Really, IMO, this whole discussion just goes to show how difficult it is these days for Prince to craft an album that would please the majority of his fans. His fan base surely spans such a broad slice of music listeners/appreciators/celebrity followers that at this point in his career it is unlikely he could satisfy everybody with just one release...If his goal in making albums at this point is in part to please his fans it seems to me he's got a tough row to till.

...

I personally think it's an amazing legacy for Prince to illicit such strong responses on his music this many yrs into his career. I hope he keeps reaching to satisfy his own inner voice and not mine. But I recognize it must be tough for him to do so, especially at this point when he's got fewer fans and the music business is so s***y all around. This is a business and he ain't too far gone to see that yet...

Sorry for the edit, jilljones!

...and sorry for skipping everyone elses' subsequent remarks.

The way I see it, is that the guy can release an album a year and take the overly-critical slaps from the fanatics on this world renouned Prince site (or otherwise...), or he can compile the best songs he sees fit every 4 or 5 years. In that latter perspective, those "lame/pedestrian/lazy" songs would be sought after, praised and traded as outtakes.

'20ten' is a great Prince album, imho. I would imagine that he likes to have fun, too. He lives, breathes and shits music. Let him get it all out! Sometimes it might stink to you, but sometimes it smells interesting!

...and to those who dislike "Everybody Loves Me": my immediate reaction was that it would fit perfectly at a kid's birthday party. Why not?!!

Of course, the fact is that even if he were to compile a new album every 4 or 5 years, the resulting release wouldn't be any better, on average, than the ones we're getting every year now. Everything is more or less mediocre.

Its good because its just quality music. Have you turned on the radio lately. Music in my opinion has went to SHIT. I like some of whats out now but I mean come on. Everything sounds the exact same. One club banger after another. I can't get enough of Compassion, Future Soul Song, and Lay Down. I listen to these three on repeat. Beginning Endlessly is also a favorite. Everybody loves me is a cool pop song. Sticky Like Glue just is . It sticks to eardrums and mutates into ecstasy. I just hope he does these songs live instead of Lets Go Crazy and Delirious.

that really depends on what radio stations you listen to. It's all to easy to slam modern day music, but if you don't want to be 'spoon fed' by the commercial stations, dig a little deeper and you'll be suprised at what you'll find.

Do people REALLY just listen to the "radio"? There are SO many alternative sources of REALLY GREAT music online. I guess people don't want to work for it but have it handed to them?? If you get around a bit you would be less impressed by what Prince is churning out now. It's a shame imo because he clearly has the talent (always has) but needs to get together with some other musicians he respects (are there any that aren't older than him?) and try working WITH instead of controlling the situation. That is If he cares about progressing. He certainly doesn't have to.

Oh I have dug and dug. I have spent a lot of money on downloads and cd's. Prince is the only music right now I am really in to. I like LCD SoundSystem, Bassment Jaxx, and some other current music.I really like Janelle Monae a lot. I saw her open for Badu in June. Over all I just feel this is a slow era for music. I like GaGa's music to but its just so overplayed.

Gotta agree with this.

His output is pretty sporadic.

The only good thing about the WB era, was that they kinda had him on a leash. And controlled his output.

Prince has made and continues to make a lot of crap, I think this has been said time and time again.

If Prince had a great editor, his output would be so much better.

I'm not talking about the quality. I'm talking about the technical side. There are at least two tracks on SOTT that sound the way they do because of huge technical flaws. There's evidence all over his records that he is not a perfectionist. It's astounding how awful some of his recent releases sound.

I've heard alotta folks say they wish Prince woulda had a better editor (ie a producer) since the WB years, and there may be something to that. I would argue that the main thing Prince has lost over the years is his once impeccable instinct for what makes a great record, great. However, IMO most of his post TGE albums could have been loads more listenable (or tolerable as the case may be) simply with better mixes. IMHO it's just a travesty for an artist of his stature to put out records that sound as bad as the vast majority of his post WB albums. I agree it has long been clear that the notion Prince was/is a perfectionist, tech-head, gear junkie was just another element of his mythology.

When LotusFlow3r came out I did an A-B test for a friend: First, I played a bit of "Boom" and then a bit of "I Wanna Be Your Lover". And there was just no comparison. IWBYL, 30yrs on, is still a MASSIVE sounding record, fatdrums (for the time) way up in the mix. While "Boom" is just a mess of a mix IMHO, and tiny sounding in comparison. And for a cat like Prince there's just no justifiable excuse for it. I'm not comparing the quality of the sONgs; just how they sound, that is, how they are presented to us, the record buying public.

Although 20TEN still isn't a stellar sounding album by any stretch, for me the mixes are better balanced than most of all of his post WB albums; its almost as if he decided to go retro not only with the songwriting but with the whole production/mix approach as well.

There really is no excuse for bad guitar sounds, terrible drum sounds, awful mixes and DI'd acoustic guitar. The saving grace of his songwriting going down the toilet could be if the records sounded great ... but they sound terrible !!

The idea of Prince being a 'musical genius' is such a joke in 2010.

Femi Jiya was probably the best person Prince has worked with in recent years (and didn't he fire him in the end?), Femi was not ground breaking with his mixes but at least knew how to mix live instruments. If you listen to the Rainbow Children you can hear the tracks Femi didnt mix because they sound awful (Sensual Everafter).

Agreed...

It had gotten so bad the past few years I wondered if perhaps Prince has severely degraded hearing. Like maybe all those years of loud amplifiers have hollowed out the frequencies he can hear accurately. Which, by and large, happens to many of us sooner or later. But if you're a control freak who doesn't trust your engineer (or anyone else) to tell you what sounds good or not...well, its sorta like a blind person putting on makeup...

No, I think Bart is specifically referring to the technical flaws with Forever In My Life (or maybe he means another one) and If I Was Your Girlfriend. They only sound as they do because of mistakes made during the recording process that Prince did not go back and "fix"...

Planet Earth, the opposite... i view it more harshly now then at the time of its release.

you have the same views as me again,mate....20ten is a fine album...nothing great but solid....lotusflower single disc is his best album in the last ten years for me....planet earth not aging well apart from a couple of tracks...

Prince is a perfectionist, one thing he has done with all his albums, at times to a fault, is to go completely out of his way to make each album sound different than the next, to the point of paranoia at times. it's my opinion that in his mind repeating himself is a loss of creativity. Eventually there has to be a breaking point where you just have to repeat yourself. For most artists, that is pretty much every single album regardless of how much they try not to, for Prince, it's been what, decades for the most part? With a few exceptions of course here and there.

20TEN to me is the most Prince sounding record in a long long time, in order to accomplish this I truly feel he resigned to the fact that it is ok to repeat yourself, especially if the quality is high. I listen to this album, I hear the controversy, dirty mind, 1999 and purple rain albums all meshed into one. He whipped out the old sounds for this one and stayed true to the Minneapolis sound. One of my favorite records of his in years.

A fair amount of 20Tens tracks have sneaked into my (recently purchased) Ipods top25 most played. That says something. I'm fairly dismissive of Prince's studio work in the last few years, but with 20Ten, I said at it's release i liked it, and i'll stand by my opinion of it being a return to form. Of sorts.

after sitting with it for awhile, I think it's clearly a return to form sonically. But the songs, apart from that Sticky/Lavaux/AOG trilogy, just don't really cut it.
