Song 4 song Controversy can not beat MPLsound!!! Ronnie Talk 2 Russia, Annie Christian & Jack U Off realy fucks Controversy up! P gave away the better jams 2 The Time.

the only one that I sorta agree with is Ronnie... but only becase it is date. However, change Ronnie to Hilly or Barry. and it is good for another two years.

There's not one song on LF or MPLSound that is worthy of even being mentioned in the same breath as any of the songs from Dirty Mind or Controversy.

are you seriously saying that ronnie talk to russia is better than everything on lotusflower ?...come on...these are the views that makes me wonder if people actually listen to his recent music...

The lyrics to Ronnie Talk to Russia are silly and naive, but the music is great. Have you read the lyrics to Colonized Mind or Dreamer or Never B Another Like Me? Or Chocolate Box or Valentina?

Wow, please don't fuck with Annie Christian & Jack U Off.... biggrin

When I got the Controversy LP in ca. 1985, a few years after the release, I played Jack U Off over and over, at the time the sound was very dynamic, imo very refreshing.

I really have great memories to Jack U Off, and on the Lovesexy tour, excellent performance.

both are great songs - from the holy Prince grail..... classic.

i agree his lyrics can be simplistic but that has always been the case and he has written some great lyrics as well....ronnie, talk to russia has always made me wonder why he put it on the album ?...it sounds like a b side and you cant say that very often about his albums in the 80s....i am not a big fan of mplsound apart from ol skool company and dance 4 me but i do think that lotusflower was an interesting album and most of the tracks are far stronger than ronnie talk to russia....

.

think lotus would be around 10 in my favourite albums of his ever released...

I personally think Dirty Mind is better than Lotus Flow3r but MPLsound really gets up w/Controversy

Dirty Mind is a PHENOMENAL album and MPLSoUND is in the same vein as 1999. LoTUSFLOW3R is a one click or notch up then the MPLSoUND and why I think is because I LOVE the Linn Drumm sound P uses.

Controversy's only competition album is Dirty Mind, IMHO ...

I thought MPLSound was going to be my fav of the 2. But LotusFlower took the cake. I didn't feel the Minn Sound on that album, no real synth work, and the linn use was not creative. Now 20Ten the linn drum is creative and different and it works.

I think Prince was just as uninspired by it, did he ever play anything from that album live?

yes dirty mind/controversy are better albums than lotusflower/mplsound but the problem people have when listening to albums is that when they get a new prince album....they hope it will make them feel the way a prince album USED to make them feel.....but the problem with this is that they are 45 now......nothing prince releases now will make them feel 18 again when they are 45.....that is one of the main problems with fans trying to objectively listen to a new album and finding that it doesnt make them feel the way they used to...he cant !!!...

.

i love the lotusflower single disc album....it has some great stuff on it....its not without flaws but thats fine....i dont think it is as good as anything from the 80s apart from maybe batman but i can still listen to his music now and appeciate it for what it is......prince now and me now.......not him in the 80s and me as a sixteen year old.....his music is still very good....maybe missing that creativity that gets harder for any artist to keep producing but he is only feckin human and his back catalogue is as good as any in the last 50 years...

.

cheers smile

[Edited 11/17/10 5:38am]

.

just as a footnote to this.....it would be interesting to hear from young fans about what their favourite prince albums are....i think you will find that recent albums from prince will be among their favs.....i think it has a bit to do with age...not everything...but it plays a part...

[Edited 11/17/10 5:50am]

I'm 38, I think I'm a good judge of music, It's why I LOVE 20Ten, and haven't listened to MNPSound since I first bought it.

I love the LotusFlower album, wish it was truly more of a rock album, but I like it.

I would never compare DM/C with Lotus/MPLSound

It's not even about just being the early work vs the later

But inspiration. Being older does not mean uninspired, there are people in their 80s and 90s who in their craft are still excelling

And I do know of a lot of young Prince fans since I've been on who I've had crazy conversation of the 80's music being their favorite.

He played Dance 4 Me in Monaco in 2009, as well as at La Cigale. He also performed No More Candy 4 U at the same show at La Cigale and he also performed it on Le Grand Journal.

The bad thing about these comparisons is that the style he uses is not the same

Dirty Mind is seriouly a New Wave album, LotusFlow3r is mostly a rock album. I would compare LF with Rainbowchildren is style (RC kills LotusFlow3r) but the styles of music in the comparisons don't work because of genre of music/style being played

MPLSound has far too much filler to ever be mentioned in a "top Prince albums" list...U're Gonna C Me, Here, Valentina, and Better With Time just drag the album down (and in the case of U're Gonna C Me and Here, are poorly arranged with tacky sounding synths...) So, if I'm putting that alongside LotusFlow3r against Dirty Mind and Controversy, it's gotta be the latter. That said, LotusFlow3r is a strong album, and on par with Controversy to my ears (mainly since Controversy has filler of its own.)

If I had to rank them, it would be:

Dirty Mind

LotusFlow3r

Controversy

MPLSound (of course, MPLSound is my least favorite ever, so that's easy to say.)

dont get me wrong....i am not saying his 80s music is not better than his recent stuff...it is better...lot better in some cases...but some people here say everything was great up to 88 then everything was crap ??...thats bullshit and what i am saying is if people are saying that it may not be all down to the quality of the music...it may be down to them changing as a person...getting older...

.

i think if he had stayed with warner bros...he would still be having the hits...maybe not as big but i think he has written stuff that would have charted in the last ten years...

I agree, just plain silly if you think Prince stopped releasing great albums since 1988.

Lotus is a great, great Prince album. So too are dirty mind and controversy. Mplsound is not. Its all personal taste. The style of music also plays a part aswell as age.

I agree with that!! Do Me Baby feels out of place on that album to me, it should have been on DM. I like those other songs you listed too though, just Do Me Baby is in a class of its own on that album.

I agree, with the focus of the album DM, Do Me Baby would have fit perfectly along with Tick Tick Bang

I actually can listen to all of COntroversy, Once I look at the cover of that album I understand that he is dealing with 'issues' so for me songs like Annie Christian & Ronnie Talk 2 Russia work. It's a New Wave album, and those songs are New Wave

I love the way Private Joy rips in2 Ronnie Talk 2 Russia

Mmm...Good Q.

My 2 Cents...

Dirty Mind blows the others away, even, it's Sister record which is largely patchy at best.

Lotus Flower has some interesting stuff, while Controversy has a sublime title track, Sexuality and Annie Christian, so i'm veering towards a tie on that one.

For me, Mplsound just blows!

In conclusion; 1st Dirty Mind

2nd(equal) Lotus Flower & Controversy

107th Mplsound
