Prince's new album...

SupaFunkyOrgangrinderSexy said on the "Any1 else tired of lives, instrumentals, & experiments?" thread:

Although an NPG album with this tight ass band would be more than welcome!

How true that is! I really hope for a new album with this band, mainly funk music if it was up to me. This, or a return to his old school Minneapolis synthesizer funk (Linn Drum!).

As long as it's funky, it's alright with me. Prince, kick it! We trust in you... headbang
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Ah well... we all know that Prince's bands don't last too long... once he feels he has done the jazz thing long enough no doubt he'll shake things up again smile

I absolutely loved The Rainbow Children - regardless of the heavy-handed sermonizing, I do like it when Prince has the balls to pursue his mad projects like that with few attempts to pander to commercialism.

This all said, I've probably had enough of the jazzy experimental Prince. I can appreciate that he is probably enjoying himself a lot with the new vibe, and he'll probably doing it for more years to come... but for his next studio album I fancy something a bit different.

So what would you all love to hear next?

  • I'd love another acoustic album like the Truth but better.
  • I'd love a guitar-funk album, Funkadelic style - a definitive piece of work to demonstrate Prince's absolute mastery of the instrument.
  • I'd love another sprawling "concept album" but something a bit dark and moody - where TRC was all sunshine and light, I'd like something with the vibe of the songs "Pheremone" and "Crystal Ball"... where Lenny had his great "Circus" album, Prince could do some nasty dark n moody funk, maybe with a political vibe to it.
  • I'd love Prince to call Jimmy Cliff and get some reggae vibes, just to hear what it would sound like!
  • I'd love it if Prince called up Chuck D and collaborated properly... Prince can bring his guitar, drum machine and the funky sounds, and Chuck can bring the rhymes. Can you imagine a true hiphop-funk merger between these two guys?

Of course, knowing Prince he'll surprise us yet again smile

I'd even join his crappy club if he were to do another album like that.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I'd like to see him come out with something like his 2000 High album.

And if he's ever going to work with another rapper, he should dust off Rakim- the best rapper of all time- and get HIM in the studio.

Man, Ian, you blew me away with the Prince-Jimmy Cliff hookup idea. I'm surprised I didn't think of that myself sooner! smile
My guess is THAT combo could be HOT! P has dabbled in the reggae (17 Days, Blue Light, etc.) but he ain't quite stuck his whole foot in it yet, that I'm aware of anyway. Bet it would be a nice challenge to do it in a more straight-on way with dancehall, old school style, etc.
Him and JC would turn some heads.

I know, wouldn't it be cool? Prince has done pretty much everything else but he's never really done the reggae thing at all properly...

Of course could y'all handle it if Prince got dreads biggrin

I don't know about Chuck D though Ian. If you think TRC was bad, imagine the preaching on that album!!!

I would like to see a collaberation with Common or a like minded rapper (Mos Def perhaps). Sort of like how D'Angelo kicks it with hip hop, but expanded to include guitar work, some Prince production, etc.

Well Chuck D is a great lyricist and rapper... and he might keep Prince focused on the political side of things rather than the quasi-spiritual mumbo jumbo vibe smile

I definitely hear ya with regards to Common, Mos Def etc but I just can't see such a collaboration coming out well... Prince rarely does "real" collaborations - they get to put down a few words and Prince does everything else smile Guys like Common and Mos Def would probably be wasted on Prince coz he wouldn't value their artistic input, he'd make them fit into his Princely way of doing things.

A proper collab with Chuck as co-writer, co-producer etc was what I was after smile

Other than authorizing samples of his music, I think Prince should stay very far away from hip hop. The closest he should come is neo-soul and that he has done pretty well with The Rainbow Children.

As far as reggae, he needs to stay away from that too. Ripop and Sun Moon and Star with that fake patois accent was just silly.

"real collabs" won't happen because it's not his style. He'd rather learn what he can from someone and incorporate their sound into his, executed by him.

Has he ever done a real collab?

IMO, the collabs usually suck too. Everything with Doug E. Fresh was awful. Eve, Q-tip. Ani DiFranco would be cool but you can barely tell how either participates on their respective albums.

I guess Larry Graham & Chaka Khan count as a collab right?

I'm not sure. I mean, I know they're silly when they are
featured as the main tracks on a complete album, but if
they're given up as downloads "Judas Kiss", "Y Should Eye",
I think they're kind of ok.

One of the best recent examples of the difference between
an organic, jazzy Prince composition and a hip-hop NPG tune
is the 'song' "Prince and the Band" which he played at the
celebration where it sounded wonderful, more than 10 mins
of solos, highs and lows, deep grooves and beautiful piano
all done very jazzy and free.

Then he played the same song at "Vega" and did it as one of
those hip-hop tunes, spitting the words over the beat of
"The Return Of The BumpSquad". Which sounded kind of hard
and cool, but also silly at the same time. It was a bit like
*ding* we're back in 1995.

I don't know. For an album release, I'd like the jazz
version but for a single or internet release, I'd like to
have the hip-hop rendition.

Jimmy Cliff?? No offense- but not unless they were planning on making a Weekend At Bernie's 3 soundtrack.

Prince would need to hookup with somebody like Buju Banton. Now THAT would be HOT!

Comparing Buju Banton to Jimmy Cliff is like comparing Lenny Kravitz to Chubby Checker.

So if you don't know who Buju is, now you know.

I'd like to see him write a few tracks for either an up and coming new pop star (much in the britney/chritina vein) or an established one. But I wouldn't like to know it was him. (A new pseudonym is more than due, right?) biggrin

I just wanna see this so that I can stick a big fat middle finger up at all those who doubt that Prince can produce another hit.

Now that I have read what I just wrote, I think that if he done that it would seriously suck! I think nutthinbuttamuffin hit the nail on the head with his suggestion!

Origmnd is right. We should all pay attention to this earlier post and never make additional comments on the subject. Once it is written about online, there should be nothing else to say.

Thanx for pointing that out to us. We needed to be reminded of how this conversation started. Good job.

I think his next new ablum should be a collection of all the b sides (extended versions, unedited) and a couple of songs from the vault reflecting each stage (era) of his music. The only draw back would be that he would have too come to an agreement with Warners.

Perhaps a limited agreement or limited editions. Not going too happen.
