Prince and Synth Pop Would you like if Prince makes a Synth Pop album with lots of synths and New Wave influence. I think it would be great althought the only Synth pop song he did was Something in the Water

You could easily call "Compassion" and "Lauvaux" synth pop.

Let's Pretend We're Married Delirious
Isn't most of the 1999 album synthpop? or is that synth-funk?
I can't get these genres straight.

Here's the problem:
Synth Pop (like most musical genres) is simply a categorization based on sameness. Meaning, it's a box/label. Right off the bat in this topic (the 3rd post in) someone is telling someone else what synth pop is or isn't. Basically, it's bullshit.
If there are such rigid rules/form expectations about what a genre (like synth pop) is, it's contrived. Good artists don't make art that way. Prince usually doesn't.
Lastly, synth pop is the 21st century regurgitation of 80's New Wave. Listen to 2:06 onwards of "onedayi'mgonnabesomebody" by the Time.
Enough said. [Edited 10/23/10 20:46pm] "New Power slide...."

I forgot about Let's prettend We're maried,it is synth pop while 1999 is Synth funk or ellectro funk album. Synth pop is pop music with synth as the main instrument and new wave influance.
I agree that parts of the song Compassion (especially instrumental parts) are synth pop.

I did have it shipped over from a nice person in England. I like it a lot, it's a step in the right (backwards) direction

I'd say "Beginning Endlessly" had a total 80's synth vibe, and in a more dark epic type of flavor rather then bubble gum. Kind of like when dramatic rock bands started using a lot of synth in the late 70's and early 80's.
But what is the contemporary definition of "synth pop"?

The whole synth/"enter sub-genre" thing is pretty easy, really.
Just take one old genre of subgenre (pop, funk, rock&roll), etc, and replace the traditional/organic instrumentation (of the 50s, 60s and 70s) with synths and drum machines.
Easy, really...
Delirious is perhaps his clearest example of synth-pop...
Girl, Teacher Teacher, Neon Telephone, Baby Go-Go, Everybody Loves Me, No More Candy 4 U, etc.

Delirious is rock and roll, not pop, on a drum computer and a synth. It's not synth pop nor is it new wave nor any other bullshit lable people come up with.
It's simply, arguably the best rock and roll based tune he has ever made. It doesn't necessarily have to be played with synths to sound good, as he has shown many times live. Shit he still plays it live.
But I don't see him play Compassion, Beginning endlessly or Laveau live.
Anyway, 1999 isn't just synth pop or new wave either. You can't really define it as every real Prince fan should know. It's simply Prince showing off his musical genius by mixing all sort of blends and styles of music and playing it with synths, drum computers, bass, guitar and vocals on some of the best songs he has ever written.

Maybe the live drums disqualify it, but I'd call Gotta Stop (Messin' About) his foremost synthpop tune. Or failing that, his foremost new wave tune.
It's all in the attitude.

Prince must have listened to Devo in the late 70s-early 80s. Devo was kind of the blueprint for a rock band using synths as instruments, not because they didn't know how to play, but because it was new and innovative. Created a unique sound. Devo, like Prince, rocked and rocked hard using synthesizers. 1999 is a great synth-pop album by Prince that shows Devo's influence. Stand at the crossroads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths...(Jeremiah 6:16) www.ancientfaithradio.com

Good call. Freedom of Choice was the first cassette I ever had, and I distinctly remember thinking, upon hearing the synth-bass line at the beginning of 'Sexuality': "hey... Devo!"
