not it's them who bring up Prince's name in a conversation (I usually try and avoid it because if I'm not careful I can ramble on for days lol). But people are always like "So... I hear you're a huge Prince fan? What do you recommend I check out?"

But you know at some point the "Is he gay?" question will come up... lol

U would think, but since Prince was more into the blending of everything, AA's kind of find it hard to connect with him, that's why they just stick w/ MJ most of the time, b/c they can relate to him more. Ppl have to try & think hard about Prince's music, whereas MJ was more outward w/ his stuff. Plus what we're exposed to, we usually stick w/ (it's a tendency thing). Now there are dedicated AA female Princey fans, and I've met some super-obsessed AA men, but I find more ppl of other races that are hardcore fans. I've only met 2 Black men that are Prince fans online and 1 in real life. For Black women, only 1.5 ( a real Prince fan & a somewhat Prince fan) in real life.

Being Black myself, I just love his totally different sense of artistic direction & style. The rap/hip hop & R&B thing is cool, but once I discovered Prince, everything else failed in comparison. He's what turned me on to other types of music instead of being stuck in the musically Black culture mode.

That's just my short-term personal experience.

Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! biggrin In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

What does sexual preference have to do w/ it? If you listen to his stuf it grooves. Thats all. NWA is funky, Queen is funky, Parliment is funky, Elton John is funky etc.. America has made sex so taboo that everybody obsesses on it.

Never met anyone in my life (apart from Prince fans, of course) who did NOT think that Prince was gay or at least bisexual. Talking about some 100s folks here. EVERYONE thinks that. That's how it's like in Europe.

I'm Gay, so I don't know if I'm welcomed into the conversation razz

However, when I mention that I'm a Prince fan...

anyone with refined taste in music will form a conversation.

And then directly after; they respectfully compare him to MJ.

I'm sure alot of people think that I'm gay because I love his music but that would be true.

Most male singers were influenced by him.

But I'm sure they don't really mention it because of being judged.

But I get judged everyday so I don't care LOL

I think for some time Prince is/was considered a gay icon.

I don't know that many gays that are into his music.

They like disco or Beyonce or music with little intelligence or purpose.

My straight friends generally respect his talent as a musician, though most of them can't name anything beyond the most obvious hits. My gay friends, on the other hand, can't be bothered with the man at all.

I'm not saying there's any kind of conclusive info, there... it's just a strange trend I've noticed. confused

I find that to be true too! The majority of people that really talk to me about Prince appreciate his music (though they tend to think he stopped singing after D&P confused ) and harldy any think he's gay at all. I've never met a gay man that actually thought Prince was gay, only straight men. Straight men either call him gay or a pimp!! lol All the gay guys are like "his pretty little ass talks about too much pussy to be gay. hell no, we know family, and he ain't one of us." All I can do is laugh!

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

I'm surprised too. The only AA people that I've ever met that didn't like Prince were all under the age of like 22? And that's cause most of them don't know him really. Everyone for sure over 30 that I've met love Prince and smile when I say I'm a huge fan! I think the hardcore rap loving/thug type don't like him, but mostly because that isn't their style of music. They think he's gay, but tend to call him a pimp too. Play Pussy control or Sexy MF for them and guaranteed they'd change that tune! lol

I think for the younger generation it is all a bit weird. There is a converse thing going on whereby they will say "Thats' sooooo gay " but not really care about sexuality. However to look at many there is almost a genderless thing going on-all wearing hoodies etc-so Prince does stand out a little bit now.

uh i dont know where you are from but here where i am just because you are white and rural dont mean u have to like country.thats like saying because im black i MUST LOVE hip-hop.wtf?what makes them rednecks is the fact that they ride big dirty trucks, hunt and fish as often as they can and and yes they are rural.race doesnt really dictate tatses no matter what anyone thinks.its all about what you are exposed to.im a black man who loves old country and it wasnt my redneck friends that put me on to it.it was my pawpaw.
