I visit it all the time.
It is perhaps Prince's greatest song. Nothing has been as primitive but futuristic at the same time. Nothing has been as guttural. I owe Prince a lot for this song- it may end up becoming my favorite song ever.

I love the outtake version with him on the piano. After hearing that version it's hard for me to go back to the released one. "That...magic, the start of something revolutionary-the Minneapolis Sound, we should cherish it and not punish prince for not being able to replicate it."-Dreamshaman32

Xactly! love both to death. the albumversion gets all freaky at the end; the outtake stays a bit laidback but has lots of feeling in it too. don't need no reefer, don't need cocaine
purple music does the same to my brain i'm high, so high

I agree! The outtake version seems to have a bit more soul in it, for some reason!

It´s one of my all-time favourites. The drumbeat is haunting! See the man with the blue guitar, maybe one day he`ll be a star...

Totally. The handclaps are right there. You can almost picture prince at the piano with just a drum machine in the basement of his purple house. ______________________________________________

Definitely one of my all time favorites.
This is the song I used to play when I couldn't cry. **************************************************

Yes, it's really tough...the released or the outtake version?
...puh, can't decide! | |

One of my favourite songs...the version with piano is
also cool but the one I REALLY like and listen to quite often is that 14 min. rehearsal version. The version at Xenophobia was also amazing...and was one of the greatest, most unexpected surprises during a Prince concerts of all the ones I´ve seen. No other song could have surprised me more than Something In The Water... I had heard about Prince doing Whole Lotta Love and Paisley Park and so on, even Dolphin , during soundchecks...but this one was very special, IMHO. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I dig the outtake version more, not taking anything away from the released version though. Somehow, a bit funkier in the outtake... I am MrVictor....

One of my favourites and I think definately most close to core songs in terms of expression that I have heard from him. I love it!! That scream just blows a hole through me, I can so feel the pain he is expressing. Very real to his emotions song I feel.

The released version doesnt even compare to the alternative (unreleased) version as that is much better and more moving and futuristic souding.
The alternate version is definately one of my fav. songs of his

Agreed. Prince sounds more "real" on this version (and serious) than on the 1999 CD version. I think he's in his "Prince Persona" on the original. Y'know. It's the one from this era ("Sexuality"). The outtake piano solo gets It's one of his best. A classic piano solo on a futuristic-sounding track! What a nice contrast! This version is akin to his ONA efforts because he does not include background vocals. The futuristic synths, chords, and Linn beat are far superior to the one from 1999. I don't understand why he chose the other one.

I've never heard the piano version before. I gotta find that. The album version is a classic. It fits perfectly with the rest of 1999 and the song still sounds great. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

The piano version? Is this the one that features on 'Cosmos'? I LOVE it! Much better than the official track. Otherwise I have NO idea which version everyone's referring to.
