Diamonds and Pearls era was the worst Yes there are classics on Diamonds and Pearls album but half of album was ruined by rapping. also live tour in a lot of concert time instead of Prince ther was this annoying rapper Toney M. How did you fans feel during that era? ,did the addition of rap to his sound bother you?

I still think Chaos and Disorder is the worst of the worst, But I still haven't listened to 20ten yet I am a Rail Road, Track Abandoned

I like the album, I like the era, I liked Prince's style, I like Diamond and Pearl, I liked the tour, I like his confidence .. I LOVE the D&P video ... liked the whole era.
Symbol is n°1 and D&P is n°2 and then come the 80s!

this album is pretty much a hit or a miss for me, but d and p, gett off and cream are three classics so i like it overall

This whole album is a major classic and one if his best works IMO. Unlike a lot of people I love Daddy Pop and Jughead plus all the interludes and rapping. Albums out around the same time were Marky Mark & the Funky Bunch-music for the people and MJ's Dangerous which both also sound dated. I love the early 90's sound and as the years go by it just sounds better to my ears. Not a single duff track! "Still Crazy 4 Coco Rock"

Love Diamonds and Pearls!! The ablum itself is a classic in Prince's career and really was relevant for the times. The songs still sound really cool too, this ablum got alot of play when it came out in my household, especially the title track. I like almost every song on the ablum, minus 1 or 2. And the "look" during this time was great, definately one of his most memorable!! Great addition to the Prince legacy IMO!! Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

The album is really good me thinks!..i should know cos it was the only cassette tape i had in my oldford fiesta when i did a tour of Scotland. Played it until it literally broke and spat it back out.

Daddy Pop, Jughead and Push stink, but the rest of the album features some of the best mainstream pop/rock/funk of the early 90s; I still think that Money Don't Matter 2Night is the "What's Goin' On" of the 90s,... on top of that, Michael B organic/hard-hitting drumming is the key of the album.
Overall D&P is much tighter than GB and more interesting than Batman; LoveSymbol was a much better album anyway, even without singles as as good as Cream or Gett Off...
and I don't understand why so many people "hate" Tony M; he's distracting, yeah, and his raps didn't suit Prince music until LoveSymbol, but hell, he's no better or worse than any mainstream rapper of the 90s or the 00s...leave the man alone... [Edited 10/6/10 2:46am]

No album and no era brought me such a big disappointment as his post ONA output. He died for me (artistically). Period.

How dare you state something like this. Why be so negative? Can't you see the path of evolvement? Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

In no way, shape or form is it the worst. Love the symbol album and D&P.
Probably 88-90 and 97-00 were the worst.

Of course, Tony M and the "Game Boyz" bugged the crap out of me. That doesn't change the fact that both of those albums were still VERY good in my eyes, and that first appearance that they did on the Arsenio Hall show for D&P was KILLER.
for me the bad years started with TGE. http://www.facebook.com/p...111?ref=ts

I have so many great memories of that era. The tour was fucking brilliant, I had so much fun. The tickets are still hanging on the wall behind my pc monitor and put a smile on my face everytime I look at them.

For me, it definitely marked the end of the classic Prince sound, and more of him attempting to do what was "cool" at the time.
/still trying to figure out what "clockin' the jizz" means...

I do have to admit that after years of him slamming rap and hip hop, to see him add rap as an element of his music was kind of a dick move. http://www.facebook.com/p...111?ref=ts

a) what is the classic prince sound? b) did ya miss the continuing evolvement? c) does stuff have to mean something to be appreciatable? d) are you the last to find out? Great album - great era. D & P definetely has a pop sound but it was Prince's pop sound and you could not here it anywhere else at the time. The first we got to hear from the album was Get Off, which I think is one of Prince's funkiest Club track, it's rigth up there with songs like D.M.S.R. and Erotic city.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Hated it. Still do. Gett Off is the only song I can deal with, and I don't even like it all that much. I thought the rapping sucked. I don't dislike rap/hip-hop, I like it. I just thought the rappers he had on the album were pathetic. He should have had Ice Cube. I'm just saying...

a.) To my ears, there is a clear separation between his 80s and 90s sound. It seemed that he decided to abandon the "Minneapolis Sound" and just do straight ahead pop-dance music. That's neither good nor bad - it just is. b.) Not sure how to answer that. c.) Nope! d.) Always.
Diamonds & Pearls was the first step of the second phase of his career. Dude was in his early 30s, I think Graffiti Bridge was him cleaning out the Vault of what he considered gems, closing the door on the first phase.
I loved it when it came out, but it's definitely on my "least listened to" list nowadays. It's only saving grace is Prince hadn't discovered "Segues" yet, which doomed most of his mid-90s stuff.
