I mean, he's a great rock guitarist, but what an asshole disbelief

fuck it, so what?. He's a total ledgend and at his peak was one of the coolest cats on the planet. Just watched a great interview with him this week in the U.K. and was reminded that in an era of plastic, fake so called pop / rock stars here stands an innovator who deserves his place at the top end of rock history. To deny that on the basis of a quote he did years ago about P is just daft.

According to a band member, James Brown told Bill Withers to his face that he (Bill) couldn't sing, when they were on the way to perform at Rumble In The Jungle. I remember in the mid-1980s that Roland Orzabal said something like (don't remember exact words), "I consider it an insult to be thrown in with Wham! Americans accept them because of their tan and beach shorts image." Boy George called Whitney Houston "a rude cow". John Lennon recorded a song called How Do You Sleep?, in which he called Paul McCartney's songs "Muzak to my ears". Paul replied with Silly Love Songs.

I wonder if there is any artist that can criticize Prince without people here thinking he or she is washed-up, a has-been, or not good at what they do.

Keith Richards is a hell of a guitar player. The same things said against him in this thread are some of the same things said about Prince.

I have a lot of respect for Bill Withers, because when he didn't feel like singing and playing anymore, he stopped and decided to get out of music altogether, except for the licensing part of it. He recorded a couple of songs with Jimmy Buffett, of all people. He took a leave of absence from his day job to tour, but I think he opted not to quit working his job with an aviation company.

Tavis Smiley tried to get him to play a song on the show, but he just smiled and looked at the guitar. His daughter's been recording for a while, and he's shown up at some of her shows and sang with her on a song or two.

Well, Ron Wood obviously doesn't share Keith's opinion as he has jammed with Prince in the past, and stood in awe watching and rocking out to Prince at the Conga Room in L.A. last year. I watched Ron and he was blown away by Prince.

Also, I completely disagree with Keith Richards being one of the best guitarists of all time. The Stones might be Rock Royalty, but in terms of musicianship they have never wowed me. I think Led Zeppelin, for example, are far superior musicians. Keith is a competent guitarist, but I never think of Keith with the top Rock guitarists. He is nowhere near the likes of Jimmy Paige, Brian May, Carlos Santana, Frank Zappa Jimi Hendrix or Prince.

Anyway, this sums up Keith for me.

Keith's talent as a guitarist is better viewed as a songwriting tool than for his technical proficiency or flamboyance. He can create and execute a killer riff, whether it's based on an old blues line or a completely original creation. A lot of his contemporaries that you named didn't really have as great a talent as he did for that. They're better players, but he is (or was) better at creating from his playing.

If that made any sense at all.

It made sense. I am well aware of the difference in composing and playing, which is why I mentioned Keith as a guitarist and his musicianship. I did not mention his songwriting. It's kind of like Wendy and Lisa. A lot of people love them around here for their composition skills. However, as musicians I am not impressed by them. They are competent, with Lisa being more adroit than Wendy, IMHO. The difference between Keith and Prince, however, is that Prince is great at all of the aspects you mentioned. Therefore, Keith needs to put a cap on the haterade. He is not in the same league as Prince.

lol See this is why I'm glad I've grown up with vinyl 'cause you can learn so much from credits and inside jokes/references. P-Funk took a couple shots at Prince, George Duke, and Rick James 'cause as they were comin up they were compared to the baddest band in the land and the brothers of P-Funk bein musicians, they could hear their influence in these new jacks resepective sounds. They called Prince-PRINZ.....Rick James became Trick James....Even Kiss was called Brand X'ers lol

Agree. He's earned the right to say what the hell he likes about his peers anyway. Long in the tooth and he's seen and done it all. Some folks are just overly-sensitive crybabies. "Boo-hoo he's attacking Prince". Well, no. That's just his viewpoint on him. Not everyone is a fan.

He could do cameo in The Mummy, and not need makeup, just a bit of gauze will do. Seriously though I do love the Stones, wish Prince would release concert footage at the rate the Stones have. They also get Scorsese, the Maysles brothers, Jean Luc Godard and other artists to handle the directing.

Yup! I, too, have loved the Stone's music for several decades. Got to see them live in the '90s and it was a major experience with a packed arena. I felt sorry for the opening act, which was Pearl Jam, at the top of their popularity, because the crowd grew restless and started booing and yelling for the Stones! Still, Keith Richard's comment was tasteless and pointless... I have the feeling he must have felt snubbed by Prince at some point... These comments all sound like they have a personal grudge attached. confused

I wasn't really bothered by Keith Richard's criticism (disrespect) of Prince because as great as Keith Richard's was as a member of The Rolling Stone's, you can't take him seriously. At the 2004 Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame he was kissing Prince's ass, praising him and saying great things about him, while Prince was at the ceremony, then years later, you call him an "overated midget". At least when Miles Davis wrote his autobiography if he expressed dislike for your music, he didn't waver, and same as Rick James.

While on Keith Richard's he is the perfect example of how so much ass kissing from the rock press can blow your head up to the point, you think you are God's gift to Rock N Roll. Let's remember in the Chuck Berry film "Long Live The King of Rock N Roll", Chuck Berry chastised him plenty during rehearsals for the gig for not keeping up with tempos, and lagging behind him.

The film was Hail, Hail Rock n Roll and Keith Richards did CHuck a huge favor on that one. Keith Richards IS gods gift to rock n roll. Everything done from The mid 70s on is influenced profoundly by Keith Richards and Co. The Quotes are taken out of context. I've read the book, and by the way, its way better than 21 Nights. Everyone does not have to be a fan. However, everyone is entitled to an opinion. It kills me how people are so quick to defend Keith's opinion, yet label those who have contrary opinions as overly sensitive crybabies. I certainly am not overly sensitive nor am I a crybaby. I am, however, a music fan, and my OPINION is that Keith has a lot of nerve calling Prince overrated, when as far as musicianship is concerned, few bands are as overrated as The Rolling Stones, Keith Richards in particular. Aside from Prince, I listed many guitarists who I think can take Keith to school any night. So, it is not just about Prince for me. I just have problems with people who have a hard time looking in the mirror. Keith and the Stones are legends, but they are overrated as many of the black musicians who they've ripped off copied have stated in private and public.

I don't care if he doesn't care for Prince. I doubt if Prince is losing sleep over Keith Richards' opinions. However, he put his opinion of Prince out there, so I, along with anyone else can chew on it. Some choose to swallow it. I choose to spit it out because to me it is utter rubbish. No harm, no foul. Life goes on.
