Yes, it's clearly that killer funk groove that I can't stand. That must be it.

I like the whole 20ten album except compassion and everybody loves me so this is good news. Cause and effect cant be on this deluxe album. I pray 2 god that prince dont let that shit make it 2 the album. But.. the devine? Welcome 2 The Dawn

after all the begging and screaming for deluxe editions of his albums he decides to release a deluxe edition of this one
wake me when the "parade" deluxe edition is released. or "gold" deluxe, featuring stuff like 'strength', 'what it is', 'realize' and 'angie'.
until then

This reminds me of my thoughts that when the remasters of his catalogue begin that they will do a superduper For You first lol.
(even though it will most likely be his first three at one time).

Where did he say he doesn't like funk? Prince used to be funky AND write good songs. I like a lot of his recent stuff (including most of 20TEN), but this track sounds pretty terrible, even if his vocal is great.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
well sure, i guess some people do live off prince's bank account, but i still dont think his music has ever been 'crap'.
i think its just another word for 'i dont like it' but each to their own i guess.
and no offence to you personally but it makes me feel really uncomfortable when people trivialize the work of a musical legend to 'crap' just because it doesnt have the same zing it used to.
as a musician he deserves respect whether we like his music or not, but thats just my opinion.
i kinda feel for him being locked away in his bubble like he is, with no real frame of realistic reference on anything much, its bound to have done a trip on his mind over the years.
if that is somehow showing through in his music then that's something he can either acknowledge or ignore i guess, but as long as there are people buying his records and going to concerts he might not really care what critics think.
he's had a great life and a successful career for 30 years. whatever he does at this point cant really take away from that, except if he became a mass murderer or something.
anyway, i'm looking forward to hearing the whole song. its a bit hard to know what to say about it otherwise. this too shall pass

^ ^ So far, the few lines that I've heard to "Rich Friends", seems to target people who search for happiness, love and security through money, by seeking rich people ($$ Ch-ching!) as their welfare checks, while not making any real effort to work and make money on their own.

you mean like free-loaders? this too shall pass

Pretty much. Then again he could be singing about rich people who look for happiness and love with their money or "rich friends" meaning, good friends that you trust and have your back, in which you don't need wealth (or need to be rich monetarily) to have friends like that. Who knows? Guess we'll have to wait for the full version of the song to see which one of those he's referring to.

well yeah, thats why i said i'm waiting on the full version before i can have an 'opinion' on it musically or lyrically. this too shall pass

Neat. More forum spam. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Yep, I felt the same way. Didn't even want to listen to it again. Meh, oh well. "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." - Bruce Lee

He loses respect with every new release.
It is over, but no-one dares to tell him. And if he himself thinks he's still writing good music... well, that is just the saddest thing imagineable.

I think when he says "who needs $ when u have rich friends" is him saying who cares about $ when u have friends that r rich in character.

Because it's not official. The only proof we have of a new album is of a couple of people who can speak French.

This is my opinion as well, I totally agree with you. Musical tastes are so different, and just because I might not like some songs doesn't mean that I think they are crap!

I've had funkier farts than this.

what i'm suggesting is that the quality of his over-all output during his career is enough for me to respect him as a musician whether i like his music these days or not.
i cant ignore a whole back catalog of really great music and write it off just because he releases something that i may not get in to.
even if he released something i really, really didnt like, he is still bringing with him 30 years of experience and musicianship into that recording.
could never bring myself to use the word 'crap' in relation to his music, even if i thought it was, because for me there is still a level of respect that goes from me to him in acknowledgment of all he has done.
i hear you loud n clear when you say it's over and no one dares to tell him. i know exactly what you mean, but i'm not in a position to make that judgment call.
he has done this for 30 years, music has been his life and the most part of his identity since he first fell in love with it.
its not something he can toss to one side and give up on just like that. its routine for him in a way that none of us knows.
music is the primary way he expresses himself and i dont think it would be right for him to stop doing that just because his current output is not as wow as his previous output.
he has people around him all the time, fuelling the prince machine, everything from ego boosts, laughing at his jokes when they aren't funny,
telling him how great and cool and smooth he looks, and how his music is just so great its like wow its fantastic 'our jaws were on the floor' etc...
i feel for him that he may not be able to discern between comments from people that are pure hype and those coming from a more genuine place.
he is a combination of incredibly naive, and egomaniacal, so you can imagine how he interprets input from others.
either way the upshot for me is that it isnt appropriate, nor kind, nor respectful to toss him out as a musician, like a used up toy, or a broken machine,
just because we might not be as stimulated by his newer releases compared to his earlier output.
he is a person, not a product with a use-by date, so just let him be the prince he wants to be and enjoy his life the way he wants to.
its probably all he asks for, as well as being paid fairly, which he deserves to be if that is where his focus is.
our opinions are only opinions, they wont change anything for better or worse in the long run, so my take on it is to enjoy the music i enjoy and leave the rest alone without slamming him for it. this too shall pass

I think it's interesting to hear people saying that people use Prince for his money, that he is the "Rich Friend" in question.
The opposite is true, actually. Prince has used his star-power to surround himself with "rich friends" which no doubt have had a hand in bringing attention to him again (even if it's not for the music).
Over the last 5 years or so, he's made it a point to throw/attend celebrity afterparties with A-list actors and models . . . when a few years prior he couldn't be bothered with other celebrities. He finally networked and it paid off for him.

bloody hard to juge it on a 20 sec clip but I love his voal on this.

I'm sure he has friends that don't whine and complain about him and his music and still continue to play Gods on a Prince forum. My newborn doesn't cry as much as some of his "fans". LOL

You get over yourself. You value people's opinions, right? I am of the opinion that people like you whine and cry like little babies. You don't have to act like a puke on here. There, that's my opinion so you can wrap it up in a cardboard cd holder.

Whoa. From the look of your fart emoticon, I'll take your word for it that you have funky farts. But, when a solid leaves your body during a flatulent moment, it surpasses "funky" and goes straight to "uncalled for". I wonder why Prince wants 2 release a deluxe edition of 20ten. It would have been better if he had released the complete 20ten album from the begining and moved on. Welcome 2 The Dawn
