C-NOTE(Which was your fave instrumental?) I liked Nagoya & Empty room best, & why did he start making instrumental albums like N.E.W.S ,C-NOTE, & Xpectation?

Empty Room?
Negative possible answer: He released NEWS, C-note & Xpectation so that when he finally could be bothered releasing a half arsed collection of songs with lyrics, it could be hailed as a comeback.
Positive possible answer: He wanted to experiment musically.
blah blah blah | |

C-note, Expectation and N.E.W.S are not a new idea. Prince has been making instrumental music his entire career. The two Madhouse albums 8 & 16 were released in the 80's. So C-Note etc were not the first. I prefer Expectation and N.E.W.S over C-Note, but it is nice collection of jams. I don't really have a favourite, but I think that Empty Room should have been left off this album/e.p. I think he could have easily found another instrumental to replace the song, it's out of place.

Relistening to this album yesterday I have to say empty room is the stand out. But as far as the instrumentals go I have to give it to Tokyo - it's the one that stuck in my head the longest. "I'm not human I'm a dove, I'm ur conscience. I am love"

The version of EmptyRoom from the Montreaux boot (i think it's 09) is possibly the best version ive heard. Altho the original studio version, which i had but lost a few years back,is equal 1st for me. www.riotcitywrestling.com

What about Nagoya? | |

Nagoya is definitely the jam. I went ONA crazy that year and ended up catching shows in DC, Minneapolis, London, Osaka, Nagoya and Vegas. I was lucky enough to have been there for that soundcheck recording. I regard it as a special souvenir of a crazy, fantastic experience.

Check this out!!!:
Prince disappeared into another room for a costume change as the house band – complete with four piece horn section -- laid down a greasy funk groove. Five minutes later, Prince re-appeared, wearing a signature form-fitting purple spandex jumpsuit. He strapped on a white, custom-made Stratocaster, and broke out several bars of vintage Johnny “Guitar” Watson, thus kicking off a non-stop funk-a-thon that, as of this writing, is heading into its 27th straight hour.

ooh, that's a hard choice, they're all great. for me, "empty room" sticks out like a sore thumb.
it's not the definitive version of that song and it seems very much out of place on this album/ep which is otherwise completely instrumental and very much 'in the moment'.
if i had to choose tho, i'd go for the back 2 back "osaka" and "tokyo" sonic bliss. that's just one cool sequence. love the way they flow into each other by means of the ethereal/jungle/rainish sounds. and they're both just exquisite jams.
i wouldn't mind if he released something like this every year

One of the longest released Prince tracks was The War. This from princevault.com..... "The track was recorded live at Paisley Park Studio, Chanhassen, MN, USA on 20 June, 1998, am at a concert dubbed "The One". The War was the final track played, and lasted for 45 minutes. Even in its edited form, The War is 26:00, and holds the distinction of the longest released track by Prince and/or related artists."
The full length version of America is not far behind at 20+ mins.
