It's a very strange and ancient technique called 'PLAYING THE GUITAR'.

Prince himself has defined it as a cross between Neo-classic Folk and Hungarian Unibrow Death Metal. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I don't think they play alike at all. I heard Prince for years before I ever hear him play anything that sounded like Carlos Santana.
Although if he wants to, Prince certainly can play it like Carlos when he chooses

Yes Prince have his style on guitar. Like in the every other aspect of Prince he took what he liked the best from Hendrix ,Santana,George Benson, Tony Maiden ,Jimmy Nolen ,Ike Turner and blended it into a perfect mix. When you hear Prince's guitar solo or rhythm guitar lick you instantly know it's Prince/

Prince has his own style, yes, although I must say you certainly can hear his influences clearly.
I'd say in his solos he's most influenced by Santana, especially later in Prince's career. Earlier in his career I hear more of a Hendrix influence in his solos. In Prince's rhythm guitar I hear a lot of Tony Maiden and Jimmy Nolen.
I prefer Prince as a rhythm guitar player, he's got immaculate timing and groove. He is very recognisable in his rhythm guitar playing, more so than in his solos. In fact I find him amazing as a rhythm guitar player, he is amongst my all time favorites. Therefore I enjoy 20Ten a lot, because I think there is lots of excellent rhythm guitar in there!
I do often enjoy Prince's solos as well, but IMO nobody can come even close to the excitement that Jimi brought in his solos.
(BTW, i found it funny that you mention Tony Maiden. I hadn't even been aware of his influence on Prince until I heard "Sweet Thing" for the first time about 5 years ago. I had immediately noticed the striking resemblence to Prince's rhythm guitar playing back then, but didn't know who played the guitar on that track. So I went to look it up on Google just now, as I wanted to mention him in my reply to your post, only to find out that you had included him in your list as well! )
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Oh, my gawd - that's our former governor. I know him! We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

When you say Santana are you just saying that he hits a note and sustains it for a few depressing minutes before hitting another little flurry?
Yes he does have similarities with Carlos but, thank fuck, he doesn't always play like it.
Basically he plays funk and rock. Think pentatonic.

Pentatonic is a Scale, not a style, And he has played other stuff, he played some mixolydian blues etc...

Not a scale? Gosh, really
Mixolydian run on The Ladder isn't there? May be wrong but I'm sure it's on that album somewhere. Sounds nice anyway. And it's more of a mode than a scale isn't it

The westernized concept of modes I always thought was stupid. They're all essentially scales. Now get to Raga and Gamelan music, those are modes.
but if you want to get cute, sure they're modes

Friend again?
It's not on The Ladder but it's pissing me off as I can hear the run but can't put it to a song!!! Hate it when that happens. [Edited 10/14/10 2:31am]
