An interesting era, sorta connected with Lovesexy, good number of songs most likely recorded during that time period. the feel of the Line & the Future seems like they were recorded back 2 back. I like the time...

chapter 11 Fantastic p 156 At first, though, it seemed Prince had made a shrewd decision by tapping a Hollywood insider as his manager. Shortly after assuming his new job, Magnoli was contracted by the acclaimed director Tim Burton, who was shooting the movie Batman with Jack Nicholson in the role of the Joker. While assembling a rough cut, Nicholson and Burton placed two Prince songs -1999 & Baby, I'm A Star- into scenes as background music. Pleased wih the effect, they hatched the idea of asking Prince for new material to add to the film's soundtrack.

Prince flew with Magnoli to the movie's production site in London in January 1989 and was mesmerized by Burton's elaborate and haunting vision of Gotham City, Burton requested just two songs, since the composer Danny Elfman had been hired for the soundtrack. But Prince, suddenly inspired about the project, offered an entire album. Warner Bros. Pictures, emboldened by wild audience response to early trailers for Batman, decided that the film could sustain two soundtrack records-one a traditional score by Elfman and the other a collection of Prince songs.
-Possessed

Immediately after wrapping up the Lovesexy tour, Prince returned to Paisley Park adn set to work on Batman. Becoming fascinated with the characters(and especially the Joker), he sampled portions of the dialogue and synced his songs directly to scenes. Prince seemed convinced that his contributions would permeate the entire film. "This is going to be my movie!" he exclaimed to studio engineer Femi Jiya.

Prince created the whole album virtually on his own, a rare exception being a visit from Sheena Easton, who dueted on the ballad "The Arms of Orion." But for the most part, his labors were marked more by haste than by inspiration; on many of the songs, he quickly programmed drumbeats and then layered instruments with little attention to structure or melody. Some previously recorded numbers were revamped to fit the movie, such as "Anna Waiting" (about Anna Garcia), which morphed into Vicki Waiting after the character Vicki Vale. -Possessed

Released November 28, 1989

Scandalous
Come closer
Feel what U been dyin' 4
Don't be afraid, baby
Touch it and explode
Understand, understand that I love U
Ah, but more than that - I want U
Everybody always told me good things come 2 those who wait
But I've got so much on the menu
I just can't, I just can't, I can't wait, baby
I can't wait, baby
Till I can wrap my legs all around U girl
Cuz sugar, U know U're just the kind of lover
That I've been lookin' 4
2night why don't we skip all the foreplay, mama
And just get down here on the floor

CHORUS:
Scandalous - I'm talkin' 'bout U and me
Marvelous - baby, baby, can't U see?
Anything U ever dreamed of, I'm willing 2 be
2night is gonna be scandalous
Cuz 2night I'm gonna be your fantasy

(Dear, my, my)
My dearest, my dearest

Oh girl, the things U make me do
Genius is the only way 2 describe U

Anything U ever dreamed of, baby
Just ask me - I'll do, I'll do, I'll do it 4 U, baby
Anything at all
Spirits rise and spirits fall
Anything U ever dreamed of, I'm willing 2 be
2night is gonna be scandalous

Scandalous!" is a smooth, romantic ballad by Prince, released as a single from his 1989 album, the soundtrack to Batman. The song continues a long tradition of Prince's sexually charged ballads, with gasped, passionate vocals on lyrics such as "I can't wait till I can wrap my legs all around U." The track features a drum machine and synthesizers, which sample Clare Fischer's orchestra. The music is attributed to Prince and his father, John L. Nelson.

The Scandalous Sex Suite, released three days later, transforms the song into a three-part suite. "The Crime" is a seductive conversation between Prince and Kim Basinger with various lyrics from the song interspersed. "The Passion" features the main song with new lyrics sung over the original lyrics. "The Rapture" includes a long guitar solo before finishing up the conversation from part one.

The B-side, "Sex", is a minimalist funk number featuring mainly a drum machine loop, a repeated synth hook, and bass guitar. The song lyrics state that safe sex is preferable, and sex with multiple partners can lead to death. The song was co-written with bassist Levi Seacer, Jr. The 7" single received the Lovesexy song, "When 2 R In Love" as its B-side; the song was also included on The Scandalous Sex Suite.

"Scandalous!" replaced "Still Would Stand All Time" as Batman's main ballad and love theme. The discarded song would later end up on Graffiti Bridge. Composer Danny Elfman adapted parts of "Scandalous!" into his Batman film score, where it served as a love theme.

