I often overhear people saying "This is what it sounds like...when I take a dump". Note to self: Gotta stop taping my co-workers while they're on the shit can. Really though, how can watching someone take a shit get a guy all roused up anyway? I don't care if you saw her cootchie. She's takin a shit for God's sake!

Personally, from time to time I've said "Now move that big ass 'round this way so I can work on that zipper baby." to a certain someone.

This ain't a quote, but there's the whole waving one's arms slowly back and forth during a ballad thing. A lot of people probably don't know that's from Purple Rain...

Are you kidding me?

Did your world begin the day you first heard Prince or something?

My IDEAS?

The original post essentially asked for phrases that originated with Prince that have worked their way into mainstream language to the point that the Prince connection is irrelevant.

I don't think he's originated ANY outside of partial credit for "Party like it's 1999" and even that is itself a reference to the age old phrase "Party like there's no tomorrow"...

Now let's look at yours:

Videophone-beyonce(Prince said videophone in the song "Now")

million dollar girl tempo(early '80s prince tempo.)

Automatic-Tokio Hotel(Automatic-Prince)

Peaches and Cream-112(Prince made two songs called "Peach" and another called "Cream"

The thread isn't simply asking for words the Prince has used at some point that other people have also used. How are any of these examples of phrases originated by Prince (in other words, phrases not commonly uttered prior to his usage of them) that have now become part of the popular lingo? Prince didn't invent the word "Videophone" - it's the name of a communications device. The words "automatic", "peach" and "cream" were certainly under common usage, etc...

Yeah you're right. Any topic that's new or fun or different or challenging is nutty?

Only negative topics and the same old list topics are your version of good topics, huh?

Some people just have built-in negativity. nuts

This one is so much a part of the vernacular that I didn't realise at first that it was your contribution to Prince phrases - I thought you were just offering advice to those on the thread wink In any case, well played.

That said, I'm almost certain that was around long before Kiss, but he definitely made it more popular!

This is indeed a very old phrase and was part of popular language long before Kiss. Hell, I can remember it being popular in grade school. lol

'Act your age, not your shoe size'. Honestly i'm not sure if that phrase was coined by Prince, though i'd suspect not.

i'd never heard that phrase before 'Kiss', heard it a lot since.

Prince started the shorthanded texting concept....even the haters can't deny that.

R U ready 2 C the Dawn?

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

"Haters"? falloff

Are you suggesting that no one abbreviated letters like that prior to him doing it and that people picked it up for the purposes of texting entirely because of him?

Prince invented the term, "slammin".

As in, that song or that beat is "slammin"!

maybe Prince was the first person you heard using the phrase Slammin, But he did NOT invent the phrase.... we were saying Slammin in my neighborhood in Brooklyn before Prince did in U Got The Look

Artist Formerly Known As is used in British journalism all the time. Just this week one of the British newspapers referred to P Diddy as the Artist Formerly Known As Puff Daddy.

Here's a link describing the development of the phrase; Germain Greer and Rene Russo in the 1990's. Amy Winehouse in 2003.
