McHammer - Pray

Prince must have wanted to KILL HIM for using 'when doves cry' for the song 'Pray' . Does anybody remember what was going on at the time? Prince did not give Hammer permission to use his song, did he? eek

Prince liked Hammer. He gave full permission for "when doves cry" to be sampled. Also, "soft and wet". You must remember, Hammer was a big deal, at the time, looked like he could have a HUGE career. You know, the next Michael Jackson of rap and all that.

Also, the way you typed MC Hammer makes it seems like McLovin's cousin...McHammer.

I could be wrong:

but IIRC this sample was used on Mc Hammer's "Pray" song, right before the laws about sampling of sound bits were made. > Meaning Prince didn't approoved this sample.

Please corect me if I'm wrong. wink

I think you are correct with this one.

The Biz Markie lawsuit occured a year after Hammer's song was released.

That doesn't rule out the possibility of Prince giving him permission to use it but word!

He may not have approved it, but I'm sure he still got paid. Prince recieves credit and Controversy Music is listed under publishing administration notes for "Pray" and "Soft And Wet" (I'll let you guess which song he sampled on that track).

I seem to recall that Hammer got hammered for using the "super freak" sample in "can't touch this" with out clearance. I remember hearing at the time, that the single got pulled from shelves and everything, by the time it was all worked out it was never re-issued. Now I am not sure if that is true by that was the rumor.

And for "she soft and wet" (as it appeared --iirc-- on the cd) it was more than a sample it was more of a remake with significant additions to the lyrics.

Yep, I think you're wrong; Prince was credited as co-composer, I also guess he agreed with the sampling thing; smart move, he made a lot of $ out that Hammer album.

The only legal issue Hammer had was with "U Can't Touch This" because Rick James wasn't credited at first, but they solved the problem later on.

Actually the first sample-related legal issues happened before 1990, I clearly remember "Pump Up The Volume" and the first De La Soul album having some big legal issues.

Prince would have definetly been paid. I remember Rick James saying he wasnt pleased U cant touch this sampled his work but soon changed his mind when the royalty checks started coming in. I think De La Soul were the first rappers to be sued for sampling, I might be wrong but im sure they hardly earned a penny from 3 feet high and rising because of the suit. Which sucks because its the Sgt Peppers of rap albums

I want to say NWA was one of the first groups to be sued for sampling. They have a track that samples the intro guitar to Get Off Your Ass and Jam, albeit at a much lower pitch.

Back on topic...

As I seem to recall it, Hammer's use of WDC was fully sanctioned by Warner Bros. and Prince was none too happy about it. In spite of the FACT, that he DID get PAID!

It was the principle of the matter...you understand? wink

That was way back WHEN...PRINCE...still had principles! shrug

Anyhoo, isn't it kinda pointless to talk about the song...without having the song...present? wink

I just saw this video on tv the other day. They barley showed it back in the day and I would wait and wait for it (only got the orginal video).

I heard Prince talk about it before and it seemed like he was cool with it.

Funny. I think apart from the stuff that his own proteges have recorded, Ginuwine's version of When Doves Cry is the ONLY cover version of a Prince song EVER that's quite listenable.

Don't be surprised; I also bought his albums and they were just good fun.

When I was on my way 2 the Prince concert in '90 (Nude tour) someone on

the bus started 2 sing/shout U can't touch this, wich was on the radio and the whole bus (Prince fans!)joined him!! When Prince returned a few years later with The ActI tour, press said the show was influenced by MC Hammer, because Prince included the rap/dancers....I don't agree totally but maybe there was some truth in their words??

I really liked Here comes the hammer (single mix) confused

In spring 1989,Hammer told MTV that he would be choreographing a Prince video from the forthcoming 'Batman' soundtrack.I guess that Prince approached him to do this, then changed his mind and used another choreographer.

That's no lie. I'm sure P made damn-near a million from the album sales alone. Not to mention, "Pray" and "Soft and Wet" got a lot of air play when the album dropped.