"Scandalous!" reached No. 5 on the U.S Black Singles chart, but didn't touch the US Hot 100.

"Scandalous!" was Prince's final single released in the 1980s.

Due to licensing issues with the Batman franchise, Prince was not allowed to include songs from this album on any compilations. Even on concert T-shirts listing Prince's albums, the Batman title was replaced by the song "Scandalous!".

Seems to me that this is an example of his first misstep in compiling an album. His creative judgment on this album seems questionable at best. I think that the whole era displays a complete lack of real creativity. His image, the music, the lack of touring, the simple production of the period. It was really evident during this time that he was transitioning away from something towards something new. The performance of "Electric Chair" on SNL was especially transformative. The oft-ignored band lineup blended the past, present, and future of Prince's band at its most diverse.

Possessed: the Rise & Fall of Prince p 157 Chapter 11 Fantastic

Only rarely did any genuine experimentation occur during the sessions. Batdance, slated as the first single, was an intriguing collage of samples, jarringly different musical sections, and searing guitar work. The project's other major compositional effort was "Dance With the Devil", an eerie-sounding piece with Prince singing a descending minor-key melody over a drum-machine pattern. Unfortunately, he shelved the song and it remains unreleased.

Batman arrived in theaters in mid-June 1989 and quickly became one of of themost successful movies of all time, grossing $0 million on its opening weekend and eventually taking in $250 million at the box office. The marketing division of Warner Bros. Pictures deftly exploited the film's simple poster image - a black bat against a gold background - for tie-ins of products ranging from toys to cereals. Prince's soundtrack, released at the same time as the movie, benefitted significantly from this hype and became his biggest hit in years, selling 4.4 million copies worldwide and reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Pop Chart. Although hardly a Purple Rain scale success, the album reconfirmed his status as a major star.

Critical response to the album, however, was mixed. "It's hard to avoid the suspicion that some of the songs on Batman were already sitting around Paisley Park as part of Prince's vast outpouring of music," wrote John Parales in Rolling Stone. David Sinclair of the London Times observed that "there is a distinctly throwaway quality to much of this material."

I agree, it got him some money in his pocket, but another 'rushed' album.

My favorite is the Future, similar feel to the Line

But overall, even those who say Lovesexy was rushed etc etc, Batman really does have that feel.

I didn't expect any touring for this album because he was gearing for Graffiti Bridge

Dr Fink & Mico being the last of the Purple Reign it was changing too much for me and I think the change had serious affects on his career too

OldFriends..... regarding your original post.

R U Legal Yet? is actually titled 18(R U Legal Yet?) and was recorded as part of the sessions for the proposed Madhouse 24 album, between December 5th '88 and December 15th '88.

3 Batman tracks were recorded during 1988, Electric Chair, Scandalous and Vicki Waiting. The rest of the albums tracks were recorded during 1989.

Hope this helps.

Interestingly, a track titled "Batman Theme" was considered for an early configuration of the Batman album, and the track was in fact a re-worked version of the Madhouse 24 track "19(Jailbait).

Thanks 18 sounds so much like music from the Batman sessions to me

It was definately an interesting 'era' not as colorful as say ATWIAD which to me was like an intermediate album (no planned tour or straight on promo of the album) Batman had more promo mainly because of the Batman movie connection:3-4 videos SNL performance etc ATWIAD had 1 'official' video the other was a live rendition of a mini concert both preceeded a movie

I've always liked this one

OUTTAKE: Dance With the Devil

Dance With The Devil
Intended for Batman, this dark eerie track utilizes a drum machine, piano, synth, and the voice of The Joker. The song is based on the scene where The Joker holds Vicki Vale hostage in Gotham's bell tower. Prince warns to be cautious of the devil's tricks. Some lyrics can be seen in the liner notes of the soundtrack.

Cunning liar, eternal fire
Demon clever, promise 4ever
The curious try and always die

Live in fear, the devil is near
Can U feel his breath? Pray 4 death
The curious try and always die

"U men point those search lights up on the tower right now - move, move!"

Have no Savior, have no faith
Never look 4 Heaven's gate
Devil's children, no love inside
There is a soul, but it has died

Devil's children, no love inside
There is a soul, but it has died
And it cries, and it cries.

