After making music for nearly 30 years Prince stepped up to the microphone and was getting ready to accept the 2007 NAACP Image award for Outstanding Male Artist at Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

Dressed in an androgynous, high collared, black-and-white, Asia inspired outfit, Prince Is an artist who defies expectations in his dress as well as in his music. A mix of funk, rock and soul, it’s impossible to pigeonhole the singer, songwriter, musician and actor. With his cross-genre appeal Prince has produced ten platinum albums and thirty “Top 40” singles so far in his career.

He stood quietly on stage with a slight smile on his face waiting for the applause to end at the NAACP awards. If the audience was any indicator, the 48-year-old, 5’2” musical prodigy’s sound was as relevant as ever.

Prince finally raised his hands to quiet the audience and began to speak. He spoke to the power of music and requested those in the business side of the music industry let artists control the direction of their music in the 21st. century.

“I would just challenge the phone companies and the new digital providers to allow us---to steward the new jazz renaissance, hip-hop, soul (into) the 21st century rather than the accountants and the lawyers who’ve ruined the music industry,” he said.

No surprise. Prince is an artist who controlled his own work from the beginning. When he ran into roadblocks with record companies he went out on his own searching for alternative ways to reach his audience. Prince has been compared to Jackie Wilson and James Brown but his style is uniquely his own.

“I listened to all kinds of music when I was young,” he said. “…I always said that one day I would play all kinds of music and not be judged for the color of my skin but the quality of my work, and hopefully I will continue.”

Prince came up with a film project titled “Purple Rain” in the ‘80s. The rags-to-riches story closely resembled his own life and he starred in the movie as “The Kid.” Prince also wrote all the pop-orientated songs on the soundtrack, some with the help of “The Revolution” band members. When the film was released in the summer of 1984 “Purple Rain” garnered $70 million in ticket sales.

The album sold over 13 million copies and was number one on the charts for 24 weeks. Prince also earned an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2004.

The “Purple Rain” film and album made Prince a pop culture legend. Called the best album in rock history, the title song is a signature one for Prince. He performs it at almost every concert.

On June 24 & 25 a selection of Prince memorabilia went on the block at Julien’s Auctions, in its Music Icons sale held at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. Prince’s handwritten lyrics for the song “Purple Rain;” two pages; sold for $67,650. eek eek eek

With regard to collecting rock memorabilia, the most valuable items will be those closely associated with the career of an artist. Documents that relate directly to that artist’s career will generally have more value than personal documents. Handwritten lyrics are some of the most desirable items.

Here are some current values for other Prince lots sold.

Amazing. I would love to have a handwritten song by P. I'm suprised he sold the stuff. I believe "Purple Rain" should have sold for a lot more. It's a shame the Org doesn't get wind of these auctions before others do.

My first question would be - "what are the lyrics to the verse omitted from the album"?

Actually - does anybody know the answer to this??

question

Probably the shitty lyrics from the version at First Avenue that yielded the album tracks. I can watch the DVD later and write them down for you. It's about as meaningless as the rest of the song, but less good.

Oh okay, so now it's the lawyers and the accountants who ruined the music industry.

“I listened to all kinds of music when I was young,” he said. “…I always said that one day I would play all kinds of music and not be judged for the color of my skin but the quality of my work, and hopefully I will continue.”

And judged by the quality of his music, not the color of his skin, he is.

Prince knows, plays and has touched a lot of musical styles so far, but it is mostly a mixture of pop/rock/funk/soul/r&b what he releases. While that is his trademark that has made him the great artist that he is, he has also been repeating himself in doing that.

Yet there are many kinds of music out there in this big beautiful world that Prince has never touched before. Prince has let some latin music touch songs before, but scarcely and never any original African music. No Asian music either.

Prince could step out of the world he has been making music in tho', for a while, and travel the world. He could play with musicians from South Africa for example and get inspired by the richnesses of their music. He could help them out and teach them a few tricks too. He could see how they do it. He could dot he same in Nairobi, Kenya. He could visit the slams there and make music with the kids. Experience with his own eyes how happy they can still be. He could write songs about his experiences. He could go to India and China and learn completely different ways of making music. Different scales, different instruments, different sounds, different ways of thinking. Get inspired by the beauty of the world and the vast variety of cultural differences wherever he goes. Finally get to talk to people freely, to people that don't want anything from him, who are not yes men, who do not immediately view him as that big superstar and say they love everything he does when they really don't. He could go wherever he wants to. He could go to Andalucia, Spain and come back as a flamenco guitar player and dancer or he could travel the entire of South America and come back with the tango and the rumba, with stories of indigenous peoples he met and with pictures of all the beautiful places he has been to.

There is so much to do and see in this world. So much to experience, so much to learn, so much to be inspired by. It's all there.

Okay okay, lets not get carried away.

Let's let the man play whatever the hell he wants to play. We don't have to like, we can say it sucks if we want to, that's on us and our own appreciation and perspective. But lets not go overboard suggesting what he should and shouldn't enjoy playing or doing. lol

Damn, poor Prince. It must be like having thousands upon thousands of mother-in-laws yapping at him for every move the dude makes. lol
