What's so "new" about the New Power Generation anyway? NEW Power Generation...??
It was great back in '92 with Rosie and crew, and I liked it in 1994-95 with the funkiest band on the planet...but now the "new" in NPG has gotten old. It's an entirely different band, a different style of music...a different groove. Prince drop the name and come up with something NEW... What do you think? What if he dropped all of them and was just plain Prince again?
I think that would make me happy!

Interesting that the original meaning of "The New Power Generation" in Lovesexy means something very different than the two albums put out by The New Power Generation: Gold Nigga & Exodus.

That or come up with a new band name. I like the idea of the band members getting recognition as they are all excellent musicians.
I think that would make me happy! Most people didn't refer to the SOTT/Lovesexy band as the "Madhouse" band they were called at one point--even though they werent all collaborators on the Madhouse albums, and most still don't to this day. (edit: I remember back in 88 hearing a radio station giveaway albums if you new the correct name of his backup band) [This message was edited Tue Jan 28 11:06:25 PST 2003 by XNY] "Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion" -- Martha Graham

IMHO "New Power" is the key phrase here. Both words are adjectives not just the "New"
as in "New Power, New Power, lay it on me..." New Power Soul New Power People New Power Generation. Maybe Prince still believes in this idea of a New Power. Hence the name has remained. I have seen a couple of Nelson George (music critic) interviews where he also ridicules (and misinterprets IMO) the band name. Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.

You can't give them a name the former Revolution has a stamp on...Wendy, Lisa, Brownmar, Bobby Z, Dr Fink. They're legendary. I'm going to think about a new name and get back to you: it's gotta be catchy but also definitive. The new band is much more jazzy than any previous one(aside from the Madhouse projects, of course). SO TRUE! Funny, I was thinking about the "New Power Generation" I think, that it just sounds a little dated . Since it's not really "new". I agree. You know, back when the New Power Generation or the NEWPOWERSOUL=>, or ANY "New Power" idea came to fruition with Lovesexy, it was thought of a positive, self empowerment, self improvement, Love of God, Love of sex etc. Just positive stuff. And in 1990 when he first named his band the New Power Generation, it still felt fresh and like he was continuing that spirit. BUT when the Diamonds And Pearls came out and he started mixing it with Rap and with "Ganster" Glam, I was slightly dissapointed. When Prince named the NPG album "New Power Soul" and the feeling and concept of the album had nothing to do with what the Lovesexy feel and concept, it was seriously dissapointing. In fact, for me persoanlly, I just have not been moved to even buy that album USED! Ugh. It just didn't feel right mixing that in with bling-bling and gansters and Rap. I can understand how maybe it was used to unite all kinds of people through music, so maybe that's why he mixed in with that stuff. In a way though, and in contrast, it's kind of cool that Prince has kept the New Power concept thing from way back in those classic era's. It connects things like a bridge of sorts. Furthermore, it also feels like there have been new events in Prince's interests, like fighting record companies, internet self-promotion and going solo, you know, no major record company to support him, and that inspiring artists to em-POWER themselves with this NEW way of owning or presenting your art, etc. BUT! BUT, I think it does NOT fit the new band. I still also feel it's dated and nothing NEW about the POWER. Unless, it's thought of a NEW band...?

Just throwing out some random ideas:
Prince and his Court (vh1-circa '90)--got a jazzy sound to it, me thinks. Prince and his Majesty's Finest Prince and Knights of the Round Table Prince and his Royal Subjects Prince and the Empirorers Prince and the Dominion Prince and the New Republic --- or --- Prince and the Paupers Prince and the Monarchs Prince and the Pirates Awww i suck at this, but you get the idea... Honestly, I think the only reason Prince has kept the name of his band as the New Power Generation is strictly for marketing/promotional/commercial reasons. Think about it, he has the NPG record label, the NPG music club, and of course he has the NPG band.
Of course the name "Prince" will always be a household name, but I think that now that Prince is essentially on his own and divorced from the major record companies, any and all things "NPG" breeds a sense of familiarity... sort of like establishing a brand name product. This is exactly how I feel about it as well. If he wasn't going to continue the Lovesexy theme with "New Power Generation" than he should've dropped the name until he was ready to come back to that theme. I'll give him Graffiti Bridge and Rainbow Children, but certainly not New Power Soul, Gold Nigga, or Exodus.

With my luck, he'll change the band's name to The Salvation and make us all pray at the Celebration. [This message was edited Wed Jan 29 15:00:34 PST 2003 by XNY] "Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion" -- Martha Graham
