July 6 - 2001 - Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier - Palais des Arts [? about the instrumentals] does anybody know what kind of show this was? i've heard it at a friends place and altho the soundquality was very poor (about the worst quality live boot i've heard since 2000), there were a few fascinating instrumentals played at this show.
iirc there were about 5 long and very cool instrumentals performed, each followed by a regular prince song.
none of the instrumentals contained any song elements i've heard before so they were either new tunes they'd been jamming on or they were off the cuff improvisations?
what with the length of about 10 minutes of at least 3 of those instrumentals, it sounded almost like another madhouse album. the sound, at least to my ears, came closer to the madhouse sound than either news or xpectations.
so does anybody know more about this concert or specifically about the instrumentals? what kind of show was this anyway? was it a one off aftershow kind of gig or was it just a regular show that happened to be very weird and interesting due to all those new and never before performed instrumentals?
here's the tracklisting:
drum solo instrumental # 1 the ballad of dorothy parker/four instrumental # 2 eye'magettin' instrumental # 3 girls and boys instrumental # 4 forever in my life / a case of u instrumental # 5
after this, a pretty regular show was performed at the same venue.
intro uptown controversy let's work the work prt 1 cream little red corvette i wanna be your lover sexy dancer housequake the ballad of dorothy parker i could never take the place of your man do me, baby scandalous diamonds and pearls the beautiful ones nothing compares 2 u outro
so was the first setlist a soundcheck? or like an opening act? i think that larry graham was on stage for all of those instrumentals. but it's not really a gcs set by any means.
i'm confused

This was Prince's headlining performance at the Montreal International Jazz Festival in Canada. He performed 2 sets on the same night. The first set was the "jazz" set that you described. The second set was a more conventional effort that was a shortened version of the Hit n Run tour setlist. Parts of the "jazz" set were rehearsed, but the majority of the performance was improvised. Hope this helps?

Forgot to mention, Larry was on stage for the first set, in fact, Larry wandered into the audience a couple of times during the show, while still playing bass.

You are welcome. A soundboard or exellent audience recording of this show would be fantastic, i love him doing "jazz."

me too. that first portion of the show is just so laid back. love the slowed down versions of girls and boys and forever in my life too.
soundboard of that show would be:

I would prefer releases like this (in good quality) and the new 4DF release than a 20TEN Deluxe any day of the week. [Edited 11/7/10 12:56pm]

It was the first time Prince played at a jazzfest, and the only one he really attempted to play an alternative tracklist (at list on the first part).
Wish this were circulating complete and in listenable quality.
