TRON

I do too. It's top 5 favorite Prince albums for me. I'm just not as outspoken about it.

One day I want to read your thoughts on it...you express yourself more conservatively, if not curt, and Id like to hear about 1999 from that angle

I'll never mistake your vibe with Freddie Jackson more like Jermaine Jackson being all over the place but Talented.

This is soo not true..(warning bullshit tirade coming up)

DM was Prince becoming Prince..the freak..the one that is endearing to us and what pulled us in. He took his shit to the dirty filthy...he displayed punkish look, music and rhythm ..and that cheap garage geetar..this is where Prince went freaky on us..raw..the tour he was damn near naked...the music was bare as could be for what he did. This is where he created and celebrated his freak image and made his freak manifesto..Uptown ...Head was saying Im going to take you somewhere you prolly never been befo'..oh by the way I fucked my sister ( that content and music is punk believe that). Controversy had him put some of his clothes back on and went ghetto chic-ghetto fabulous etc. The music was more upscale and he had a better system in his house etc. He had more band imput and the music was gussied up more and slapped with a funk groove spackle on its walls. More fully fleshed out songs and stil yes with a punkish attitude behind it. BUT..with another more declaritive Manifesto in Controversy, funk with Lets Work. DM was punk funk and street dirty but Controversy actually "went" Uptown..a musical outrage. Controversy ...is the chicken scratch of P music.

worship defend the funk!!! worship

as 4 me...nah, i'd rather them be separate. nod

Dirty Mind was a style at the time and Prince's music was steadily evolving, which led to Controversy. From there his music was still evolving to the pinnicle of his music ala Sign "O" The Times(Camille, Crystal Ball, Black Album).
Sign "O" The Times wrapped all of these three albums up a came out as his Masterpiece to me that has yet to be topped.

Everything Prince made from Mid 1986 to 1990 was phenomennal. If he can find or remember his formula for making that type of music again would be great and solidify him once again as the one of the greatest musicians in history.

Moonbeam

Once again, RD nailed it. Dirty Mind and Controversy are similar albums, but they are complementary and take different approaches.

Both are essential Prince classics. Both have that youthful vigor and attention-starved mania. Both are Prince roots.

And like RD, I favor Controversy.