CHORUS:
Dance with the devil in the pale moonlight
Put your arms around him and hold him tight
Give up 2 the feeling and don't try 2 fight
He wants your soul and he wants it 2night
Dance with the devil in the pale moonlight
Put your arms around him and hold him tight
Close your eyes 2 love and die

Dance with the devil in the pale moonlight {sampled till end}

"U know, without U I just wouldn't wanna go on"

CHORUS {x2}

Dance with the devil in the pale moonlight
Put your arms around him and hold him tight

"It's as though we were made 4 each other
Beauty and the Beast
Of course if anyone else calls U 'Beast'
I'll rip their lungs out"

Dance with the devil in the pale moonlight
Put your arms around him and hold him tight

My thoughts were that the Batman album was quite a departure from what we had before. Lovesexy was very much a "group" sound in my opinion, then came Batman which was cold and very electronic sounding.

I like the Batman album, i think the music fitted the vibe of the movie really well. The movie has that dark futuristic feel to it and i think that Prince managed quite well to obtain the same kind of feeling with the music.

I love the videos from this period, and the remixes that were released were fantastic.

The (Japanese) Scandalous Sex Suite e.p has some great music on there, including one of my favourite b-sides "Sex," which could have very easily been a Batman album track.

Like an idiot i sold my Batcan years ago, i can't recall the art being any different, pretty sure it was the same as the standard cd, though the booklet was round obviously.

The art for the symbol cd gold box IS the same as the standard cd, i have both.

What about the actual cd itself? The one I have of the prince cd is a color pic of Prince and the NPG. The Batman cd I have is just black and grey with the bat symbol on it.

The standard Batman cd is silver with a small yellow and black Batman logo and the tracklist running down one side of the cd.

The standard Symbol cd i have is the colour picture of the band, the gold box cd i have is a purple disc with what looks like a hand drawn symbol all the way round the disc in gold.

I'm sure this was mentioned in a thread a while back about the symbol cd, it seems different continents got different cd designs.

The Batcan is a nice item though, as is the gold box, keep hold of them. The batcan is a lot rarer than the gold box though, not sure how many Batcans were produced, but it is a lot harder to find than the Symbol gold box.

My 2nd favorite Prince album and the first music I ever heard from him. The first time I heard of him was in the Batman movie (been a biiig batman fan since a kid), during the scene where partyman is played as joker wreaks the resturant to meet Viki Vale, and Trust (probably my 2nd fav Prince song) played during the parade scene in the movie.

Then I found out he was the one who made the song, I forgot where. But when I started listening to michael jackson seriously about 3 months before he died is when I first started listening to Prince. And I never really did like him till I got the Love Symbol album and listened to 3 chains O gold. Then I relized Prince is much much more than vocals, and thats when I started paying attention to his guitar skills and instrument playing arrengments and became a big fan.

Edit: And its my favorite look in terms of appearence! Long hair + beard = fucking cool.

I bought the prince cd on the day of release in the US and it is purple with the hand-drawn symbols on it, just as it is in the Gold Box I have.

Also, it was my understanding that the BatCan wasn't rare at all as WB mass produced them. I had friends finding them in stores and buying them for me, thinking they were special, as late as the mid-90's. I think I have 4 or 5 of them tucked away. lol Is an un-opened BatCan worth anything? wink

Hahaha, They were mass produced, but so were the Symbol gold boxes, as were other "special/limited editions," i guess the term "limited edition" does not mean too much when tens of thousands of copies are pressed. The official Black Album is a good example of this.

However, you are lucky to have a few Batcans. I regularly scan ebay (uk & usa) for Prince rarities, and it is not an often seen item compared to other easier found collectables. Maybe the Batcan owners are holding on to them, unlike me, who was foolish to sell...hahaha.

No idea how much it is worth, i have never seen an unopened one for sale before. I have seen them range from £20 ($20)- £30.

I'm sure if you sold one on the org it would get snapped up quick.

Perfectly fine funk/rock album. The Arms of Orion is awful though, but still better than many of his 96-99 and 07-10 ballads... Lemon Crush is also filler but still a superior jam... The album would have worked (critically) much better as a normal Prince release, like a return to basics after the experimentation of ATWIAD, Parade, SOTT, Lovesexy, etc. But critics and hardcore fans dismissed it as a "hollow soundtrack", ... the mainstream audiences were smarter lol nod : as I've said, it's a perfectly fine/enjoyable funk/rock album for the late-80s...

