I love these unseen pictures, thanks for sharing with us. In the first one he looks like an office clerk with flat shoes, boring so glad he wore them high heels and great outfits.

Where was it taken at? They played theaters, then arenas on that tour. I also wonder if there was video. People were using the cameras for sporting events and letting them run during concerts, smuggling videotapes out. I'm pretty sure all the traders have all the early Prince footage that exists, not sure what Warners has in their vaults other than the promos, or if he videotaped rehearsals in the late 70s.
It's possible someone has some 8mm footage of the really early shows, but if they scoured the public access archives from 76-79, there's bound to be something with Prince on it, or even a local news item. I'm sure interns in that area already tried to unearth something.

Ooohhh never saw those before. Thanks so much for the up! Now that's some early New Wave attire, too ealry for the punk look to brush upon it then. But otherwise, cool pics man Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

Where were these taken? What city, specifically?

nice pictures. As much as I like Mr.Nelson, I prefer him clothed, those phases were he nearly exposes himself made me a bit uncomfortable.

Great pictures of both Prince and Rick. I would have given anything to have seen that tour with my two favorite artists on it. Andy is a four letter word.

Ok, this is all I could get from the person that shot these.
These were taken in Savannah, GA, in the summer of 1980. I don't have exact dates of the Rick James/Prince Tour.
This could may be the first (or one of the first few concerts) where he introduced the iconic Hohner Tele.
Several songs were performed (introduced) from Dirty Mind, including "When You Were Mine." Dirty Mind was released in October 1980. According to "Prince" (Per Nilsen), Dirty Mind was recorded over the summer in 1980 while on tour. This explains the "New Wave" look in the pic. Prince didn't start the "Dirty Mind" tour till late November 1980.
Damn! He never rested!!! [Edited 10/16/10 20:03pm]

Yeah, and the tickets were probably $6 a piece to see both acts!

I just wonder what song he was singing there, anyway this is awesome. The Drumkit definitely suggests Prince period before Dirty Mind, but probably sometime in 1980. As his hair is a transistion between the coiffure and the punk cut. So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

The gig in Savannah GA was on 10th April 1980, while supporting Rick James. Dirty Mind tour began 4th December 1980 in Buffalo.

Thanks, that makes more sense. After thinking about it, I get the suit. Prince was performing in GA...the deep south. Had he come out half naked in front of an audience that came to see Rick, God knows how hostile they may have reacted. That may have been ok in NY or LA. I'm sure he dressed according to the city and state. Very smart.
At this point, it was about work and continuing to build his black audience. I remember Dez saying, after the (1999) videos aired on MTV in 1983, 50% of his audience were white.
That guitar looks brand new! [Edited 10/17/10 6:37am]

Thanks for the info Bulldog. It would be interesting to hear the details of the concert and ask questions. Maybe they'd consider posting a thread about it sometime? Just a thought...

I wonder if these were taken with a 110 camera. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
