Nick Cleeg chooses 'The Cross' on Desert Island Discs

Nick Clegg is a big Prince fan and spent a year in Minneapolis where he saw Prince a few times...

"It's hard working people, like Prince, who I want to protect. People on less than $10 million a year... and I want to go further, if he and people of his religious conviction want to set up a faith school, I'm all for it with the pupil premium.

So thank you Prince for the question."

Prince wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth, not like Nick Clogg was. And I'm sure Prince would disagree with his new spending cuts on the more unfortunate people of society. So now hes comparing 'Prince the pop star' with ordinary folks, then saying he wants to protect £10 million a year earners. Nice going ass licker Clogg confused

Umm, I guess I was being a bit too subtle. My 'quote' was made up... you know to be funny? I guess it wasn't. boxed

(opening can of worms...) but why does someone need to believe in a god to enjoy a song?

When I heard it in 1987, i didn't either. And no, Prince didn't convert me. (Larry did. wink )

I voted for him. Was sad when he linked up with dickhead douchebag David Cameron, but this makes up for it.... I guess. LOL

The Cross is a good song but an atheist Prince fan has his whole catalogue to pick from so seems a tad odd to gravitate to the one with the preachy lyrics.

I disagree. I'm an atheist and I love the song, lyrics included. Why wouldn't I? They don't show my beliefs, but I'm mature enough to understand and respect the fact that other people have different beliefs and, in this case, Prince expressed his beautifully (now, fast-forward 20 years and, unfortunatelly, not sure it's always the case with the newer songs...)

I agree its not his worst lyrics for this but lyrics play a part in how we relate to songs and it often feels more inclusive to hear our own experiences echoed back, so we can sing along with reckless abandon. Just seeing it as a little odd to be that one favourite song is all. smile

I guess we just disagree. The lyrics really are not that preachy ( at least not before it became The Christ in '98, right). "Ghettos to the left of us, flowers to the right...a pregnant mother sings, she lives in starvation, her children need all that she brings..."

If anything it's about salvation, and mostly Prince's social commentary and faith.

Regardless, it's a beautiful song whether you believe in Christ or not.
