If Dirty Mind and Controversy were a double album would you like it as much as Sign "O" the Times?

Would it be your favorite Prince album ever? I always really liked the double cassette for this and I think the albums fit together perfectly in style and message. Here's the AMG review of the double cassette.

A great two-in-one cassette featuring two of Prince's finest, most eclectic and superbly performed albums. Dirty Mind and Controversy had fine message tracks, seamlessly blended funk, soul, rock and even a light jazz flavor, and mixed eroticism, vulgarity, and humor. While the recent three-disc anthology offers a definitive view of Prince, if you don't want to spring for it and want full albums, here's a great way to start.

No I wouldn't because SOTT is perfect and Controversy is flawed (Ronnie for starters).

I would still prefer Sign O The Times although that does make it alot tougher, as both Dirty Mind and especially Controversy are both favourites of mine.

I think an interesting one would be how The Black Album / Lovesexy double might hold up 'against' Sign O The Times.'
I'm not sure which way I'd go there.

Actually the first time I got thest two albums, they were sold as a "double feature" like tape.

Dirty Mind was on side A and Controversy on side B.

So I first heard these back to back. Made since to me.

yeah, i was spending the night with my uncle back in 84 (so i was either 3 or 4 at the time, depending on what part of the year it was)... and his girlfriend was a huge prince freak... i had never heard anything like it (it was completely different from the stuff my mom listened to)... and i dug it... so, she gave me her tape versions of "1999" and "purple rain"... those are the same ones i have today... nod... i remember she told me told to make sure that i kept "1999" hid from my mom, cause she wouldn't like me listening to it... i was a little older before i figured out why......

nope.Dirty Mind&Controversy are pretty much the same Album but they Cancel each other out.Dirty Mind I Like alot but Controversy has a Funkier feel but Dirty Mind seems more real overall to me than Controversy.anyway "Sign O The Times" covers both of those basis for me.

This is soo not true..(warning bullshit tirade coming up)

DM was Prince becoming Prince..the freak..the one that is endearing to us and what pulled us in. He took his shit to the dirty filthy...he displayed punkish look, music and rhythm ..and that cheap garage geetar..this is where Prince went freaky on us..raw..the tour he was damn near naked...the music was bare as could be for what he did. This is where he created and celebrated his freak image and made his freak manifesto..Uptown ...Head was saying Im going to take you somewhere you prolly never been befo'..oh by the way I fucked my sister ( that content and music is punk believe that). Controversy had him put some of his clothes back on and went ghetto chic-ghetto fabulous etc. The music was more upscale and he had a better system in his house etc. He had more band imput and the music was gussied up more and slapped with a funk groove spackle on its walls. More fully fleshed out songs and stil yes with a punkish attitude behind it. BUT..with another more declaritive Manifesto in Controversy, funk with Lets Work. DM was punk funk and street dirty but Controversy actually "went" Uptown..a musical outrage. Controversy ...is the chicken scratch of P music.
