Should Prince Open for U2??? First of all, this is a total pipe dream. I have a better chance of hooking up with 400 women of my dreams, and having them all spend a billion dollars on my next birthday party than this happening...but back to my Pipe Dream:
I was thinking about how Lenny Kravitz is opening for a few 2011 shows on U2's 360 tour. I thought what a great way to get Lenny playing in front of 50 to 80 THOUSAND people. I know Prince should NEVER open for someone. Let's face it, many of us here know Prince should be better than he is. I think he is better than U2 and The Beatles COMBINED. The only way for him to really show it, is to have a few shows with the kings of Popular Music...U2.
First, I would play Let's Go Crazy for him, and let him see that there are not multiple saxaphone parts(see Musicology Tour), let him see that there are ACTUAL LYRICS for this song. I would let him see that there is no section where he chants Go Go Go about 45 times. I would let him see that the lame "Shave and A Haircut Bit" is not in the song.
I would then play a bunch of songs start to finish, and explain to him that if he toured with this setlist, that he could make tons of money, maybe opening for U2 a few nights, which he would blow them off the stage, to the point where U2 would kindly ask him to quit kicking their ass. After the talk with U2, Prince would change his show to have a bunch of female singers singing I'll Take You There, Come Together, Let's Go, Down By The Riverside, Ring My Bell, and then Prince would sing a medley of 45 hits in 10 minutes, and ruin the whole thing.
However, if U2 let him kick their ass, and then Prince went out by himself...this is what he could tour with:
As The U2 Opening Act(shorter set):
Let's Go Crazy Sign "O" The Times Play In The Sunshine Little Red Corvette(short) Housequake Strange Relationship Dreamer Starfish And Coffee Future Soul Song When Doves Cry Kiss U Got The Look Little Red Corvette(full) Purple Rain Anna Stesia
However, if U2 let him kick their ass, and then Prince went out by himself...this is what he could tour with:
Full show on his own tour:
First Set: Let's Go Crazy 5:22 Sign "O" The Times 5:33 Play In The Sunshine 5:00 Little Red Corvette(short) 1:12 Housequake 3:44 Strange Relationship 4:29 6 7:22 Condition of The Heart 5:50 Paisley Park 4:44 She's Always In My Hair 3:30 Computer Blue 4:49 Rock Hard In A Funky Place(obviously with tamer lyrics) 3:39 I Like It There 3:25 Dreamer 5:12 Fury 4:18***
Second Set: Can't Stop This Feeling I Got(original) 2:44 We Can Funk(original) 5:13 Data Bank 7:47*** The Ballad of Dorothy Parker 4:38*** Starfish And Coffee 2:55 Future Soul Song 4:56 When Doves Cry 5:44 Kiss 3:55*** U Got The Look 3:48 Pop Life 3:46
Encore: Little Red Corvette(full) 4:28 Purple Rain 8:09 Anna Stesia 5:11
*** On an occasional basis, songs with the *** would be left out if time became an issue. The full blown show would have around 2 hrs 20 min playing time, but the breaks between the sets and encore would make it a 3 hour night... Almost forgot....The Band:
Guitar: Vernon Reid, Miko Weaver, Wendy Melvoin Bass: Sonny T Drums: Michael Bland, Sheila E Keyboards: Dr Fink, Lisa Coleman Trumpet: Atlanta Bliss Trombone: Greg Boyer Saxaphone: Eric Leeds, Maceo Parker
Common Sense Horns rule: The Horn section could play in many songs, maybe 12 of the above... but instead of forcing Horn Parts in songs like Let's Go Crazy and Computer Blue, just have the Horns where they belong...but it can't hurt to throw them in an extra song or two...but Prince usually overdoes it.

Prince plays for 50+ thousand people by having his own concerts.

If ANYthing, it'd be the other way around. Nice try though.

Yeah, it sure is funny how Prince has had multiple $200 million, and $400 million tours the last 20 years. Anyone with common business sense knows that Prince has made NOTHING compared to U2 touring. I would estimate that U2's 2009-11 tour will gross as much as Prince made touring from 1980-1995 alone. Musicology was the closest thing to a huge profit he has ever made.
As I said, I think Prince is better than the Beatles and U2 combined. He has to prove it. Sure he can get a bunch of people in a Stadium in Europe. But when he plays half assed shows with Female singers all over the stage, they won't come back. I want my 80's legend back. He is and can be better than U2. U2 is my favorite band, but they aren't even half of what Prince is. They are totally kicking his ass live with a hits show that should not be kicking Prince's ass.

U2 has to split the dough 4 ways-now who makes more?
And no he should not tour with them-it would diminish his brand. Which is key in making him bankable when he tours. [Edited 10/16/10 8:34am] 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

May i ask why you feel that prince has to prove that he is better than The Beatles and U2? Also, your assumption that people "won't come back" to his shows, is purley that, an assumption. And i think you will find that Prince has made figures of $40 million from tours, not $400 million. If i'm wrong on this someone please correct me, but i can't see it. And just one more thing, you are not going to get your 80's legend back.......get over it!