Monogamy and trust is what I'm talkin' 'bout
I'll give up all my lovers if U can make me shout
Oh, S is 4 scandalous
E is 4 exciting
X is 4 adults-only
Let's do something frightening

Sex, sex
Can't stop the feelin' baby, nobody should
Sex, sex
Anything this dangerous has 2 be good

Now I'm the type of alien
Who knows just what he wants
But U're the type who plays in the trees
U got it maybe that's why U flaunt
Oh, I'll climb a thousand trees if I have 2
But baby I'm warning U
One of us is gonna end up on our knees

Sex, sex
Just can't stop the feeling baby, nobody should
Sex, sex
Anything this dangerous has 2 be good, good, good

Just has 2 be
Sex, sex

(Get up) On the chair baby
Let me dance under your skirt
(Get up) (Everybody on the dance floor now)
C'mon now
(Get up) Get up on the table now
Let me show U how 2 flirt
(Get up) (Ooh feels good, ooh feels good)
Ahh, ooh
I like it baby, when U let me touch U there
I like it girl, I knew U weren't wearin' any underwear (Get up)
Baby, is it wrong that I want U so?
I want U baby
I want U now
S. E. X.

Sex, sex
Can't stop the feeling baby, nobody should
Sex, sex
Anything this dangerous has 2 be good, good, good
Just has 2 be good

Fellas, all the boys that know about the good thing say, "Yeah yeah!"
And all the girls with no underwear on say, "Yes!" (Yes)
We gettin' funky 2night
Sex
Yo! Peep this out
Fellas, I want everybody saying it on the one, come on
S.E.X.
Say it (S.E.X.)
Come on, say S.E.X, say it (S.E.X.)
Keep that going fellas, come on (S.E.X.)
Yeah (S.E.X.)

One lover - sex

Bsides & albm & era Outtakes

Batdance
The track from Batman is an edit of this outtake. The middle section is basically the same, but the 2 sections based on "200 Balloons" are extended. This version contains some samples from "House In Order", which was later given to Mavis Staples, and "Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic", which was supposed to be in the film but was replaced by "Partyman" after being rejected. "Batdance" replaced "Dance With The Devil", which Prince thought was too dark.

Bliss
This is Prince's version of the song he gave to Japanese artist Kahoru Kohiruimaki from a studio session on September 3, 1989 (could be the date of the final mix). Kohiruimaki just substituted some of Prince's vocals for her own. Prince and an engineer can be heard talking before the track. It was collaborated with Levi Seacer, Jr.

Feel U Up
This outtake was recorded toward the end of 1981 and was taped in sequence with "Irresistible Bitch". Both songs were later re-recorded. The lyrics are very similar to to the released song although the vocals seem to have been recorded at a low level. "Feel U Up" was re-recorded in 1986 for the shelved Camille album and finally released in 1989 as the B-side to "Partyman".

Flesh And Blood
This track was newly written in 1989 for a Jill Jones project. The lyrics concern "revolutionary" love and even mention Napoleon and Josephine. Jill will do what's necessary in the relationship despite being "only flesh and blood." The music is fast and energetic and Prince's voice can clearly be heard in the chorus.

Mindbells
This is Prince's version given to Japanese artist Kahoru Kohiruimaki for her 1989 Time The Motion album. She simply substituted his vocals for her own. The song has a production date of September 3rd, 1989, which probably refers to the final mix date.

My Baby Knows How To Love Me
This bouncy uptempo pop tune was pulled out of the vault to use on the 1989 Jill Jones project. Originally recorded in 1982, it sounds similar to some of the Vanity 6 material written around that time frame; however, the 1989 take contains some sampling of the chorus and other "modern" updates. The lyrics relate that Jill would never stray from a lover that knows how to treat her.

Power From Above
Originally planned to be the opening track of Carmen Electra's album, "Power From Above" is a powerful uptempo dance cut introduced by synths that recall Bruce Springstein's "Born In The USA". The chorus of "Hey, we got the power, oh, we got the soul" was originally from the outtake "We Got The Power" and later used in "Batdance". Prince also makes appearances as several humorous characters throughout the song.

The Voice Inside
Written after Lovesexy in the summer of 1988, "The Voice Inside" was intended to be a track on the 1988 LP, Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic. The album was abandoned when Prince got involved with the Batman project and this track is one of the two from the album that remains unreleased. The song is an uplifting number urging everyone to listen to the voice of positivity when we feel the urge to succumb to negative vices. Musically, the song is uptempo and features a number of playful sound effects, similar to some of the Lovesexy material. It segues into "Melody Cool", which later was released on Graffiti Bridge, along with several other tracks from Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic.
