Wow, I slept on Lavaux i'm still enjoying 20Ten. Lavaux was not very memorable to me on the first few listens, but now, i'm enjoying it. someone posted that they'd like to see an ext'd version and i was like ughh, but now i'm understanding why some liked it immediately (Sea of Everything is the track staying stuck in my head esp. since i had to stop playing Laydown, Beginning Endlessly and Sticky Like Glue so much). heck even Compassion has grown on me a bit [Edited 10/2/10 19:02pm]

I just listened to 20ten yesterday. I don't dislike Lavaux, but it's still not a favorite. A lot of the people who are giving this album a chance seem to really like it, though.

I like Lavaux because it's not as long as Beginning Endlessly, lol. I think Beginning Endlessly is about 2.5 mins too long and needs to be trimmed. Lavaux is at just the right amount of time before it becomes annoyingly repetitive.
Act of God is also a great one, not the least of which is due to the editing.

I don't mind a longer song if I'm enjoying the groove. Beginning Endlessly definitely isn't annoying me, yet! There was more than one song on MPLSound that got on my dang nerves, though. I still can't get past the words to Act Of God. Leaves me all

Now I love it and can't stop singing it. It took a 2nd time to listen, but since then, I've been hooked and can't stop playing it! Lol Overall, 20ten is FAST becoming one of my fave Prince cds, the more I listen, the more its approaching my top 5. Song for song, it pleases my ears. I feel about it the way I feel about For You...can't hate any song! Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

lol, Well I get why people would be turned off by the title, but I think he's using it ironically and not like... Religiously.

Yea, you're probaby right - but I think I'm alone on this one, but I find "Act of God" so incredibally cheesy and boring that I cringe when I hear the opening cheese itntro and rush to skip ASAP. It's just so boring. At least similar songs, like Dear Mr. Man had a funky groove. this one is just bland. "I got news for ya, freedom aint free...... tax dollars something something from saddam" - what? The GOP wouldn't even use this for their bland ass intros to candidates. But again, I recognize most people here love this song!

The GOP wouldn't use it as an intro because the lyrics lambaste the GOP for their involvement in the war.
"Tax dollars build a plane, drop a bomb Supposedly to keep us all safe from Saddam Bringin' bad news to another war mom Call it an act of god"
This is a pretty clever lyric considering George W Bush had once stated his inspiration for the war was god.
There's also a killer groove underneath the tightly produced vocals. You can hear it at the end of the song where the weird synths are bubbling and popping under that hook-y guitar riff.
Edit: I also love his delivery on the verse after that -
"Funny how nobody's holy books are the same Everybody's god got a different name"
The juxtaposition of his vocals and the backing vocals are really quirky/funky here. [Edited 10/3/10 13:24pm]

I just find the lyrics convoluted, contradictory and confusing. I think he's trying to be ironic, saying that everybody blames everything on god, but it's really our own damn fault. But I'm not sure because the lyrics are kind of a mess. Whatever, it distracts me enough that I don't enjoy the song.

Oh come on, you are sure, you just detailed it out right there without anyone having to pre-empt you! But it's all good, not everyone can appreciate the same stuff.
However, I'm gonna be over here sharpening my daggers with LadyChel and Daphne and Tame. Watch your back.

Nah man, I said I think that's what he's trying to do, but I find it confusing.

+1 We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Have just been reading up on Charlie Chaplin - for something completely unrelated. The man who gave us this speech:
"I should like to help everyone if possible, Jew, gentile, black man, white. We all want to help one another, human beings are like that. We all want to live by each other's happiness, not by each other's misery. We don't want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone and the earth is rich and can provide for everyone."
Forced into exile by the FBI and the American Government. He went to live in Vavey/Lavaux.
Listen to the Prince lyrics again with that information in mind:
"Revolution time has come today
Or maybe I'm giving him too much credit
