I was walking through a grocery store yesterday and "Manic Monday" came over the sound system. I got to wondering about the royalties Prince currently receives from the songs he's recorded, as well as those written for other artists. Are there any estimates on what his back catalog nets him these days? Do you think that without further recording, writing, or performing, that these could support him financially, or is that oversetimating those royalties?

I guess the question I'm ultimately asking is, given Prince's current financial situation (unknown to me), do you think Prince NEEDS to create product and tour to survive, or is it all about "the love", or a bit of both?

i've heard a lot of people say prince is desperate more money.

but i can honestly see no evidence for this.
the dance contests on stage for example, people won hundreds of pounds.

and i no prince needs 10 times that sort of amounts etc to survive, with his lifestyle, but there is just noevidence that he is poor .

So my answer is : i think he can make money through touring, but if he really needed money, he would just release the vault etc. live recording through the net.

This is far from fact but in 1998 MTV said that Prince made around $5 million from his back catalog, but he didn't see much of it because he still owed Warner Brothers money from previous loans and advances.


I would say that Prince is probably making less then the $5 million now but still probably a substancial amount.

I don't think this would be enough money for him being as he owns at least 6 houses, two mansions, and Paisley Park and they all cost money to operate.

I remember reading in an interview that it was $8 to $9 million when it was administered by Warner Chappell, to which he paid administrate fees for handling publishing and licenses. I am not aware of any outstandning debt he had to Warners... I always thought that both sides called it even when they parted ways.

It is my understanding that he negotiated a better deal for himself (in terms of administration fees) when he signed with Universal to administer his publishing and licensing fees in 2000.

He has made cut backs like all Artists at one time or another but The Cat got enough Catelog,&Touring Loot to be Set for a Good While.I'm Sure He has Good Lawyers handling His Loot pretty Good?going by what Prince has said:He really started making Money off His Albums from "Emanciapation" through Now.

Of course he has to tour and make albums and all and keep the $$$ coming in,but I don't think he's in Financial Straits of any Kind if that's what you are asking and you know for Performers and Artists they Crave and Need the Love from their Fans so Yes he needs that Outpouring of Love from the Fans. Why would he wanna Play if nobody dug him Anymore or Got Excited as all Hell over the Music? I think Then he would Indeed Cease to care.

may i ask why for years people have been so concerned about prince's pocket?? obviously he dont care whats in your's so why worry bout his... just my :2cents:

I think Prince cares plenty about the money in the fans pockets. It depends on if he invest his money well, as to how much he has.A lot of these so called 'rich people file bankruptcy. I have a feeling Prince would be smart about his money.
