What's "LayDown" about?

I've lost a little bit interest in Prince lately, so I found out about his 20ten album just 1 month ago, probably missed all fuzz about it. Now I've been listening this album over and over with mixed feelings about it. Some songs are not my piece of cake, other are pretty well, a few are great. I really enjoy "Everybody loves me", a catchy simple (?) song that makes me smile.

But, like probably 99% of the listeners, the best song on the album is 77 - Laydown

As English is not my native language, the first few times I didn't pay too much attention to the lyrics. (That's a great thing when English isn't your native.... you can pay attention to the music allone if you wish smile ) But for the last 2 days suddenly the lyrics worked on me, and made me very curious;

Probably a stupid question;

WHAT'S THIS SONG ABOUT????

To me it sounds like a Billy Jack Bitch song....

Is it a bash to some other musical artist who thinks (s)he's as good as Prince?

Is it a rage against recent music in common?

(Or is it something biblical, which I don't see because I've never read it)

==========

You need to laydown
And let me show you how
We do this thing
Up in funky town

From the heart of Minnesota
Here come the purple Yoda
Guaranteed to bring the dirty new sound
Come on, now

You need to shut it up
Your cup ain't full enough
Let me show you what I learned
From laying in the cut

You need a six string
And let that sucker ring
The holy funking roll
Let it get the people up

To say this name borders on blasphemy
Everybody wanna be me
If your girlfriend didn't have the surgery
Maybe she could see what I see

Yours ain't really the grove we dance to
We need something more funky to move to
Y'all know what I'm talkin' 'bout
That purple bounce, bounce

Rio de Janeiro
Euro and [Incomprehensible]
This dirty little groove for you
Let's do it now, come on, boo

Bounce, bounce
Come on, now, come on, now

I think it is just a nice little "brag and boast" song, lyrically not too far away from songs such as "My Name Is Prince", " Daddy Pop", and "The Exodus Has Begun".

It´s interesting that you like the song "Everybody Loves Me ", of all songs. I can´t stand that song but I love Walk In The Sand, Future Soul Song, Laydown and actually anything EXCEPT for "Everybody Loves Me" and "Compassion". Those songs leave me cold, but hey, we all have different tastes.It just goes to show you how difficult it must be for Prince to choose the "right" songs for an album since we all like totally different songs....which was, aside from the production, one of the main flaws of the Emancipation album...everybody had a different "favorite" tracklist. wink

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Isn't that the one where he desperately tries to imitate the Black Eyed Peas' sound?

Laydown is really growing on me. It's not actually my favorite, actually Everybody Loves Me and Sticky Like Glue are my favorites. The only song I really can't get into is Sea Of Everything.

Yep, to most people, this is a once cutting edge musician trying to tap into the current 'sound', which isn't that current anymore.

Not his worst track, but wisely placed as a (not so) hidden track.

You guys - both of you - are out of your fuckin minds. If you really think there's BEP or Missy in Laydown get some stronger drugs. All that soft cannabis shit seems to be wreckin your brains.

Just more dick-waving from Prince. Another song about how he's the 'baddest.' More enjoyable than some of his others, though.

Actually, it's considered one of his funkiest tracks of the last years, no matter where you ask, east to west, up and down. Only place i've seen the track bashed is the freakshow called the org. If it wasn't so sad, it would be incredibly ridiculous... confused

It's considered that by whom? Where? When? What? You can't even back up that claim. And you say this, I presume, in reply to the posts above you about not understanding why people on the org seem to praise this crap song?

I can actually envision P rushing home or to the nearest studio and writing this track after returning from a club where he witnessed some less than stellar "hyped" performer trying to move the crowd. Basically, it's a boast track.
