Prince & The Revolution Live '85 V Sign O The Times video

I finally got Prince & The Revolution Live '85 on video! Hooray for me!. What do you prefer, this one, or the Sign O The Times video? IMO, SOTT has better sound and visuals, but P&TRL85 is more creative and inspirational (though I hate that mirror image stuf during WDC).

By the way: What's the deal with the "rent a crowd" during Baby I'm A Star !?

SOTT, hands down. Better material and better vibe.

The PR video doesn't even come close to SOTT.

I really preferred SOTT.

Here's why:

  • Prince's furry octopus outfit from the Syracuse gig is just embarrassing
  • Prince's poncing about on stage and squealing to tracks like "God" and his "conversations" with God were truly cringeworthy. In fact I can't watch it.
  • Personally, I felt the Revolution was looking a bit tired and tacky by 1985 (that's when the gig happened right?)

SOTT was just wonderful, on the other hand.

Ian,I completely agree!! In fact,I rarely watch the Syracuse video. The outfits were truly awful, and yes,The Revolution looks like they could use a long vacation...lol...

The 'SOTT' video features Prince at the top of his game, with the best band of his career performing songs from the best album of his career. There really is no comparison.

SOTT in a Blow Out.85 seemed like a poor attempt at re-creating "Purple Rain" The Film all over again.Prince spoke out on this in Vibe back in 94 trying to get away from doing a Re-Creation of Video to the stage&just letting the songs speak for themselves.85 was too Campy,The Music doesn't age well Live IMHO.but SOTT just had a vibe about it that just was Cool Musically&Attitude wise for me.

the opening of revolution concert is just wild, Prince has so much energy but overall it's got to be SOTT.

I don't know why I feel this way,but I was kinda disappointed with the 'Purple Rain' tour.Something was missing but I'm not really sure exactly what. All I know is,I was much more impressed with the 'SOTT' tour and the 'Lovesexy' tour.

Even with the SOTT movie basically being re-filmed in the Paisley Park soundstage it's better than the Revolution Live '85.

Definitely the SOTT video, its non-stop fun, funky, great performances ,the Syracuse show is good but theres a few too many indulgent bits and monologues which spoil the flow of the show

Really.. Man, I loved the live version of God from that show.. I hate the recorded EP.
For me, God, Possessed, and How come you don't call me anymore make that video worth watching..
Other than that, Sign wins hands down in my book.
I think you needed to be there at the time to appreciate it... When Prince was new to the world...

SOTT!!Sooo much funkier, loose, fun, and the band could "whoop some ass!!"This band i one of the all-time greats that I think could go toe to toewith almost anybody's band ..EVER!!Bt,I must say that I thin the Lovesexy ban as his best with the SOTT and GOLD/EXODUS bnds close behind.

The Syacuse video is high camp and alot of fun to watch smile

I'm glad that this show was filmed because it gave Prince fans the chance to see a Purple Rain show. It's Prince at the height of the Purple Rain craze. You have a frenzied audience, the over-the-top outfits of the Revolution, the bath tub scene, Prince in see-through lace pants, the mirror effects in When Doves Cry. The whole thing is 80s high camp.

Prince and the Revolution Live is fun, but the SOTT video wins hands down. The band is 100% better, the music is more polished, the scene settings are smoother. It's just an all around better video.

Apart from the 'dancing goons' weren't the SOTT and Lovesexy bands one and the same?

I've mentioned this before, but the mirror image thingy during When Doves Cry is just awful. On the whole, a bad video with some great moments. But SOTT still takes it in 3 rounds.
