Outtakes that hit you years later? For whatever reason, some of those outtakes I have collected over the years get overlooked. Typically, either I just always assumed something was of poor quality due to the surrounding material or sometimes I just forgot the track was in my possession and never cared much to seek it out anyway. Eventually, I re-discover them and I remember what it feels like to find new outtakes/leaks.
What are some of yours? Why did you just pick it up and what do you like about it?
Mine:
1) U: Never cared much of any of the stuff from The Rebels' session and the Paula Abdul stuff was just so-so, so I never got around to listening to this 1987 version for years after I had it. It has a cool beat that gives you a glimpse into the style he was toying around with that ended up on Graffiti Bridge/Batman/Lovesexy. The lyrics are simple and pleasant and I actually wouldn't have minded seeing this pop up on an album in place of, say, "Tick Tick Bang" or "The Future".
2) Big Tall Wall: Had this playing in the background when I first picked it up years ago and it didn't stick with me. I picked it up on the Dreams boot from years ago. Either Dreams or something that had come out around that time. Anyway, it wasn't until years later when I would read here on the Org about people raving over the song that picked it back up and it is now definitely among my favorites.

Don't Say U Love Me: I heard it years ago but didn't think much of it. Recently I've been enjoying it mainly for Prince's vocal work on it.

I'm a big fan of Prince's instrumental work, and i was aware of the Loring Park instrumentals for a while but always seemed to concentrate on Madhouse stuff and other recordings, i had listened to the Loring Park material and liked it, but never really concentrated on it properly till earlier this year. My friends do not understand my liking of these so i tend to keep these 8 instrumentals for my private headphone listening time.

I am going to add The Grand Progression, again, i liked this song in the past, but i think it is now probably my most listened to outtake this year. I think my neighbours are probably sick of hearing this track of a Sunday morning. It's a great Sunday song.

Poor Little Bastard is another that i tended to overlook in the past. I play it often now. Another good Sunday song.

IS Gotta Stop Messin' About an outtake?
If it is, well it knocks me on my ass everytime I hear it. Love it.
And Feel You Up! I love a Man who:

Outtakes would be songs that didn't make an album or official release. Outtake is also a term for bootleg, etc but when you think bootleg, you think complete bootleg album.

I'm familiar with the org, but my account is very new. I've been looking for a chance to ask about unreleased material. Been wondering what would be recommended, or a direction to head in. I looked into The Work, but I had to wipe my hardrive unfortunately. Lost all my Prince music, it was a sad day. Anyways, any suggestions from ya'll would be much appreciated.

Rebirth of the flesh I finally found it 2 years ago, it reminds me of the great b-sides and 12' from the 80's. I love his hits and albums but I could listen 4 hours 2 these kind of crazy tracks with all the vocals,grooves,guitar/horns... Friends called me a freak but I just love this!!
Schoolyard was a dissapointment, wanted 2 hear this since the 80's but when I finally heard it.... Love4oneanother

Surprisingly, it was THE P, which was recorded with Tevin Campbell. I didn't realize it was more fun than I remembered. It isn't a deep song by any measure, but for some reason, Prince sounds like he was smiling during parts of it and I miss those days when you could tell Prince was having fun in the studio (his talk in Vibrator, Don't Hang Up, etc. are examples of this). The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. If it's outtakes you are after, the new daddy on the block is Work It 2.0, not The Work. Work It 2.0 is updated with the best available outtakes and is also in chronological order, which is nice. It is in 8 volumes with 34 (if i remember correctly) cd's. Also, 30 Years Of Unreleased Funk is another essential must have, some very good quality recordings on that one. In 3 volumes, 8 cd's. 4DaFunk's 4 cd set Playtime is good for songs which have not been released and no studio version is known to exist or is not in circulation. As far as outtakes are concerned you would be pretty much sorted with these 3 releases.
You could also add stuff like Sabotage's Past Present & Future II, Emancipation-The Secret Chapter, The Inner Sanctum, Apotheosis etc etc. These will give you more outtakes including NPGMC stuff that was download only etc.

I need to gt the new Works, i got most my stuff from Ivaults.
My tracks would b U the 1987 version, i thought it was a cheesy at 1st, very psuedo acid housish, it grew on me.
I like Bliss also i could imagine that on Batman, as a Vikki Vale track instead of Lemon Crush

Susie Lovelace (1983/1984) I didn't like the scratchy muffled sound, but now it makes it feel like xxx music, and it works

Pretty much all of them, actually. I hadn't heard anything 'til a few years ago. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Even though it was officially released on 'the Crystal Ball(?)
Power Fantastic(intro) Power Fantastic as a Dream Factory era outtake hit me like a tidal wave, that song made even me have regrets for what could have been I had so many emotions this songs stirred in me

Dance With the Devil. Always heard about this one. Can't believe I never listened to it until this year. When i did hear it, I was just like.. Wow!
Should have been on the Batman soundtrack in some form. From what I understand, it did not make the cut because of it's time. Even a shorter version would have worked imo.

Yup - Work It 2.0 is the thing to have. And, yes - it's 34 CDs.
I have to say, some of what's on there - while a completist's wet dream - is of limited value to most folks. I mean...do I really need :03 of Prince playing a single beat on a snare? We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

not really an outtake, but I completely missed the brilliance of Pink Cashmere when the Hits came out and didn't really discover it until I saw Girl 6. I'm not even sure I realized I even had the song at the time. Now it's one of my very favorite Prince songs.
