Allegiance appreciation - Any info? I've been diggin' the song Allegiance alot lately. It's funny, because from the outset, it sounds like an "ugly" song, but it's grown on me... kind of like We Can Funk, or The Question of You.
Any info on the background of this song.
It has elements of many Prince songs. I was just turned onto it, but I underground classic.
It's hard to peg the era it's from... or to whom it was written for.
Any info would be greatly appreciated. I'm really diggin' this tune... after not liking it so much initially.
Love it now! The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

I think it was written for Howard Hewitt if I recall correctly. A friend of mine had that album....early 90s, late 80s. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

1992, album title was also "Allegiance". I like that song a lot. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Wow... never knew. I just found HH's version on YouTube.
It sounds decent, actually.
I thought it was strange of Prince to have a song in which he says "I'm addicted to your junk". lol
I've never envisioned Prince as a liker of "junk". LOL
I like both versions now... but you know... we here at the Org are biased!
I prefer Prince's version... I just wish Prince had released a version of better quality.
I'd also love to know more about this collaboration... like if Prince just gave it to HH, or if he wrote it to give to HH, or what the full story is.
Thanks for the info!! The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

I am not 100% sure, but I'm going to take 'an educated guess' in that it was just a track Prince gave, as opposed to writing it for Hewitt.
Firstly, the released version is re-recorded, i.e. it does not feature Prince as a musician. And secondly, Prince was giving out a lot of individual tracks at this time. The odd track here and there usually signifies that it was submitted to, as opposed to written for. As I say, just a guess, since it wasn't a vault track, and recorded at PP, it could've been written for his album just as easily.

You´re welcome. A lot of the songs from that era are , in my opinion, very good. Also check out Open Book ( for Jevetta Steele ), 1000 Hugs and Kisses ( for Nona Gaye) and I Hear Your Voice ( also for Jevetta Steele). Those early 90s songs are some true gems. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Open Book was one of my FAVES back around that time!! I think I heard it in 92 or 93 for the first time. LOVE that jam. I dno't need to hear Jevetta Steele's version. Prince's version is quality enough for me.
The others you mentioned, I don't know. Maybe I'll look for them.
Thanks!
Oh... and one more song that's kinda mellow that I've been digging lately is U Make My Sun Shine.
Love that tune as well!! The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

A 1000 hugs & kisses was first written for (and recorded by) Rosie Gaines. It's only that the circulating version is sung by Nona.
I hear your voice was given to (and released by) Patti Labelle, not Jevetta Steele.
Can't figure out why the f didn't Martika use Open Book (it was offered to her first).

Ooops, sorry, you´re right about that.Somehow I got Jevetta Steele and Patti Labelle mixed up because there´s an online stream of that bootleg where it is wrongly labeled as "written for Jevetta Steele", and for some reason that got stuck in my head. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

In that case, I've heard the Patti version of that song. I actually remember the Prince version now too.
I don't think I know Hugs and Kisses, but I'm sure I'll come across it.
I love "rare" cuts. I'm addicted to that junk! LOL The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!
