If Prince's career started today would he become as big of a star? What would his place be in the music industry? Would he even be signed to a major record label?
Given the increasingly tight wallets of record labels and the decreased willingness to takes risks, the fragmentation of the music industry, the corporatization of radio, and all of the consequences of the internet (less albums, more single tracks sold; artists producing and distributing themselves; an impatient public that always looking for the next thing), and even the general cultrual mood, what do you think Prince's career trajectory would look like if he started with "For You" in 2010?
Would the raw talent catapult him to superstar status regardless of the changed industry conditions? Or, would he be a (as many artists are) a mega-talent with an extremely loyal, but not huge following, or would he be something in between. It's easy to see him as an independent-from-day-one underground sensation, but what other outcomes would be possible?

If 20TEN were his first album, he'd be lauded for his versatility, but lambasted for his religious obsession. He would not be a huge seller, but he'd probably get respect.

18-year-old Prince would be a star today. He'd have taken whatever he listened to growing up in the 90's and 00's and made it infinitely better (which really wouldn't be much of a challenge).
52-year-old Prince, if he was just coming onto the scene, would not be a star because, well...he's 52.