I'd like to see Prince make a guest appearance at a U2 concert, but not an opening act, and would be cool if Bono and Edge popped in as a guest on Prince's upcoming shows for a few songs.
But Dave Grohl should show up at one of Prince's shows, or Prince at a Foos concert. I think Prince would let Grohl sing "Darling Nikki" and just play guitar on it, but Prince singing "Best of You" at a Foo Fighters show would be insanely good.
And Prince at one of Roger's "Wall" concerts doing "Comfortably Numb". David Gilmour backed Tom Jones singing "Purple Rain", and Jones just came out with this CD of religious themed songs.
U2 and Prince? Maybe "One", "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own", or "The Cross". U2 doesn't do a lot of guitar solos, just a lot of effects. Although there's "Lemon", where Bono was trying to sound like Prince...

Prince singing Lemon would be preeeetty cool..... although Prince doing the Comfortably Numb solos would be pretty awesome as well

Prince is jealous of U2 for one reason, and one reason only.
U2 owns their master tapes. Island Records made a deal with them to take almost nothing in royalties and tour like crazy to make money, and at the end, they would own their master tapes.
You also can't compare numbers on a time when ticket prices were 10-20 bucks for the good seats.

I wish Santana was taking part of this tour Prince has planned. And a new CD by both of them.

Nah...he shouldnt open for U2 or anybody else for that matter, but I feel where you're coming from. At this stage in his career and with his back catalog, he should be drawing like U2...but he cant. People need to be reminded of how dope he is, but Prince does NOTHING to make this happen. In fact, he seems to do everything to prevent it from happening (itunes/youtube stances).
I had a thread about this that got off track but the bottom line is that if Prince were to announce a major city stadium tour with 60,000 capacities in the US, it would fail miserably. We all know the man wants to get paid, and if he felt he could sell out such a tour he would have done it a long time ago. There are folks who would say "that's not what Prince is about" and "he can make his money in arenas in theaters with multiple nights" etc but the reality is, to quote my man Billy Sparks:
"Nobody's diggin you. Oh boy, what a fucking waste..."
And yes, I want my 80s superstar back too...but it aint gonna happen. He'll get some props when he dies...maybe.

YES!
Overall though, I don't think this plan would work. As kind as Bono is, Prince doesn't have any respect for U2, or seemingly any bands/artists that have earned a larger [loyal] audience than him. He thinks he's better than they are, even though his fanbase is dwindling. "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." - Bruce Lee

As a near expert on Prince and U2, I would assume that Adam Clayton alone probably has more in the bank than Prince does. I have heard that half of Prince's band members have left due to not getting paid, the other half were fired after not getting paid. Prince owes taxes, leaves debts unpaid for years at a time. Sometimes it is because he is just lame with money, sometimes it is due to spending tons of money shooting professional videos that he later decides to leave unreleased. You can look up how much Prince has grossed on certain websites, and I can tell you, it is nowhere near U2. The Atomic Bomb and 360 tours are in the TOP FIVE TOURS EVER....Prince does not even have one tour in the top 20 all time grossing tours...and considering Musicology was his highest grossing tour, it is obvious that there is a severe lack of business sense going on. Sad, because I think Prince is the greatest living, and perhaps greatest musician who has ever lived. Of all the mega-stars, probably the dumbest when it comes to money.
Remember, this is the 34 year old man who let Warner Bros Con him into a bad deal. It's one thing to be 22 or 25 and get a raw deal due to being naive, but come on, he got suckered in Middle Age, and then wrote Slave on his face like it was WB's fault he had zero business sense.
I love Prince more than any other by far, but I have to tell it like it is...he is a total dope when it comes to money...and business...Remember...Money Don't Matter 2Night, unless it means you can charge $20 for a damb Cassette tape of Face Down live, or $77 for a website that you close down in a year's time...

First of all, Prince had the highest grossing tour of 2004
Secondly, why do you even want Prince to do stadium tours? Perhaps the best Prince concert I went to was One Nite Alone, when he toured smaller venues. I saw him in a 3,000 seat arena and sat in the center of the front row. I'd much rather do that again than see him perform at a football field where the sound isn't going to be as good and it would be impossible to have a seat anywher near as close as I was that night. And even better than either would be to some day make it to an aftershow.
Thirdly, what does Prince have to prove as a live performer? He's pretty universally viewed as the best live performer around. WHat does he have to prove as an artist? He was recently named the 7th best artist of all time. A few years ago he was the highest ranking musician listed on the list of the top 100 living geniuses.
U2 has grossed more money in concerts. The only reason I care is I haven't been able to see Prince in concert since the musicology tour.
He broke records with 3121, he broke records with O2. He's filling stadiums this year in europe.
